For the two remaining Group C matches, there are no fewer than fifteen possible scenarios for the US, one of which involves a coin flip. God, I love this game.

IF PANAMA BEATS CANADA ...

- and the U.S. wins, the U.S. advances in second place.

- and the U.S. ties, the U.S. advances in second place.

- and the U.S. loses by one goal, the U.S. advances in second place.

- and the U.S. loses by two or three goals, the U.S. finishes in third place with three points*

- and the U.S. loses by four or more goals, the U.S. finishes in fourth place

IF PANAMA AND CANADA TIE ..

- and the U.S. wins, the U.S. advances in second place.

- and the U.S. ties, the U.S. advances in second place. (tiebreaker: head to head vs Canada)

- and the U.S. loses, the U.S. will finish in fourth place. (tiebreaker: head to head vs Guadeloupe)

IF CANADA BEATS PANAMA ...

- by one or two goals and the U.S. wins, the U.S. wins the group.

- 3-0 and the U.S. wins by one or more scoring at least 2, the U.S. will advance in first place.

- 3-0 and the U.S. wins 1-0, there will be a drawing of lots to determine first or second place.

- by three goals, scoring four or more, and the U.S. wins, the U.S. will advance in second place.

- by four goals and the U.S. wins, the U.S. advances in second place.

- and the U.S. ties, the U.S. will advance as a third-place team.

- and the U.S. loses, the U.S. will finish in fourth place.

THIRD PLACE SCENARIOS

* If the U.S. were to advance as a third-place team with three points, one of the following must happen:

- Guatemala-Grenada ends in a tie

- Grenada wins with a margin of victory that when added to the U.S. margin of defeat is less than 10

A couple of media members have predicted the following lineup for the US

Howard

Cherundolo, Goodson, Bocanegra, Bornstein

Donovan, Bradley, Edu, Bedoya

Dempsey, Altidore

I wanted to wait on throwing this out there to make sure it wasnt my homer goggles talking, but I believe that Sheanon Williams is the real deal and is a name to keep an eye on for later in this WC cycle and beyond at right back.

Just turned 21 in March, he is quickly developing into an all-star caliber player for the Union and is an unsung reason (next to Mondragon and Valdes) why they've emerged as one of the best teams in the league. Has the speed and touch to burn defenders down the right flank and also has a Rory Delap-esque long throw in that has led directly to some goals. As he fills out and matures I expect his defensive game to improve even more (it's already solid). Combine that with his speed and wing attacking skill and he'd be quite a weapon for the Nats in the future.

And of course, he's a RIGHT back. Assuming Chandler doesn't jump ship to the Germans, how does this kid compare to him?

Probably wouldn't compare him to Chandler at this point since Chandler is essentially doing the same thing but in the Bundesliga. Sheanon might have him on pace but i havent seen enough of Chandler to conclude. Then again, I'm not 100% convinced that Chandler ends up with the US. The whole Gold Cup roster change still seems really fishy to me.ETA: just noticed you qualified your question with the Germany factor

My area of the country produces very few players so Williams was identified very early. I remember Frank Dell'Apa wrote an article on him when he was around 15 for the Boston Globe. I certainly have not seen him play anywhere as much as Ted has but from what I have seen he has a lot of good traits to build on. Playing a lot in MLS is going to help him grow. He should factor in sometime late in this cycle. Whether he does or not will depend upon whether Cherundolo starts to feel his age and whether Chandler some how gets tied to the US.

Not a huge Bornsetin fan but it's not like we have another amazing option...at least he's well rested.Other than that, I like it a lot...I'd like it even more with Holden/Chandler/Davies but these are the cards we've been dealt. The more I see of Goodson, the more I like him...very active for a center back and he is rarely beaten despite his height.

Guat won 4-0. This puts them in the quarters. Still to be determined if they come in second in group or grab one of the third place teams.

The next game has a strong likelihood of containing who the US plays next in Jamaica vs Honduras

I'm baaaaaack. After a 2+ week absence from the FFA soccer thread (and no soccer watching at all) due to a nice long vacation to Hawaii, I'm back to join you fools.

So what they hell happened to the US vs. Panama? Also, I see none of the 3 transfer targeted Atleti players have officially left yet (Kun, Forlán, and De Gea).

Welcome back!!We missed your comments on how well Mexico is playing. You have been predicting this for a while and they look to be hitting on all cylinders.

I haven´t watched a single minute of the Gold Cup. I didn't really have internet access and since i was in Hawaii I found other forms of entertainment.

Mexico is the real deal. Talent all over the pitch. What's up with the doping that I heard about though?

5 Mexican players were suspended for failing a test back in May.

Group B is complete.

Jamaica is the only team in the tournament not to be scored on after winning their 3rd straight tonight with a 1-0 win over Honduras.

Honduras gets second and Guat advances as one of the two 3rd place teams.

