The second goal against Mexico was a pretty good one too, O'Brien to Lewis to Donovan. Quaranta's goal was so nice because it was a string of passes executed under pressure in tight spaces, something which the US has almost always been unable to execute. That was well done, and it was great for me to see Davies delivering the final pass because I have certainly questioned his vision during the Confed Cup. Seeing the US pull off a goal like that after their good play against Spain and Brazil has me almost too excited. I hope the US can carry some of this play over to the qualifiers.

Ohhhh I get it....you're saying the last 13 goals that the US has scored was during the run of play. I thought you were saying that they had scored 13 consecutive during the run of play without giving one up, which is where I was getting hung up...

correct! I am only talking about how we have scored.I have not done the research but instinct tells me there have not been many streaks higher than 13 in the US' history in terms of consecutive run of play goals.

, this to me has been the most exciting development of the summer. After the Italy and 1st Brazil game, I read some comments calling our team the United Set-Pieces of America. The ability to score goals from free play against established teams, combined with our strong organization on set-pieces. Now we're getting somewhere!

His lack of speed or burst definitely showed last night. He had at least four opportunities to attack a good ball and he just didn't get there. I'm glad they tried him up front though. Good to see him moved around to see where he fits in best. I was hoping Davies was coming in for Ching as Ching was having a terrible game himself up to that point. Would have liked to see Adu and Davies together. Keeping Ching turned out to be a right move as that header was awesome. The only guy falling faster down the depth chart than Adu imo is Sacha.
The oterh side of this is they ahven't done much on set pieces.

Sacha is either really good or really bad. Last year/early this year, he was really good. Lately, he's been really, really bad.

I missed watching a lot of last night's match, but had it on in the background as I did stuff around the house. What the hell was wrong with that announcer? I have never heard an announcer get so excited, nearly to the point of screaming, on a play that doesn't even result in a shot on goal. And then when the US finally scored, he screams "YEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!" to the point where his voice was actually cracking. I realize that it's the US feed to US fans, but when did that a) become acceptible and b) anyone in their right mind would commentate like that? I've never seen that level of homerism from announcers, and I've seen some White Sox games.

Max Bretos is like "the guy" at FSC. He did the Grenada game too.
He does a lot of the Argentinian games that they show. He's clearly bilingual, as you can hear the Spanish twang in his voice when he pronounces Spanish names.
I don't really mind him, actually. He's not great, but it's better than nothing.

This is a fair point, but as a developing nation I think it is better to see the US scoring from the run of play instead of Gooch or Boca winning a header on a corner that causes a scramble for a goal.I don't think we are going to lose our set piece instinct, but developing the confidence to string together passes to score is going to take us from a marginal top 20 team to a marginal top 12ish team.Drunken Cowboy said:

Just fyi, that's the last we will see of Adu this year probably as he heads back to Benifica for training camp (this was prearranged, not a reaction to his play). I hope he has a good year and if so, maybe he will get some time in some friendlies leading up to the Cup.
Benny also headed out to Denmark presumably for the same reasons. I think Bradley told them both they better earn regular playing time with the club team if they want to be on the WC roster. If he stays healthy, I can't imagine that will be a problem for Benny given how he's looked.

Spanish annoucers are much more fun. In college, my roommates and I would turn on the Spanish commentary while playing FIFA just to hear "GOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLLLLL!!!" and "OSO OSO OSO OSO."

Yeah, I've heard Spanish announcers like that before. I guess I just never thought about that being basically the same as the guy on FSC last night, just in Spanish. It was still weird how he would raise his voice if any American player came anywhere close to the box. "DAVIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" (followed by a pass)

holy crap. did anyone else just see what i saw in the panama-mexico game? the mexican coach got a red card for kicking a panama player (basically in the groin) and the player reacted and drew a red. that's a hell of a tradeoff for the mexicans. it was almost like woody hayes.

Looks like a few of our national team players are on the move. Davies reportedly heading to France to play for Sochaux. And Altidore got loaned out again by Villareal to Olympiakos. Both seem like pretty good moves and hopefully they both earn a lot of pt.

Just watched the Javier Aguirre clip. He obviously wasn't *trying* to kick the dude in the balls. This wasn't a Rooney stomp. He was trying to stop the Panamanian player from playing the ball out of bounds.
Not to defend him too much, but it's obvious that he's more comfortable using his feet than his hands to stop the momentum of an object and that's what he was trying to do. It surely wasn't malicious. Javier Aguirre isn't really a hothead AFAIK and never really got into it when he was coaching for Atlético in la Liga.
It was a pretty dumb move though and the red was deserved.

Villarreal lost both Nihat and Guille Franco this offseason. Jozy was 5th on the depth chart behind those two. Rossi and Llorente were the starters and they usually played a 4-4-2. Being 3rd on their depth chart would mean that Jozy would see some action, starting in some games and comin on as a sub in others. Sure we'd like to see him get regular starting PT, but being 3rd on a team like Villarreal wouldn't be too shabby.
This is assuming that they don't pick up another striker.
