Celtic doesn't make much sense either. With PSG, I can see the attraction of a shiny new toy for the Quatari sheik or whoever owns that club now, and Posh would be right at home in Paris. Glasgow seems like a nice place, but doesn't really fit into the pattern of London-Madrid-LA-Milan, and the SPL is on death's door.'Ramsay Hunt Experience said:I'm trying to remember my Football Manager, but I do think I get asked to re-register after the group stage. It's rarely an issue because even if I make a big January transfer, he's often cup tied.I don't get the PSG link at all. Marco Veratti might be their second best player this season. You generally don't bring in like for like reinforcements that are 17 years older than your starter. But global brand, blah blah blah.'NewlyRetired said:Two of the rumored teams Becks might sign with include Celtic and PSG.Would he be allowed to play in the knockout rounds of the UCL if it comes to pass?

UEFA has confirmed that Euro 2020 will take place across a number of cities on the continent rather than in a single country or two host nations.
The decision, to mark the 60th anniversary of the inaugural European Championship, was taken by UEFA's Executive Committee at a meeting in Lausanne on Thursday.
UEFA general secretary Gianni Infantino told a press conference after the meeting: "Some important decisions have been taken. UEFA Euro 2020 will be staged across the continent, in various major cities following a decision taken today.
"A Euro for Europe follows an initial idea by UEFA president Michel Platini. The response has been extremely positive from all the national associations.''
The format and number of cities that will be involved in the tournament will be decided by UEFA's National Team Competitions Committee. It is believed matches will be held in 12 or 13 different countries, with the final stages all taking place in one venue.
The Football Association has already put forward Wembley to UEFA as a possible venue for the final and semi-finals, and it is reported that Platini favours the FA's proposal.
The announcement will also give Wales, Scotland and the Republic of Ireland hope of hosting some of the matches as they too have already expressed their interest to UEFA.
Infantino confirmed that the bidding process for the host cities would start in March and would take a year with decisions made in the spring of 2014.
It will be the first time that the tournament has not been held by a single host or joint-host countries since its inception in 1960, however, UEFA insists it is a one-off.
Cool idea. Having multiple home sides in group stages will be a bit controversial. Or they can have zero home sides in group stages, but I think that would be counter productive. At least we can insure that the final is on neutral ground if they pick Wembley.Euro 2020 to be held across Europe

Looks like we were not the only ones who thought he sucked. Arena confirmed today that he would not be back with the side. I really hope Villareal can make the jump from Cup player to a regular league player next year for LA. I think he is one of the better young offensive talents the US has.3) I have seen Wilhelmsen play a bunch this year for LA since he joined the team and he never fit in. I think he played in every game for Sweden this summer in the Euro Championships so he has to have some sort of quality but maybe he is still finding he way in the new league and country which can be tough for some players no matter how good they are. That Wilhelmsen guy was a black hole every time he got the ball... which makes me think he'll end up in NY.
NY is moving allocation money around like it is candy, back and forth. My first reaction is that Philly likely used the allocation money they got in the original Le Toux trade to get him backLe Toux returns to Philly. We're gettin the band back together!!!Is it bad that my first reaction to this trade was, "Wow, season ticket sales must be really sluggish"?

