 :banned: :banned: GLORY GLORY MAN UNITED!!!!!18th title tying the scum at Pool for most all time. Now we can focus on health and fitness for Barca and the CL Final.I say anyone looking for a team to support go for Everton. Howard is an awesome keeper and they are an up and coming team.
:lmao: Been a faithful Toffee supporter since 2000!

Won 2-1 at home tonight....taking 6 points in the last two games after losing 7-0 in the opener is a definite boost

WTF happened to Newcastle? I mean they're having a bad season, but I never thought they'd be in the relegation zone this late. What a downfall...

I think it is time for Adebayor to go. I don't think his style is the best fit for him and Arsenal. Eduardo, Vela, and/or Bendtner would fill in just fine imo (I'm not a Bendtner fan, btw). Use Adebayor's fee to bring in some help elsewhere.
I think Vela is going to be scary good sometime soon, but I do worry about Eduardo and Bendtner.... Eduardo simply because I wonder if he will ever fully recover from his terrible injury.... Bendtner simply because of attitude and at times work ethic. He has the tools and seems to be progressing nicely in certain games, then doesn't seem to be 'there' in others. As for selling Adebayor and bringing in help, I'm not sure who is available(I suppose everyone is for the right price), but a midfield partner for Cesc is the key.... even more so than their perceived problems at the back in my opinion.

Hey everybody look! MLS!!!!.... ....
It has been a quiet year so far. At least the league is still drawing in ok numbers, of which many feared the economy might crush. It helps that Seattle is going to break LA's 13 year old attendance record from way back in 1996. Phili's expansion team finally got a name and some colors last week and should be a nice addition to the league next year.

I've caught a handful of games on TV and have been happily suprised at the level of play in the early going this season (other than that abysmal RedStars performance on opening day).I'd like to see more emphasis put on getting guys to attack with the ball at feet- but I get the reasons for not going that way.

Floppo,

Are you anywhere near where this palace is being built in Harrison?

http://www.earthcam.com/clients/redbullarena/
As the crow flies, very close. But without a car, not so much. Hoping public transportation will be easy. Wow- looking a little like a mini-Arizona Cards stadium with that metal skin... And notice that it's right next door to Soccertown USA, Kearny NJ.
I have heard the public transportation is suppose to be very good to the new stadium but I am unfamiliar with the area. Here is some info on the web site:PATH TRAINS

The PATH trains from New York, Hoboken and Newark all stop at the Harrison PATH station.

From New York City

From World Trade Center. Take the PATH Train towards Newark (Red Line) and exit at the Harrison station (second to last stop). Estimated travel time is 20 minutes. Exit the station onto Frank E. Rodgers Boulevard. Red Bull Arena in three blocks to the east.

From 33rd Street Station, take the Yellow Line to Journal Square or Grove Street. At Journal Square or Grove Street, transfer to the Red Line towards Newark. Exit at the Harrison station (second to last stop). Exit the station onto Frank E. Rodgers Boulevard. Red Bull Arena in three blocks to the east.

From Hoboken

From Hoboken, take the Yellow/Blue to Journal Square or Grove Street. At Journal Square or Grove Street, transfer to the Red Line towards Newark. Exit at the Harrison station (second to last stop). Exit the station onto Frank E. Rodgers Boulevard. Red Bull Arena in three blocks to the east.

From Newark: Take the PATH train (Red Line) towards World Trade Center and exit at the Harrison station (one stop). Estimated travel time is two minutes. Exit the station onto Frank E. Rodgers Boulevard. Red Bull Arena in three blocks to the east.

Wow! If it's really 3 blocks from a PATH train (which are essentially subways that connect NJ to NYC), I'm GOLDEN! It is going to be much easier to get there than it was to Giant's Stadium... great news!I might finally buy the season tickets I've been wanting to buy since the inaugural season.

eta: I just got this close to getting weepy over the prospect of taking Floppo Jr to see some pro ball as he gets older.

now if they can just put together a team 1/3 as attractive as the stadium will be :moneybag:

Anybody else excited about the confederations cup?
Should be some good games, and some not so good games. The groups with fifa rankings from May 6:Group A1 Spain77 South Africa78 New Zealand86 IraqGroup B4 Brazil5 Italy15 USA37 EgyptCrazy.
I am excited for the Confederation's Cup, it will be a good opportunity to see how the US stacks up. Those groups are insane though.
I wonder if the US will send a real team or lambs to the slaughter again like they did in the last Copa America...?

I'd imagine it'll be combo. They'll want to get the "real" guys a chance to make that trip and play in those conditions- and they'll be wanting to see some fringe guys give it a go. Now that I've typed that out- wtf... it should be our best-bet 18 period. Get those real guys to SA and give them a chance to play in WC conditions- forget fringe guys.

I have to think they are going to being playing to win here (not that they will), but even a good showing here might help in WC grouping.

It is clearly set up to get SA to advance.

Clearly. But also to get a game in against the best team in the world (right now) without too much stress of getting a result- knowing that they've got two other games that they should get points from.