If US comes in first they will play Guat.

If US comes in second they will play Jamaica.

If US come in 3rd they will play Mexico.

If US comes in 4th they will be out.

Being how many of you are younger and significantly more in touch than I am, I wanted to pose a question to you.

Many moons ago(15 years or so) a high ranking US Soccer employee was interviewed and asked about the lack of American based Latin support for the national team. He responded in two pieces

1) He never expects in anyone's lifetime for the Latin fans to support the US over their own country of birth

2) He was very hopeful that eventually the Latin fans would choose the US as their #2 team and root for them as long as they were not playing their own country.

I always agreed with #1. I don't see that ever changing. Fathers will teach sons and the cycle will continue for a long long time. I did hope that #2 would come true. I figured the longer time went by the more and more Latin fans would be born in the US and might instinctively choose the US as a second team to root for.

What do you guys think of these two answers? I can't say that in the 15 years since he made these comments, that answer 2 is coming to fruition. Could this be that we just need more time or is the whole idea unrealistic?

By the way, the Jamaican goal last night was one of those rare own goals on the Honduran keeper. Ryan Johnson for Jamaica hit a bomb from about 20 yards out the flew past the diving keeper, smashed off the cross bar, angled down on the rebound and hit the keeper and went in the net. Might be the nicest own goal I have seen in a while :)

I have 2 Salvadoran friends which were born outside the US. Both are hard core US fans and will be attending the Gold Cup final with me (hopefully the USA doesn't choke and it's USA / Mexico). I have another Mexican-American friend whose father, brother, and cousins all support El Tri. He however pulls for the US over el Tri.I think it really comes down to how americanized the person in question is. The first two guys left El Salvador at a young, young age, so all they know is the US. Both are college educated. The 3rd example was born here, but is more americanized than his brother/father/cousins. He is not college educated. Then you have my wife. She pulls for the US unless I'm around (or they are playing Venezuela). If I'm around she likes to mess with me by cheering the other side...The blending of cultures lies at the root of this. The more integrated that the person feels in the US, the more likely they are to support the USMNT over other countries, even that of their "native" country. That will only increase through time as there are more and more second, third, and fourth generation latinos in the US that have only a cursory understanding of the country of their heritage.

The Montreal Impact announced a 5 year sponsorship for BMO to be on their jersey's starting next season

BMO must really like soccer. They are already on Toronto FC's jersey and are the title sponsor to Toronto's stadium.

Well if for nothing else at least I am really looking forward to this game tonight. I originally thought this game would be more experimental but now it has taken on new meaning.

Multiple media members are saying that if the US find a way to lose this game, Bradley will get fired.

Silver Lining Alert

BTW, are any of you fools in Baltimore or DC? Where's the place to watch footy over there.

I'm moving from Oakland in July. Eephus, you better step up if you want to meet the Z before he goes...

Make sure to watch The Wire, and then call me when you decide to do a big-boy move to a real city.

I've probably been one of Bradley's only fans around here (and most places)- but if the US finds a way to lose this game against an outmatched and outfitnessed minnow, put his head on freaking pike.

DC has several soccer bars. Lucky Bar in Dupont Circle is one of the more prominent ones. Summers Bar and Grill in Arlington, VA is also popular. I know nothing about Baltimore bars, but I assume they have them.

regarding the lineup tonight... it's funny, I've been a Goodson fan since he first came up with the USMNT. But maybe I've gotten used to the positive things Ream can do with the ball (as opposed to his shambolic ability to make one or two crucial mistakes per game) and I've been really bothered by Goodson's poor distribution so far at the GC. He's making a lot of piss-poor passes and decisions out of the back that immediately puts his defensive counterparts in trouble. I don't remember him being this bad with the ball previously- or maybe I've just been spoiled by the quality Ream has brought.

I saw all 5 seasons... I'm planning to re-watch while I'm there and unemployed.
If you've seen the entire thing, there's no reason to be unemployed.

Please tell me when you'll be in one of said bars. I WILL be there.

I'm hoping to re-up on some Pandemic.

Anyone watching the Panama Canada game? Canada just missed a good chance early in the game.

Stadium is pretty empty right now which is good since it is sold out and likely means a strong US crowd. This stadium might prove to be an excellent site for any non Mexican qualifier for the US.

I spend about one week out of five in Maryland for business. The Bay Area is nicer.

From US Soccer tweet

Six USMNT players have a yellow card. A yellow tonight and they miss the quarters: Altidore, Bedoya, Bocanegra, Bradley, Goodson, Jones.

SJ Earthquakes is tweeting that Wando is in starting lineup tonight. Still waiting on full lineup. Was due 15 minutes ago.

awesome classic FA cup match on FSN before the game

Man U v Liverpool in 99.

I forget just how fast Giggs was. Owen was no slouch either.