USMNT Daily Update: Holden on the comeback trail, but patience remains keyPosted on December 6, 2012 by Ives Galarcep By IVES GALARCEPStuart Holden resumed full training with Bolton on Thursday, a major step in his return from a knee injury that has cost him most of the past year and a half. Despite the fact that he hasn’t worn a U.S. national team uniform in more than two years, U.S. fans still clamor for his return every time there is some hint of a chance he will begin playing again.Bolton manager Dougie Freedman was quick to try and calm expectations about just how close he is to returning to the field.“He is training with us on every second day. He is looking nice and fit and his sharpness will come,” Freedman said of Holden. “He is such an enthusiastic lad and he is great to have around. I have tried to encourage Stuart to get around the place which is good for us.“But we are still a couple months away from seeing Stuart, let’s not kid ourselves, but we are looking forward to that.”Holden’s path to recovery has been a long and frustrating one for him. He has been forced to watch from the sidelines as Bolton faced relegation and his former manager, Owen Coyle, lost his job. Holden has also been forced to watch as new faces emerged on the national team and his old coach, Bob Bradley, was replaced by Jurgen Klinsmann. So much has changed since Holden last played for the United States, and even for Bolton. He has to still recover full fitness, and test out his surgically-repaired knee. As Freedman pointed out, Holden is probably still some months from being a regular, and even then it would be premature to start talking about the national team.If you want to think about Holden and the national team, think about this summer, when the U.S. will have both qualifiers and the Gold Cup. Six months is plenty of time for Holden to work his way back, re-establish himself for Bolton, and regain the form that once made him one of the top midfielders in the English Premier League. As eager as you may be to see him back on the U.S. team, you need to think about what the past three years have been like for him. The two major injuries, and the more recent setback that cost him all of 2012. Holden has been through a lot, but continues to show the kind of confidence and good nature that makes him an inspiration. It’s easy to see why people are desperate to see him in a U.S. uniform again, but patience is key. Root for his return to Bolton, and let him get settled again for a good while before starting the “Klinsmann call up Holden” campaign.
I can't believe how far Freddy's stock has fallen. I played with and against a lot of current pro players in my day, and Freddy was by far the best one I ever saw.'NewlyRetired said:Ted, what is the feeling of the fan base on what will happen with Freddy? Looks like Barcelona dodged a bullet there.Very glad it seems to be nothing too serious, obviously. I wasn't happy that he played yesterday, but he is notorious for getting pissed off when he doesn't play, even if the match means absolutely nothing. So I can understand why Tito played him for 30 minutes or so. Hopefully this knock will give Messi a little more perspective and make it easier for him to sit out matches that don't mean squat.GREAT JOB, BARCA!Messi startingplaying tomorrow. I hate this.
Morph, where in your playing days did you cross paths with Freddy? Was there ever any hush talk even back then relating to his commitment to the game?I think we are on coach number 6 or 7 now who continually references either directly or indirectly items that make it seem like Freddy does not have the mental strength needed to survive the daily grind of league soccer.I can't believe how far Freddy's stock has fallen. His run in that youth World Cup (u17? with Jozy), and specifically his game against Brazil, was the best I have ever seen any US player ever look. Granted, against youth players (including Pato), but still.Morpheus- do you know anybody that's played with him? We keep speculating, based on his repeatedly washing out of pro teams, that something has to be lacking with his practice or off-field work ethic, but it would be interesting to hear something more tangible. It's one of those things where nobody makes a big deal out of it unless something happens (Real Madrid played a lot of their regulars too), but there's just nothing to be gained from it. On the contrary, wouldn't it be a good idea to get someone else some run at the "9" in case there is a substantial injury?1) Great to hear Abidal is doing some training.Looks like Barcelona dodged a bullet there.Very glad it seems to be nothing too serious, obviously. 2) I think Galatasaray and Milan would be the best two draws, in that order. Milan is supposedly selling off even more players during the break to alleviate their debt, so they would likely be easy pickings.