I believe a large part of the thinking behind their focus on winning the Gold Cup rather than competing in the Copa was specifically so they could play in this tournament. I think it was discussed in this thread back when those games were being played. I expect US Soccer to send as close a team as possible to what they expect will play in S.Africa next summer. Not only will they get top notch competition, but will get some familiarity with the venues for 2010. The benefits of putting our best guys in the Copa against the top south american teams loses out in my opinion to the benefit of playing these games in South Africa a year before the world cup. I love the fact that the grouping gives the US guaranteed games against Italy and Brazil.

In it's entirety, this is the right answer. But I still get worried about the US advancing- this next pair of games will show us where the USMNT really stands.

Shakhtar over Bremen 2-1 after extra time in the UEFA Cup final.

That's two straight titles for a team from Ukraine Eastern Europe.

No Diego I guess was too much for Bremen.Did you watch the game? Any good?
I watched most of the match, I missed the second 15 of extra time.It was a pretty good game that was fairly fast past and back and forth. Both teams had several good chances. Tim Wiese made some great saves for Bremen that kept the score down. Bremen's one goal was a nice free kick that the Shakhtar keeper flubbed. He seemed to change his mind between punching the ball clear and catching it and instead just knocked it down but its pace carried it in.Shakhtar were the better team on the night. Interestingly, of the 7 or 8 corners I saw them take, all but one were quick and short. I'm guessing they must have figured they didn't have the size inside to win anything in the air.

Zenit is in Russia. :goodposting:
St. Pete right?
correct.also, the Moscow club (CKSA or similar??) won it a few years ago. It seems the former soviet bloc clubs have a strangle-hold on Europe's B-side tournament. Look for FC Bratislava United to make a big run next year.

Big final day in the Bundesliga tomorrow.

Wolfsburg host Werder Bremen who are 10th in the table and just played Wednesday in the UEFA Cup final. With a win or a draw Wolfsburg win their first ever German crown.

Bayern München host VfB Stuttgart in the battle for second or first if Wolfsburg stumble. Second is important because the top two in Germany auto qualify for the Champions League, third has to play in the qualifiers.

Spots 4 and 5 are for the Europa Cup.

It looks like Gol TV is going to be showing the Wolfsburg/Bremen and Bayern/Stuttgart games at the same time. I'm not sure how they will be doing it, but I will be watching.

Okay, let's get this thread back on track.

First

next, if the reports are true with the United lineup, this is the preferred team, imho. You gotta give Giggs a start here, and on the World's biggest stage seems like the perfect opportunity. Park's hustle is exactly what will be needed in this game. I think Tevez would be a fine substitute, if need be, but I love Ronaldo being given the freedom to play striker alongside Rooney. A fit Evra and Rio will solidify the back 4 and having Carrick on the field will allow Evra to make long, attacking runs. I think Barca is going to be under constant pressure.

There's been plenty of talk of Tevez moving after the season, and I'm pretty sure that's going to happen. Even though the money coffers are pretty solid, Tevez will bring in a nice bounty in transfer moneys, and we are already saddled with Berbatov's contract. United's got a ton of young talent, that isn't quite ready to play full time yet, so they may need to bring in an experienced midfielder/attacker on a 1-2 year contract. Rumors of Ribery are still swirling, although I'm not so sure that's going to happen.

As to where Tevez winds up is anyone's guess. I'd kinda not like to see him show up in Anfield, as this will allow Liverpool to sit Kuyt, and being that I find him pretty useless, this will help their side. Babel and Alonso may be on their way out, so Liverpool is going to be quite active in the transfer market. Tevez makes a lot of sense to go there, I would just hope a premium is added to allow him to go to a rival club.

Aston Villa really fell apart during the second half of the season. I'm pretty surprised about this, as they had pretty much their entire side intact all year and have a great manager. Sure, they were playing over their heads early, but I thought they would overtake Arsenal into the top 4, as Arsenal has fallen on hard times. Gunners have a bunch of good young talent, but lost so much between injury to Fabregas, Flamini and Hleb leaving, et al. I really dont think Walcott, Nasri or Vela are 1/3 as good as Arsenal supporters think they may be. Team needs some veteran leadership and were let down big time by Van Persie this year, again, imho.

I can't believe Everton jumped ahead of Villa either, in particular when you take into account a big part of the season was played without Arteta who is leaps and bounds their most dynamic offensive threat. Just a great example of a team that plays well together.

Speaking of teams that don't play well together, wtf is up with Newcastle. Can you imagine the likes of Vidulka, Owen, Martins playing in the Championship league?

wake me up next Wednesday.

United would get nothing for Tevez. He is one of a few players that are owned by a third party. United basically leased him for two years with an option to buy him at the end of the lease for a sum somewhere around 20-25 million (pounds?). If United doesn't pay the claiming fee (for lack of a better term) then Tevez remains under contract with his third party owners and they are free to lease or sell his rights to whomever they please with no additional compensation to United.

ah, then I was mistaken. I thought this had been hashed out earlier and that United worked out an agreement with the company that owned Tevez and he was now their property. I've been wrong plenty of times before, sorry for the misinformation.

Its just a really weird situation all around. I recall reading an article that had Sir Alex stating that while he would like to buy Tevez, he didn't feel comfortable putting money outside of the traditional football market. Meaning that the money spent to buy Tevez would go straight to the pockets of his owners instead of to another team that would then reinvest that money into their team by way of buy other players, paying wages, etc. I know the FA has done a lot of investigations around Tevez and Mascherano because they both came to the Premiership in the same fashion.
