Jesus Christ. NY looks for months to sign a new coach and they end up naming the care taker, Mike Petke as the head coach. Nothing like hiring your 17th choice. That being said, I am happy for Petke. Always seemed like a good guy and made the most out of a limited set of skills

HARRISON, NJ (Jan. 24, 2013) – The New York Red Bulls announced today that they have named Mike Petke head coach effective immediately. Petke, who is one of the club’s most popular all-time players and its leader in games played, was previously serving New York as head coach on an interim basis.“Mike is very passionate about our club and has shown us that he has the leadership and organizational qualities to be our head coach,” said Red Bulls Sporting Director Andy Roxburgh. “He is a terrific servant for this club, from being a top player to most recently heading our reserve squad. Mike has earned this opportunity and he will have the full support of our staff to help ensure the team’s success. We believe that his experience both as a player and coach in American soccer will be a significant asset as we head into the 2013 season."“Ever since I joined New York in 1998, this is the club that has always been closest to my heart. I am thrilled to have earned this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. It is truly a dream come true,” Petke said. “I know there is a lot of work ahead and our challenge is not easy. However, I am excited to take hold of my new responsibility and hopeful that I can help build a hard-working team that our club’s loyal supporters can all be proud of.”Petke, 36, just finished his second season as an assistant coach on New York’s staff after an illustrious playing career. He joined the coaching ranks in 2011 following a 13-year career that included two playing stints with the club from 1998-2002 and 2008-10. The Bohemia, NY native holds the current club record for games played, with 169 (196 in all competitions), games started (158 regular season) and minutes played (14,060 regular season).Drafted by New York in 1998 with the 8th overall pick in the MLS Draft, Petke made his debut on April 17, 1998 against the Chicago Fire. He helped the team to its first Eastern Division title in 2000 and was thrice named an MLS All-Star. Petke was traded to D.C. United before the 2003 season and won his only MLS Cup in 2004 with United. He was then traded to Colorado during their 2005 campaign, helping the Rapids to reach the Western Conference Finals. The Red Bulls signed Petke again at the end of 2008 and he played 35 more matches for the team until retiring in 2010. He was named the club’s 2009 Defender of the Year and helped New York to its second Eastern Conference regular season title in his final season. Petke finished his career with 307 appearances in league play (351 in all competitions), in which he scored 13 goals and added four assists. He is one of 16 MLS players who has appeared in 300 or more career regular season matches. Petke also appeared in nine playoff matches and 13 U.S. Open Cup matches as a member of the New York franchise and earned two caps for the United States.Prior to his professional career, Petke spent four years at Southern Connecticut State University, leading the team to the NCAA Division II National title in 1995.

Oh man, I hope that Atlético can get past Sevilla in the semis to meet either RM or Barça in the Final. Maybe they'll be able to win something other than Europa.

Williams has a pretty nice gig right now as the head coach of a very talented US U17 national team. My guess is that he will move into a club coaching position after this U17 cycle is done (assuming they don't crash and burn in the qualifiers).

Wow, I can't believe it has been 10 years already.

CARSON, Calif. -- The home of the Los Angeles Galaxy and Chivas USA could have a new name by the end of the year.

The $70 million, 10-year naming rights agreement for the Home Depot Center expires in May, and Jean Niemi, a spokeswoman for the home improvement company, tells The Associated Press it will not be renewing the deal. Anschutz Entertainment Group, which owns the Galaxy, says it's in the "final stages" of negotiations with a new naming rights partner for the sprawling complex.

The 125-acre Home Depot Center includes facilities for tennis, track and field, baseball, basketball and other sports. It's also an official training site for U.S. Olympians.

Has there been any word on how Swansea will be penalized for employing a ball boy who admitted he was going to time waste to help his team?

Chelsea news

Eden Hazard charged in ball boy scuffle

January 25, 2013

The Football Association on Friday charged Chelsea winger Eden Hazard with violent conduct for kicking a ball boy during a League Cup semifinal match against Swansea.

The FA said Friday the normal three-match ban that is a mandatory sanction for violent conduct "was clearly insufficient."

Hazard has until Jan. 29 to respond to the charge, the FA said on its website.

"The FA will remind all clubs of their responsibilities in ensuring ball boys and other personnel around the pitch act in an appropriate manner at all times and will liaise with competitions accordingly," the FA said on its website.

The Belgium winger apologized to the ball boy on Wednesday -- and will not face criminal charges.

