I don't watch a lot of Prem games. It sure is striking the difference in the physical presence in the game comprared to la liga. The ref lets a LOT more tackles go without a call.
Absolutely - the pace is different as well, so much up and back. At times it seems like a basketball game.
Yup. And there's very little counter-attacking going on, at least in this game. The attacks are more direct, the tackles are more direct, and there was very little writhing on the ground today as well.Scholes played poorly in my opinion. The United midfield was not good this game, and Chelsea had a great game plan to use the missing pieces in their favor.
I wonder how much having a Champs League match midweek affected United. It seemed as if Chelsea was a half-step quicker for much of the match, and they played with a great level of energy from start to finish. They deserved the win.

I actually watched a full EPL game today. I particularly don't like either of these teams, but regardless of the opponent I always pull against Manchester.

In the other big game today Bayern won at Schalke 2-1 with goals from Ribéry and Müller.

Bayern played the second half a man down after Altintop collected his second yellow right before halfitme.

Bayern are now 1 point above Schalke and 6 above Leverkusen with 5 matches to go.

Now on to Manchester mid week.

I think it definitely had an effect and Malouda said as much in a post-game interview. Chelsea did look a step faster and I dare say "hungrier " than United today. The Premiership title is within reach for them and they are poised to grab it. I bought they'd fade down the stretch with petr cech's injury, but it seems that they played exceptionally without him in the net. A lot of credit needs to go to the leaders on that team. I was scan impressed with Terry's skill, determination, and professionalism at center back. He's gonna be tought to crack for LD and the US team in the WC.

In his interview after the match, Malouda said he thought it did have an effect on the game.

Congrats to Chelsea, they deserved the win.

With that the ref badly missed the offside call that changed the game. 1-0 is ten times different then 2-0. As United saw vs Munich, up 1 can be overcome but up 2 is a different story even with the goal by macheda a minute later. And for a ref that has twice as many PKs given then the next ref, how does he not call any of them? at least 3 PKs could have been given in this game.

I became a United fan in '92 and Giggs has been a favorite for a long time but his body doesnt work as fast as his mind any more. He gave away too many balls and just cant get it done anymore. He and Neville are not starters in big time games. Late subs maybe. Nani should have been in from the start. With the injuries i am not sure who could have been at right back but Rafeal maybe?

Rooney was missed and i like Macheda's future there but with the tough road over the next 5, United may not have a chance for their 4th straight.

United have Blackburn (A), Man City (A), Tottenham (H), Sunderland (A), Stoke (H). Also CL at home vs Bayern and more if they get thru.

Chelsea have Bolton (H), Tottenham (A), Stike (H), Liverpool (A), Wigan (H) and teh FA cup Fianl vs Aston Villa

Both teams need to be weary of Arsenal as well. Tottenham (A), Wigan (A), Man City (H), Blackburn (A), Fulham (H) plus their 2nd leg vs Barca

Quite the finish to come!

well, as i thought i might, i have an extra ticket for the union home opener as my friend backed out. anyone want it for $60? (paid about $65, fees included).
still available. would also be willing to sell both and just buy myself another ticket.

And Chelsea put Arsenal right back in the (outside) title picture.

What are the odds that Kiko makes the Italian national squad in June? 100-1?

Did anyone start the 2010 World Cup thread? I'd like to keep the soccer-haters out of here, and I get the sense that they're going to be showing up soon...

Just watched the Chelsea-United match on DVR. Drogba is such a huge difference maker. Id be much more comfortable with their 2 pt lead if they didnt have to go to Anfield the penultimate game of the season.

Guys on Man City I cannot stand...

Rogue Santa Cruz
Freudian slip?I really liked his game when he was playing for Blackburn.
Gotta agree here too....it's a shame he hasn't really been able to do anything since the move to Man City. One of those pesky goalscorers...

Linesman missed that call - Drogba was clearly offside for that goal.

Macheda answers back for Man U - looked almost as if it went in off his hand.
Offsetting IMO, he was clearly offsides and the replay looked very much like the ball went off of his hand.
The linesman had to have been blocked to miss the Drogba call as he was a full yard offside (but it was a great finish nonetheless). The Macheda goal was a much closer call, but the last replay they showed was very clear in my opinion - he bashed the ball in with his gut, but clearly guided it with his right arm (here's a decent view). I think ManU got the better of the non-calls in the box, with Neville's bulldozer off Anelka being a very clear penalty that was not called. Overall a good game and I think a deserved three points for Chelsea. I haven't seen a ton of ManU this year and was a bit surprised. Park is usually a Chelsea killer and he was nearly invisible. Nani was the most dangerous player once he came on, but there was not enough around him to make it happen. For Chelsea, I was very worried to see Ferriera and Deco starting the game, but they didn't fare too badly. Was happy to see Ballack finally come on for Deco late in the game. The substitutions worked wonderfully, back four was superb, Lampard/Malouda great in the midfield, Cech reamins a huge concern going forward. There are some very interesting games ahead. I think ManU is in big trouble with Bayern coming in this week with Robben and Schweinstiger healthy. Meanwhile, Chelsea has the FA semi-final against Villa and I would expect Ancelotti to rest some players in that game in favor of protecting the 2 point lead in the premiership.