Galatasaray's home game in the round of 16 is a must-view for me. The atmosphere will be insane.I remember hearing Friedel talk about his time in Turkey a couple of years ago. He said there is nothing like it any where he has played. Unfortunately, I don't keep in touch with anybody who used to play with him. But I've heard from a couple of people that he really likes to party.I played against him in both club and ODP games from U12-U17, and I'm not ashamed to admit that he really embarrassed me a couple of times. I'll never forget one move in particular - he beat me to a lose ball, megged me, and took off down the sideline. He slowed down to play a cross, allowing me to catch up to him... and megged me again, causing me to slip and fall on my ### in front of everybody. So of course I decided to retaliate my clipping him off the ball. Ah, the glory days. His run in that youth World Cup (u17? with Jozy), and specifically his game against Brazil, was the best I have ever seen any US player ever look. Just finished game 1 on the DVR. Fantastic game. Maryland was highly favored coming in, as Georgetown in making there first ever appearance in a final 4 college cup. Maryland had beaten Georgetown 28 straight times. Georgetown comes out strong and controls the game but Maryland gets the first goal against the run of play. Georgetown the proceeded to run Maryland off the pitch going up 3-1 including a Kasey Keller Carlos Hermosillo type goal. Maryland appears to finally wake up and pulls one back, but Georgetown immediately scores in response going up 4-2. Maryland then made a handful of subs and just took the game over. Wave after wave of great passing soccer saw them improbably pull both goals back to tie the score at 4-4. Both teams have chances in OT but it goes to PK's in which GTown pulled it out 4-3 to make the finals. Whew, great stuff.Reminder. Final 4 is today. More than a handful of future US National team players have come out of this over the years so it can be fun to watch. David Beckham to join New York Cosmos in return to MLS

Major League Soccer owes a great deal to the exposure the name David Beckham has given them in the past five years. The anticipated departure of the England star since his announcement to leave the LA Galaxy has sparked much debate as what the fallout effects will be. However, according to the Mirror on Nov. 26, he could yet still help the American game in the future.
The latest rumors have Beckham listed not as a future Australian A-League player, West Ham Hammer or even Queens Park Rangers Hoop, but as the next player and partial owner of the reinvigorated New York Cosmos.
Beckham’s close relationship with Cosmos official and former Manchester United teammate, Eric Cantona looks like it could sway the famed free kick artist to remain in the United States as part of Major League Soccer’s most likely next expansion franchise.
The club is scheduled to play their first official season in 2013 as part of the second tier North American Soccer League (NASL) but the chance to open his ownership account in football may be enough to persuade the veteran to make the move to New York.
Becks contract stipulated he can become an owner in any team that as long as it is not in NY.I'm taking this with a giant grain of mud.

And the commissioner confirmed that Beckham's contractual option to own an MLS expansion team at a discounted rate does not necessarily limit him to expansion markets. The recent rumors of Beckham's potential involvement in the LA Galaxy ownership structure is a possibility.
"Anything’s a possibility other than his right to exercise that option in New York," Garber said on Monday's call. "So there is a possibility for him to work with league office to find ways to transfer that option into an opportunity in LA. It's way too premature to talk about that or even speculate about what that would look like. But that opportunity does exist if it meets the approval of the league … David holds the option and the LA Galaxy would have to be part of that discussion."
Horrible.Cazorla deserves a suspension for that, IMO. I just wish there was a review committee that has the power to do this kind of thing... or is there? And Chamberlain with the obvious pushoff foul/no-call that leads to the 2nd (albeit, deserved if you ignore the foul that leads to it) PK.Not saying West Brom deserved anything from the game, as they looked toothless and outclassed. But they didn't deserve to lose by THOSE goals. The referees got together and decided to help the less fortunate this holiday season. Now Arsenal just have to decide if Arteta or Wenger write the thank you card.

why no NY?
Aren't they asking for like a $100M franchise fee for NY2? Wouldn't want to have to give that team to Becks for $10M, prob why they excluded NY in the first place.no idea. The stipulation was in place back in 2007 when he signed his original deal.Becks contract stipulated he can become an owner in any team that as long as it is not in NY.I'm taking this with a giant grain of mud.