Worse for the European champions, however, is having to face further accusations that its millionaire players are out of control, soon after the racism scandals involving John Terry, Ashley Cole and John Obi Mikel that blighted 2012.

"It is an extraordinary incident," former referee Dermot Gallagher said. "There's no defense for that. Someone said it was borne out of frustration but you have to accept it. It was an extreme, but you can't have that at a football match."

The incident sparked a flurry of activity on social networking sites and induced imaginative headlines in British newspapers, such as "Ed Case," "Occupational Hazard" and "Boots of Hazard." BBC radio has already been referring to it as "Ballboygate."

Many ex-professionals have reacted with sympathy for Hazard, who was attempting to get the ball back into play as quickly as possible with Chelsea needing two late goals to force extra time in the second leg. The match finished 0-0, with Swansea progressing to the final 2-0 on aggregate.

Everton midfielder Steven Pienaar wrote on Twitter: "I'm not saying it's the correct thing 2 do but when in the heat of the moment u just want the ball."

I don't think they will. It would have to be proven that they knew about it an still allowed him to be a ball bloke, no? HE should be banned for a while, but I don't think Swansea should/will get anything done against them.

didn't he publish the fact that he was going to do it before the game on his twitter account? He is an employee of the club and as such they can't hide behind the fact that "we didn't know he was going to do it" IMO.

Someone linked the tweet where he talked about wasting time earlier in the thread. And companies get punished for the actions of their employees all the time.

Is a ball boy really an employee?

I think so, yes. He is representing the team in an official capacity in a position that has to be approved by the team. This is not like a supporters club member who does something that the club has no control over. Whether he gets paid or has benefits is not really in play IMO.

In the "weird rumors I see when work slows down and I'm left to troll Big Soccer" file, apparently Nigel Reo Coker (who is married to an American) wants to move to MLS (Red Bulls or possibly Timbers) with an eye toward trying to get quick US citizenship a la David Regis and play for the Nats. Not my favorite guy in the world (I found him getting Bradley's playing time at Villa inexplicable), but he'd seem to be a step up from Beckerman or Edu in the "last DM on the team category." Klinsmann is supposed to be an admirer, maybe because he could achieve his fantasy of playing an entire midfield of functional box-to-box runners.

Weak penalty awarded in the closing minutes of the Nigeria-Zambia game. Zambian keeper Kennedy Mweene took the kick and beat his opposite number. Both clubs have 2 pts and need a result going into the final group games.

This is another interesting young player coming to MLS this season.

NEW YORK — Add another dangerous attacking player to the 2013 Colorado Rapids. The club landed Cameroonian international winger Charles Betrand Etoundi Eloundou (a.k.a. Charles Eloundou) in a lottery conducted on Friday morning at MLS league headquarters. The Rapids had a 73.5 percent chance of landing the rights to the player, beating out Real Salt Lake (19.7 percent) and D.C. United (6.8 percent).Eloundou was available to MLS clubs via lottery due to the fact that he was signed to an MLS contract before the SuperDraft, but he did not obtain his visa in time to make him available for the MLS Player Combine or the SuperDraft. He arrives in MLS on a one-year loan from Cameroonian side AS Fortuna de Mfou with an option for a permanent transfer at the end of the 2012 season. The pacey and skilful 18-year-old has experience with Cameroon's youth national teams (Under-17 and Under-20) and he's also spent time on loan at Cameroonian sides Unisport FC (nine goals in 20 matches last year) and Cotonsport."He's a young kid who can play either left wing or right or maybe even underneath a lone striker," Rapids technical director Paul Bravo told MLSsoccer.com on Friday. "He's explosive and he's got good technique. And for a '94 [player], he's got a lot of great starting points that made it well worth it for us getting involved in this lottery."Eloundou was called up as part of the Cameroon senior squad for an upcoming friendly on February 6 in Dar es Salaam alongside the likes of world stars Samuel Eto'o and Alex Song. The Rapids expect him to join their preseason training camp by the second week of February."He's built low to the ground and he's best when he's running at people," continued Bravo. "He has 1-v-1 ability and an ability to run by guys with ease."The Rapids have built a new-look attacking line in Oscar Pareja's 4-3-3 formation as newcomers Edson Buddle, Deshorn Brown, Kevin Harbottle, Atiba Harris and Eloundou join the returning Tony Cascio and Andre Akpan. With the addition of Eloundou, Colorado now have two international spots available on their roster for future acquisitions.
