And for any who are interested, he's a very positive update on the team of 8 and 9-year olds that I coach. After losing our first game 5-2 to a team of older kids, we rebounded with a draw in our second game. In our third, my only game thus far as solo head coach, we won 5-1 after going into halftime at 0-0. Then came the game this past Friday - against the best team in the league. A team of 9 and 10 year olds who had played travel soccer together this past summer and had done well. Last week, I caught the end of their game....they beat a team in our league literally 10-0. I was pretty scared. The game kicks off at 6:50. I worked late and didn't get to the game until 6:39...and the other coach wasn't there. I look into the corner, where the teams warm up, and the other team is there, all organized, running drills. Our kids are scattered around...the arcade, the restaurant, etc. just running around. I round them up and go in for 5 minutes of warmup. The other team is decked out in their full uniform - blue shorts, yellow jerseys, matching socks. Their coaches have the emblazoned "Lockport Soccer Club" polo shirts, all matching. Our kids are wearing various red t-shirts, including one kid who wears a shirt that says "How do you keep an idiot busy for hours? See back." on the front and "How do you keep an idiot busy for hours? See front" on the back, and I have a red t-shirt on myself. I felt like the Bad News Bears. Finally our coach shows up and the other game that's going on ends. The other team's coach blows his whistle and the kids all grab their matching soccer bags and run to the field where they start running more drills. It looks like we're gonna get murdered. Game starts and you can tell their kids are cocky....they're very good, and work well as a team. Within 5 minutes, it's 1-0. But we encourage our kids to be tough and play aggressive....and what they lack in skill, they make up in toughness. Half the team plays hockey, and they're fearless. They start going into challenges and pressuring the other team, and we somehow tie it 1-1. Then right before the half, a mad scramble in front of their net and we're up 2-1. Their coaches and players look stunned.Halftime, and we just tell them to keep fighting, keep playing hard but fair....nothing dirty, but don't give them anything. Well, the other team comes out fired up and they score a quick 2 to go up 3-2. But our kids keep fighting, and we tie it with 6 minutes left. With about 2 minutes remaining, one of our kids actually tries to slide tackle and get the ball, and he completely misses. The kid is one of the most mild-mannered on our team, and I KNOW that it wasn't malicious. Plus, we'd never tell our kids to play dirty - sometimes they'll make comments like "I'm gonna elbow #14" and I have to calm them down and remind them that we're not playing hockey, no one has pads on, and that's not allowed. But regardless, the ref correctly calls a foul, and the other team's coach storms onto the field to stop play - he wants our kid kicked out of the game. Our player has no idea what's going on - he was going for the ball. The other team's coach is LIVID. The game ends in a 3-3 draw. Their players appear stunned, and their coaches are ridiculously pissed. In the handshake, they just go past us stonefaced. After the game, their coach pleads with the ref to get our player suspended, but the ref isn't having it. He explains to us what the other guy is saying, and he laughs that it was clearly not malicious - just a kid who doesn't really know what he's doing who's trying to get the ball. For a team who's played 4 organized games ever to be 1-2-1 with 5 points from 4 games is pretty impressive, IMO.
