I am loving that result. It keeps Everton within 4 points of the Champions League qualifying spot.

With only 1 defeat in their past eighteen matches, the Toffees are rollin'.

Miro Klose needs surgery and is out for at least two weeks, possibly the season. With Toni, Ribery, Altintop and Borowski also suffering from nagging injuries (and Donovan back in LA, and Podolski already mentally gone to Cologne), Bayern's season is now in danger.

Took him long enough to get that last few didn't it?OK, send me a link to the avatar. I'll change it. Remind me how long the avatar is supposed to be there? I had really gotten used the wolf mask guy.

It surprised me but Atlético bounced back today and won 3-2 over Villarreal. They were down 0-2 and then they managed to score 3 goals in the 2nd half. They caught a lucky break as a Villarreal defender got 2 yellows in the span of about 3 minutes to get send off around min 60 or so. This team is a heart attack every time they are on the field. It's damn near addicting to watch them though, as usually their games are high scoring affairs.

This puts them in 5th, 2 points behind Villarreal. They still have a shot at making to back into the CL next year. Real dropped another 5 goal game yesterday on Atletic (5-2) in the Bernabéu. If Barça falters against Almería (highly doubtful) that will put Real only 3 points behind them. There are 10 games left in the season, so it's not quite over. They have to go on the road to Real and Valencia, which could prove to be tough games, plus they have Villarreal and Sevilla left as well.

Also, Forlán scored the equalizer in the 81st.

Use the one in my profile. It's yours until the kickoff of next season. :D
I *think* I changed it. If you don't see it, I think I'll have to manually resize it or something.

Argh such a struggle to find a men's league team. I realize no one here reads my soccer-playing posts, but I'm searching for a team for the summer. Putting out feelers to friends who are on teams, posting "player looking for a team" on forums, etc. Such a hassle...

Anyone else playing this summer?

Come on down to Atlanta, there's plenty of leagues to choose from. So our first game of the spring season is last weekend......about 3 minutes into the game, the other team has a quick counter. I'm playing left back....the center mid from the other team passes it outside for a quick give and go. I'm tracing the right forward down the flank while I thought my center defender was covering the middle. The pass back to the center mid sees him pretty much unopposed coming down the middle of the field. I rush back to try and cut the angle. My goalie comes out and makes a slide in an attempt to disrupt the midfielder. The ball caroms off the goalie towards his right. I hope over our goalie and cut towards the ball as one of their forwards also rush to the ball. Without a player in goal, the forward wants to make a quick shot but I am barreling down on him (6'2", 225). He dries to loft it over me with a pretty hard shot, I jump from about 10 feet away. I inadvertently throw up my hand for protection. Well.....the ball hits my hand and deflects. Whistle blows. Red card. Handball in the box for stopping an obvious goal opportunity. :( Three minutes into the first game and I'm sitting on the bench. Haven't even broke a sweat. :bag: And I miss the next game too. :bag: :bag: It was part reactionary to the ball coming straight at me but far from on purpose. One of the guys on the other team even came over at halftime and said that everyone on the field had a collective "oof" when it happened. :boxing: I felt like an idiot.

:lmao: nothing you could really do though....were you protecting your face or like trying to save the shot over your head?It looks like I have found a team, actually. Outdoor season doesn't start til the first week of May.....the team is in the 3rd best league out of 4. I know that I'm a borderline Premier Division player (current and former college players, mostly) but I'll take what I can get at this point. Maybe I can find a better team to move on with next season, or maybe we'll get promoted (it's a promotion/relegation system). :goodposting:It's pretty cool though cause we get to play in the real preliminary stages of the US Open Cup, which should be cool. The way it works is....There's a local Cup called the Wood Cup. The winner of the Wood Cup gets an entry into the US Open Cup entry rounds....so basically, all the teams who register (my team included) are playing in the "conference tournament", to put it in college basketball terms. While I doubt we'll win it, it will still be cool to play.

I think subconsciously I was trying to block the shot because I knew the goalie wasn't back there but it was more reactionary/protection than anything. If the goalie was back there, I probably wouldn't have done it but then again, who knows. It wasn't as bad as what our center defender did last year. He plays part time keeper but this game he was playing center D. The ball came up over his head and he grabbed the thing like a rebound before dropping it to the ground after realizing what he did. Apparently he was a little confused as to what position he was playing that game. :lmao:

It sure doesn't help, but with 3 goals total in two of the last three matches I don't think Poldi has checked out to Köln yet.On Klose's injury:
Bayern's selection problems continued to mount at the weekend after Miroslav Klose joined Luca Toni, Franck Ribéry, Hamit Altintop and Tim Borowski on the injury roster. Germany international Klose partially ruptured a tendon in his right ankle early in Saturday's 3-0 win in Bochum, an injury which will have to be repaired surgically. The length of the striker's enforced spell on the sidelines cannot yet be determined."It's a bad diagnosis and a real setback for us," commented Jürgen Klinsmann, "we're wishing Miro all the best, we hope it all goes well, and that he's back on his feet again very soon." Klose turned the ankle on a divot in the bumpy Bochum pitch, hobbling off the field shortly afterwards. "I felt something go," he reported immediately afterwards, a suspicion confirmed by an MRI scan on Sunday.Toni on track to returnKlose, currently the leading scorer at the club with 20 goals this season, is definitely out of Bayern's home Bundesliga meeting with Karlsruhe next Saturday. He will also miss Germany's 2010 World Cup qualifiers at home to Liechtenstein (28 March) and away to Wales (1 April). The injury misery leaves Lukas Podolski as Bayern's only fit senior striker. "It's a very awkward situation," observed Klinsmann, "my hope is that Luca Toni will be ready in time for the next match. We have a good feeling in this respect." The Italian has been laid low with an Achilles problem for the last three weeks, but is set to resume the team training programme on Tuesday. "That's enough time for him to get back up to speed for Saturday," Klinsmann remarked.Comeback hopes for Ribéry and BorowskiThe FCB head coach is confident Ribéry will soon return from a two-week lay-off caused by a bruised shin. Borowski (hamstring) is also making good progress, continuing his recovery on Sunday in an outdoor training session supervised by assistant coach Nick Theslof.

The last news I read was that Klose is out six to eight weeks, he is now in rehab. Ribery will be back for the weekend game and Toni might return then too or one game later.Landon Donovan is back in the US, it didn´t work out.

There's a shocker....Don't get me wrong, I love the guy, he's possibly the greatest American soccer player of all-time, but IT'S NOT GOING TO WORK FOR YOU IN GERMANY.If he's really got his heart set on Europe, maybe he could play in Scotland, the Netherlands, Greece....one of the lesser but still top 10 leagues. I mean, I would have jumped at the chance to trial with Bayern, just to say that I played with one of the world's best clubs, but he had to know that it wasn't going to last.

I thought Klinsmen wanted to extend his loan through the end of the season ala Beckham, but the Galaxy liked that thought even less? Or was I completely off base?

I'm not sure what the Galaxy's take was, but he didn't impress the people above Klinsmann enough to get a stay. There are plenty of other opportunities in the Bundesliga other than Bayern. The only reason he ended up there was because of the connection to Klinsmann.

That's it. Thanks.

I think Donovan should play in Europe, just not in Germany, England, or Italy. Spain would be a better fit, as would Scotland or even Portugal.

A German buddy of mine explained in an email that Rummenigge announced last month that Bayern wants to groom a younger player for their 4th striker position (after Klose/Toni, and thier top reserve, Ivica Olic, who they signed from Hamburg for next season). Klinsmann was pretty high on Donovan and gave him some good playing time, and it apparently became clear that he is not physical enough for the Bundesliga and would lose the ball too often against the tough European defenders. Perhaps he could adjust to the more physical play with time, but the #4 striker doesn't get much time at Bayern, so perhaps he could take a shot with another team in Germany or elsewhere. He also mentioned that the 8-10 mil Euros MLS would demand is probably too much even for a team like Bayern to pay for a reserve striker.

Interesting info :lmao:How about with Cherundulo's squad... Energie Cottbus (or something like that)? I'd imagine they're a bottom rung squad that could use a decent forward- maybe not for what MLS would want for Landy.Seems to me the closest player to Donovan, playing stylewise, that has had a decent run in Europe is DMB in Holland. Maybe the speedy, quick-footed type of player that isn't built to win the aggression battle has a better chance there?

LD needs to go somewhere where he won't be abused by physical defenders, and where there's enough passing for him to get into channels to create. I've noticed that LD doesn't create well from starting from a stop. He's at his best when he's constantly moving and taking passes at 50% speed, accelerating and dumping or slotting home a shot. So which leagues play like that? Not Germany and not England IMO. Holland, Scotland, Spain, Portugal, France, and some others fit the bill here IMO. His passing isn't quite finesse enough to warrant play on a good team in Spain though. They'll want someone with a bit more touch and one-touch passing.

Totally off the subject, but I'm really starting to like the Villarreal team. They play almost exactly like Spain (the national team) plays. They have a good, youngish goalie in Diego López (27), and having Senna play DMF destroyer helps there too. Robert Pirès and Cani both play very well as attacking MFs. Rossi and Llorente have formed a pretty hot striker partnership, much like David Villa and Fernando Torres. They are a good, solid team through and through. I think that they're the 3rd best team in Spain right now, and probably deserve to be in Champions more than Sevilla or my beloved Atleti (although I don't hope it happens).

I don't see why Donovan couldn't get a bit of PT playing for one of those perennial UEFA Cup/Champions League "exit in the group stage" teams in like Belgium, Greece, or the Netherlands.

I think that LD is egotistical enough not to want to play in such a league. Plus, I doubt that those teams could scrape up enough cash for the transfer fee.In other news, the ex-President of Real Madrid said that "one of the best players in the world will be playing for Real next year." The Spanish press is taking this to mean that C. Ronaldo will be in blanco next season.

