Yikes. This is not the typical Klinsmann tone here. He even goes after Dempsey for no apparent reason. I know what he is saying is mostly true but I wonder what is behind this.Very good read and worth the time to at least glance through it.

Jurgen Klinsmann, the former German star who now coaches the U.S. men's national soccer team, has spent the past 18 months taking his sword to the game's sacred cows in the U.S., determined to point out the shortcomings of a culture that he sees as having largely accepted mediocrity. For players still patting themselves on the back for making the 2002 World Cup quarterfinals, Klinsmann had this to say during a rare in-depth interview last week: "Just because you won a game in the World Cup in the knockout stage, you haven't won anything."In Klinsmann's eyes, nearly all of his players are below the level he demands. Even Clint Dempsey, who scored 23 goals for English Premier League Club Fulham last year, will have to work harder to truly impress his national coach, a former international star who won a World Cup for Germany in 1990."[Dempsey] hasn't made s---. You play for Fulham? Yeah, so? Show me you can play for a Champions League team, and then you start on a Champions League team," Klinsmann says. "There is always another level. If you one day reach the highest level then you've got to confirm it, every year."Then there's Landon Donovan. Long considered this country's greatest player, he is currently an afterthought. Donovan is on another lengthy vacation following the Major League Soccer season, a concept Klinsmann seems to find baffling.Klinsmann recently told Donovan he didn't want him at the U.S. team's January camp or at the match against Honduras in a couple of weeks. "It will be defined over the next year what his role with the national team is. But the ultimate call is mine on whether he fits into my plans or doesn't fit into my plans."And it isn't just the team's stars who are hearing a new message. "Some players are walking around waiting for something to happen, but Jurgen's message is that it's up to you which type of professional you want to be," says Kyle Beckerman, a midfielder who has made 23 appearances with the national team.Soccer remains the last great puzzle in American sports. It's the only widely played sport that the U.S. hasn't come close to conquering. Forget about producing a team that can compete at the highest international level—something the U.S. has managed in nonendemic sports like hockey, archery and rowing—this vast, wealthy, sports-obsessed nation has never even produced a genuine superstar. No one knows why exactly. To Klinsmann, who has an American wife and has lived here for 15 years, it's because the culture has never demanded it. American players begin to feel as though they have made it when they get a college scholarship, or an MLS contract, at 18 or 19. While the rest of the world plays 11 months a year, Americans grow up seeing professional athletes play a seven-month season and taking the rest of the year off.U.S. national team stars Landon Donovan and Clint Dempsey."We don't have the environment telling them nicely, 'OK you had a good week, but next week has to be better, and the next week again,'" he says. "Here it's: 'Oh, take a week off.' No, don't take a week off. If you take a week off as a programmer at Apple, you missed the train, you lost the job. You can't afford it."Dempsey is apparently listening. He joined Tottenham, a more prestigious English side, this season and scored his fifth goal Sunday. "Jurgen is trying to raise the bar for U.S. Soccer, but Clint has met the challenge at every level," said Lyle Yorks, Dempsey's agent.Richard Motzkin, Donovan's agent, said he, too, is taking Klinsmann at his word and knows he will have to earn back a spot on the national team after he rejoins his club, the Los Angeles Galaxy, at some still to-be-determined time later this year. For all involved, Klinsmann has been something of a rude awakening in a country where quasi-anonymous national players can drink in night clubs until 3 a.m. without any repercussions. Play in Italy or Germany, Klinsmann says, "You drink more than two glasses of wine, you get the looks from people."Likewise, early exits from the World Cup don't cause a lot of people in the U.S. to get too hot and bothered. A mere trip to the knockout round has become a cause for celebration.By contrast, Germany's early exit at the 2004 European Championship created a national debate within the government and the media about the direction of the country's development program. It allowed Klinsmann, who was named the national coach at the time, to alter Germany's style from defensive and organized to a more freewheeling, proactive approach that he felt reflected how the country wanted to be seen."We said the only way was we got to attack, we got to go forward," he says. "Maybe it's in our DNA. Maybe it was wrongfully in our DNA in two world wars. Who knows that? I don't know, I was not even born yet. But I just said we Germans, we can't take just defending."Back then, Klinsmann's work drew an international spotlight. One morning last week, the man who once starred at Bayern Munich and Inter Milan trudged alone across an empty parking lot at the Home Depot Center near Los Angeles, lugging a backpack and a shoulder bag to lead practice for his team's second-tier players. The best ones, like the players on every other top national team, were busy with their club teams in the European leagues that play through the winter. Two hours later, he stalked the center of the penalty area, badgering his players during a crossing-and-shooting drill. "Hungry, hungry…Time it, time it…Nice, but no goal. Got to be better."As the U.S. prepares to embark on the final phase of qualification for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, Klinsmann is aiming beyond a decent showing and sees the U.S. as a country that needs to be dictating the action. But its national team has never played that way because, in his view, no one ever demanded it. As a result, the players weren't physically or mentally conditioned to press opponents with the relentlessness of the best teams in the world. Long a believer in the constant monitoring of players, Klinsmann has instilled a system of regularly testing the team's strength and fitness and proscribing specific training regimens so each player can mitigate his deficiencies. Results have been mixed so far. The U.S. team matched its best-ever winning percentage in 2012, but struggled with consistency on the road during World Cup qualifying. "This team needs to measure itself with the best out there in order to get better," Klinsmann says before rushing off to another practice. "That's what we are trying to do."