But that opportunity does exist if it meets the approval of the league … David holds the option and the LA Galaxy would have to be part of that discussion."![]()
why no NY?
I don't know how the numbers work in his contract for ownership but Becks is not really wealthy enough to be a single owner as most of the other single owners are billionaires and the ones that are not (like the guys that own KC) have a group of owners whose combined wealth is a ton.I never pictured Becks as a singular owner, I always thought he would be part of a group (think like Magic being part of a group that owns the Dodgers).Aren't they asking for like a $100M franchise fee for NY2? Harry Redknapp eyes MLS for loan targets
December 8, 2012
By ESPN.com news services
Queens Park Rangers manager Harry Redknapp plans to raid Major League Soccer for loan players in the January transfer window, with Los Angeles Galaxy striker Robbie Keane the top of his wish list.
Redknapp will meet next week with QPR owner Tony Fernandes for the first time since he replaced Mark Hughes as QPR boss a fortnight ago.
Stephen Dunn/Getty ImagesHarry Redknapp said Robbie Keane is at the top of his wish list of loan targets.
Conscious he has inherited a squad that has looked porous at the back and weak up front, Redknapp plans to impress upon the Malaysian businessman that he needs reinforcements to avoid taking the London club down to the second-tier Championship.
Redknapp is also aware that Fernandes has already pumped millions in to a largely unsuccessful project, and is likely therefore to limit his activity to loan deals.
Tim Cahill and Landon Donovan were also mentioned, but the player who Redknapp is most interested in is Keane, who he signed for Spurs in 2009.
"The MLS market is one that we've got to look at," Redknapp said. "Robbie's a good shout. He probably would be an interesting player. I haven't spoken to him yet, no, but he would be an interesting player. He's a good pro and he would be the ideal type to have around for sure because he would give us something."
Keane left Tottenham for the Los Angeles Galaxy last year but returned to England and enjoyed a successful short-term loan spell at Aston Villa last January, scoring three times in seven games.
Donovan, Keane's Galaxy teammate, has expressed interest in resting this winter rather than returning for a third loan spell in England.
Chris Samba, who left Blackburn for Anzhi Makhachkala last summer, is another of Redknapp's targets, though he conceded a move for the center back was unlikely because of his astronomical wages at the Russian club.
Redknapp also suggested he could be tempted to make a play for Nicolas Anelka if the former Chelsea striker becomes available in January.
Anelka turned his back on the Premier League last season after securing a lucrative move to Chinese club Shanghai Shenhua. But there are claims that the former Manchester City and Real Madrid striker has grown unhappy with life in Asia and is considering a return to Europe.
"He is a good player, a quality player," Redknapp said. "If he's available he will be of interest to people. As far as I know he's gone to China -- I don't know what the situation is with that."
Another more realistic option for Redknapp is Spurs winger David Bentley, whose loan deal with Russian club FC Rostov ends in January.
Although Bentley earned a place in Redknapp's bad books by soaking him live on television with a big bucket of water in 2010, the 65-year-old still holds the winger in high esteem.
Indeed Redknapp is so enthused at the prospect of being reunited with Bentley he accidentally called him David Beckham this afternoon.
"Yeah, he can play, David Beckham," Redknapp said, before correcting himself. "Bentley's a good player. It shows that he must have wanted to play football to go to Russia so credit to him. He could have stayed and took his money but he's gone out to Russia. Dave's a good footballer -- I haven't had problems with him. He was unlucky at Tottenham because he had Aaron Lennon and Gareth Bale (in front of him)."
Absolutely- Becks would provide some capital, but mostly the face to a conglomerate of owners. Wasn't there a group of EPL players linked with ownership of that team in Tampa that somebody here linked recently?I don't know how the numbers work in his contract for ownership but Becks is not really wealthy enough to be a single owner as most of the other single owners are billionaires and the ones that are not (like the guys that own KC) have a group of owners whose combined wealth is a ton.I never pictured Becks as a singular owner, I always thought he would be part of a group (think like Magic being part of a group that owns the Dodgers).Aren't they asking for like a $100M franchise fee for NY2? With MLS expansion fees likely to be over $40M (not including NY), it will be interesting if they give one to Becks for only $10M
http://forums.footballguys.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=305522&view=findpost&p=15061264no one knows how real this is but the group of players tied to it includes Shaun Wright-Phillips, Mikel Jon Obi, Mark Hughes, and Ian WrightThe Wrights in this list are related I think (not by blood but by adoption I think).Absolutely- Becks would provide some capital, but mostly the face to a conglomerate of owners.