I don't understand why all of the youtube videos of Macheda's goal are so low quality and choppy, I found one that looks like it bounced off of his gut and then his right forearm but it is too low quality to confirm.

I'm still pretty mad about the missed call on the Drogba goal. I don't want to hear any of this evening up on the Macheda goal. Clearly the game is different being played 1-0 vs 2-0.

Chelsea certainly was the better side for much of the game - and to be frank, I can't believe Fergie's lineup for this one. I know he has a tendency to go with more defensive minded/veteran sides in big games.....and a draw would have been a sufficient result. But, you can't throw Scholes and Giggs out there without any threats on offense. Valencia had a good start to the campaign, but has been barely adequate since. Not having Nani out there was a mistake, he is a game changer. Sure he is not much on defense, but there was no need to worry about that, as you are already fielding Fletcher who is essentially a 5 fb, Scholes who rarely adds to the attack, but rather sits back. You could have afforded an aggressive midfield option on the flank opposite Valencia. In fact, I very much prefer the Nani/Evra overlaps down the left flank to the Valencia/NEville pairing. And why no Carrick?

United's in big trouble now in both CL play and EPL.

And, there have been a lot of poor/blown/missed calls of late and it's a bit frustrating. I can see the 50/50 calls being missed, but Drogba was huge miss. Klose similarly had a huge goal from a blown offside call. And Henry's handball? Come on, get the calls right. If need be, take your time to talk about it. Soccer needs to come with the times.

anywhoooo

I think BMaverick had a similar comment regarding the Drogba offside goal, but the 2 goal lead only lasted for 3 minutes before Macheda's handball goal, so I don't understand how its all that relevant. It was a terrible missed call, but I think the blown calls at least equaled out in this game. Fergie is obviously a brilliant guy, but his lineup and substitutions strike me as bizarre recently, especially the game in Munich.

The Song - Nasri - Walcott triumvirate (first time I've used that word on this board) will be key in the return leg against the blaugrana. Since they need to put in some goals, this is where they will come from.Song is critical in his holding MF role against Messi (who seemed to play pretty deep against Arsenal), Xavi, and whoever else is there with them in the attacking MF. He did well being the Messi shadow yesterday and disrupted their passing flow just enough.
Song is out. With Ibra out for Barca, Bojan should get the start. He got a brace this weekend.

Bojan has talent, I'll give you that. But Bilbao isn't in the same universe as Arsenal.Sad that Song is out for the Barça game. That all but eliminates them IMO. They are going to miss him tremendously, and I think that Messi will show his stuff in the return leg.

Without question - one of the few consistently strong performers in the Arsenal side, IMO. I can't rave enough about him.

 I didn't know that Song was out until now. That is the final straw. I know all teams go through spells with injuries, but Arsenal are now without Fabregas, Van Persie, Gallas, Song, Arshavin, Ramsey, and a few other secondary players. At least 5 of those guys and maybe all 6 would be in the first choice lineup against Barca if they were fit.

Man U looked toothless without Rooney.

RedStars 2-0 and on top of the East!!!! First away win (vs Seattle) in almost 2 years. They still don't look very good, but wtf.

Excited to see the Toon Army back in the Prem next year.
Yeah, they really kicked the #### out of the Championship, eh? 17 points clear of absolute promotion with 5 to play....
They were smart. While most teams that drop jettison their players (the did let Viduka and Owen go), they held onto a lot of experience. Butt, Barton, Smith, Coloccini, Enrique, Nolan, Taylor, Gutierrez, Ameobi--all guys who've played for their countries at some level.

I'll be cheering for Newcastle next year.
I like an underdog and all that, but they've been pretty dreary since Shearer retired.Cool that they've wrapped it up so early- by Christo regarding them keeping players rather than dumping them. Also very cool that all through Europe: La Liga, Serie A, Ligue 1, Bundesliga, EPL- titles are still there to be won or lost heading into the final games. 2 teams fighting in Spain and Germany, 3 teams in England and Italy and 6 (!) teams within 3 points of 1st in France. I've been watching Italy to see if Milan could challenge my Inter, but Roma kinda snuck back up there on me.

Grant Wahl just tweeted that three Frenchmen will be coming to MLS this season.

Henry first, followed by Pires and Vieira.

Are you guessing about the names?Henry's the better talent, but I'm hoping the BullMetros pick up one of the MFs to fill a desperate need. I like what I've seen of Lindpere, the Estonian, but he doesn't have a lot of help.