Good win for South Africa. This tournament needs a good run by the home team. Atmosphere for some of the matches has been lacking.

Here is the full list of stadiums that will be utilized for the Gold Cup this summer. Some of these stadium sizes appear to be ambitious IMO. I know the God Cup tournament drew very well last go around but every team fielded their A side. I don't believe Mexico, US, Costa Rica and Honduras will be fielding any where close to their A sides. It is also interesting to note that there are some field turf fields on this list. The full list of host cities and venues is as follows: Dallas – Cowboys Stadium (Arlington, Texas) Atlanta – Georgia Dome (Atlanta) Baltimore – M&T Bank Stadium (Baltimore) Chicago – Soldier Field (Chicago) Denver – Sports Authority Field at Mile High (Denver) Hartford – Rentschler Field (East Hartford, Conn.) Houston – BBVA Compass Stadium (Houston) Los Angeles – Rose Bowl (Pasadena, Calif.) Miami – Sun Life Stadium (Miami Gardens, Fla.) New York– Red Bull Arena (Harrison, N.J.) Portland – JELD-WEN Field (Portland, Ore.) Salt Lake City – Rio Tinto Stadium (Sandy, Utah) Seattle – CenturyLink Field (Seattle)

I actually lost to Bradford City, as Villa, in the League Cup on Fifa 13 on Monday. My wife kept asking me why the team I was playing against were dressed like a McDonald's crew. And be kind, I'm a new XBox owner and still getting my FIFA feet wet. Villa is now on a roll in the EPL.

I often find Klinsmann baffling, but I think he's on target here. IMO Americans grow up so uncertain about a future in soccer that when they get a good professional contract it's human nature to think they've 'made it.'Though citing a guy who fought tooth and nail to get off Fulham for a CL squad as your example seems an odd choice. Maybe he just didn't want to single out Donovan so went after the squad's other big name too?

There is no context for the quote. He might have been asked specifically about Dempsey there. We have no idea.

yeah I agree, everything he said has a ring of truth to it but it appeared in a tone that was not typical of how we have usually heard JK address the media. And going after Dempsey like that who arguably has had the best career so far of any US field player is a bit bizarre although luckily unlike Landon's more sensitive nature, Dempsey likely won't be bothered by this (I hope).