FIFA has announced the official bids for WC 2018 and WC2022

England, Australia, Belgium and the Netherlands, Indonesia, Japan, Mexico, Russia, Spain and Portugal, and the USA have all applied to stage the event in either 2018 or 2022 with South Korea and Qatar staking a claim to host it in 2022 only.

I think the US has a good shot at one of these. 2022 would be almost 30 years from the 1994 hosting.

Jesus...Arsenal barely survive 2-1 against Hull in the FA Cup, and it took an offside (uncalled, obviously) goal from Gallas in the 84th to win it.

Did anyone see the end? I just got home and caught the last 10 minutes online....at the end of the match, Phil Brown went to shake hands, and Wenger denied him and just went into the tunnel. Pat Rice went over and shook Brown's hand, but the commentators were calling Wenger classless...what happened? If anyone sees a link on this, let me know.

Can't believe I wasn't around to celebrate the Reds famous win this weekend. Glad to see everyone has kept this thread going.

Anyone signing up for fantasy MLS?

wow, haven't seen JPeace or El Floppo post in this thread in ages and then they both post in the same day :)I usually play MFLS for MLS fantasy but I am probably not going to this year.I am looking forward to the opening game in Seattle tomorrow night on ESPN2. Should be a huge crowd and a lot of fun to see the new team.

Thanks Andy. Glad to know I'm not the only one excited for tomorrow night. Some of my footy snob friends have been giving me stick for being excited about the start of MLS.

:lmao: I like the MLS, I'll probably watch the part of the game that doesn't coincide with 2nd halves of basketball games.

I'm looking into going to a few games this year.

:thumbup:Yeah- I've been really, really busy with family and work. But I got laid off, so now not so much. I guess more FFA time is the silver lining? Oh... I guess more time with the kid too.RedStars are having a nice pre-season... signed a Spanish journeyman who has played for some huge clubs (RM, IIRC) in Spain and Argentina to bolster the MF. I was sorry to see Vandenburgh go- he's a real scrapper but with quality- a great addition to any MF. I'm also looking forward to a massive year from Dane Richards- if he can stay healthy, he could have an MVP type year- mark my words.Holy crap... the season opens tomorrow?!re: the EPL.... very suprised by the form of Fulham. Andy Johnson and Zamora up front have been really productive up front, and taken the strain off last years' overworked MF. That giant scandinavian cat... Hegelund?... center-back has made huge strides upping his game, IMO. He was an embarrassment with the ball at his feet last year and also in a lot of his positioning- but he has been a big reason why they're so good defensively- especially at home.Did anybody actually get to watch the Reds dismantle United? Was it that much of route, or just a matter of the ball bouncing into the goal at the right times for Liverpool? Gotta say, I prefer the style of Liverpool these days (when healthy with Torres) to any team in the Prem... although Arsenal will hopefully finish the season out with the class we're used to seeing from them now that they're getting their full squad back.Great to hear that some of you guys are playing. I've been trying to figure out a way of getting back into things- even if it's just pickup- so that my almost 2yo son can get excited about the sport.

Can't believe I wasn't around to celebrate the Reds famous win this weekend. Glad to see everyone has kept this thread going.

Anyone signing up for fantasy MLS?
wow, haven't seen JPeace or El Floppo post in this thread in ages and then they both post in the same day :) I usually play MFLS for MLS fantasy but I am probably not going to this year.

I am looking forward to the opening game in Seattle tomorrow night on ESPN2. Should be a huge crowd and a lot of fun to see the new team.
 Yeah- I've been really, really busy with family and work. But I got laid off, so now not so much. I guess more FFA time is the silver lining? Oh... I guess more time with the kid too.

RedStars are having a nice pre-season... signed a Spanish journeyman who has played for some huge clubs (RM, IIRC) in Spain and Argentina to bolster the MF. I was sorry to see Vandenburgh go- he's a real scrapper but with quality- a great addition to any MF. I'm also looking forward to a massive year from Dane Richards- if he can stay healthy, he could have an MVP type year- mark my words.

Holy crap... the season opens tomorrow?!

re: the EPL.... very suprised by the form of Fulham. Andy Johnson and Zamora up front have been really productive up front, and taken the strain off last years' overworked MF. WTF?! Gotta think he'd have a much better chance in the WC with the US than with Norway (nothing against Norway, but they have to gut their way through Europe first). And lol at "The tall Norwegian with his characteristic calm nature is known for combining great aerial ability and physical strength with elegant technique and passing ability." from his wiki page.

Vancouver will be announced this afternoon as the 17th MLS franchise and will build a nice instant rivalry with Seattle in the Pacific northwest.

That leaves the 18th team coming down to just Portland or St Louis now.

I'm still suprised St Louis doesn't have a team. When I was growing up in the 70s and 80s, St Louis was ground-zero for US Soccer.