Yeah, it's weird to judge that article. Nothing in the content feels much different, but he's normally said the same things in a more diplomatic, Tony Robbins way.I think Deuce understands exactly what he means, and maybe the message is as much for Altidore and Deuce. JK clearly wants the entire team constantly trying to move up and class and prove themselves. But guys have stalled their career doing that in the past. One thing we can say for Klinsmann is that he seems to really work his contacts to try to get guys moves, even when they get in a bad situation. But I don't think the problem is mostly attitude. It's a systemic thing, that is only going to change as more Americans come up through academies (here and abroad). There was a time when it was unheard of for an American to be a highly regarded youth team player for a big team. We now have guys in the program who are among the better rated players in the Liverpool and Bayern Munich youth system. Players who have been in highly competitive environments from an early age. That can't be replaced by attitude. When we start getting Altidores and Gatts coming up through high quality training environments, we'll be more competitive. But even then, it's going to be hard to be reliably competitive. England isn't reliably competitive. Once get out of Brazil, Germany, Argentina (kind of), Holland, and Italy, it's hard to find a consistently competitive team.

The academies are going to be extraordinarily important IMO, but I also think it could be ~15 years before we see any consistency coming out of them. The US probably needs 5 years to work out the kinks and continue to build the infrastructure and another 10 years to allow kids to grow up in the academies. One strange item about the academies that was shown on that detailed report I linked too earlier was that the Revs, who are typically thought to have the worst organization in the league, some how graded out the highest on the academy report out of 77 different ones who were compared.

somebody please post a video of this red card when they find it. Fascinating stuff. Can he be suspended for league games for an offense like this?

The red card ban applies to all games, league included. If he really kicked a ball boy I would expect a healthy dose of additional games as well.

There's a gif of the kick in the game thread at bigsoccer. I'm on a phone so can't be bothered to link it. The kid has some balls on him for sure - bending down to pick up a ball then falls onto it and lays on it while Hazard stands there, then doing a Rivaldo level acting job after Hazard tapped his foot at the ball. Definite red and probably at least 3 FA games for Hazard, but he needs the rest.

Caught the video. Yeah, he actually kicked the ball boy in the chest. Hazard had to be escorted into the tunnel. The ball boy was laying on the ball, which was kind of odd, but it's still just a kid.The ban will be interesting. I'm guessing he gets an added extension.

He did?Maybe I wasnt paying attention.
That's what it looked like. It definitely wasn't a tap, but he hit the ball as well so it's hard to tell how big a blow the kid took.

:lmao: :lmao:I love the spin :)

By the way, Cantona got 8 months when he decided to drop kick someone. I'm pretty sure he'll be extremely lucky with only 3 games, I'd expect more in the 10 game suspension range.

Would it matter if the kid bragged about wasting time for the Swans on twitter pregame? 3 is the minimum for Hazard I agree.

No. Maybe whomever oversees the ballboy should tell him to knock it off and act professional, but it doesn't justify being kicked by a player. As an Oscar owner in fantasy, this does bode well for the near term.

With Victor Moses off in Africa, you may want to look at Marko Marin, although he's been mostly crap so far.

Of course not, and the FA won't care either.

They are so deep I doubt they skip a beat. It's more embarrassing than anything. The press is going to crucify them.Suarez is probably jumping for joy.

When I saw Chelsea play this summer... vs PSG? can't remember- at Yankee Stadium... Marin was the best guy on the field for Chelsea. He's definitely got the skills but maybe hasn't adjusted to the English game yet. When I've seen him during real games, he seems a bit off the pace and off the timing with his teammates. Also tries to do too much when simpler options are available.

I was wondering how the kid ended up on the ground. Hazard pushed him, then kicked him... . He's totally ####ed.
totally ####ed.the video I watched- didn't really look like he pushed him first time as much as reached for the ball and the kid turned and went to ground with the ball under him. Hazard tries to get the ball and the kid lays harder- then the kick.is there a video that shows clearly that Hazard pushed the kid to the ground?

Probably. He seems like a punk. You still can't kick him in the ribs though (its being reported that Hazard actually kicked him in the ribs and didn't get much of the ball).

They keep getting deleted. I've only seen one with the entire sequence. It actually all happens pretty quickly.
