Not quite - if Panama beats Canada, the US could lose by one goal and still finish second in the group on tiebreakers. If Guat wins by any amount, the US will be eliminated with a loss in their last game.

Right! Thank you for the correction. I was fixated on one of the two third place teams and forgot that US could still get second with a loss. Not quite - if Panama beats Canada, the US could lose by one goal and still finish second in the group on tiebreakers. If Guat wins by any amount, the US will be eliminated with a loss in their last game.

THIRD PLACE SCENARIOS
* If the U.S. were to advance as a third-place team with three points, one of the following must happen:
- Guatemala-Grenada ends in a tie
- Grenada wins with a margin of victory that when added to the U.S. margin of defeat is less than 10
And of course, he's a RIGHT back. Assuming Chandler doesn't jump ship to the Germans, how does this kid compare to him?I wanted to wait on throwing this out there to make sure it wasnt my homer goggles talking, but I believe that Sheanon Williams is the real deal and is a name to keep an eye on for later in this WC cycle and beyond at right back. Just turned 21 in March, he is quickly developing into an all-star caliber player for the Union and is an unsung reason (next to Mondragon and Valdes) why they've emerged as one of the best teams in the league. Has the speed and touch to burn defenders down the right flank and also has a Rory Delap-esque long throw in that has led directly to some goals. As he fills out and matures I expect his defensive game to improve even more (it's already solid). Combine that with his speed and wing attacking skill and he'd be quite a weapon for the Nats in the future.
Probably wouldn't compare him to Chandler at this point since Chandler is essentially doing the same thing but in the Bundesliga. Sheanon might have him on pace but i havent seen enough of Chandler to conclude. Then again, I'm not 100% convinced that Chandler ends up with the US. The whole Gold Cup roster change still seems really fishy to me.ETA: just noticed you qualified your question with the Germany factorAnd of course, he's a RIGHT back. My area of the country produces very few players so Williams was identified very early. I remember Frank Dell'Apa wrote an article on him when he was around 15 for the Boston Globe. I certainly have not seen him play anywhere as much as Ted has but from what I have seen he has a lot of good traits to build on. Playing a lot in MLS is going to help him grow. He should factor in sometime late in this cycle. Whether he does or not will depend upon whether Cherundolo starts to feel his age and whether Chandler some how gets tied to the US.I wanted to wait on throwing this out there to make sure it wasnt my homer goggles talking, but I believe that Sheanon Williams is the real deal and is a name to keep an eye on for later in this WC cycle and beyond at right back. Not a huge Bornsetin fan but it's not like we have another amazing option...at least he's well rested.Other than that, I like it a lot...I'd like it even more with Holden/Chandler/Davies but these are the cards we've been dealt. The more I see of Goodson, the more I like him...very active for a center back and he is rarely beaten despite his height.'NewlyRetired said:A couple of media members have predicted the following lineup for the USHowardCherundolo, Goodson, Bocanegra, BornsteinDonovan, Bradley, Edu, BedoyaDempsey, Altidore
Welcome back!!We missed your comments on how well Mexico is playing. You have been predicting this for a while and they look to be hitting on all cylinders.I'm baaaaaack. After a 2+ week absence from the FFA soccer thread (and no soccer watching at all) due to a nice long vacation to Hawaii, I'm back to join you fools. So what they hell happened to the US vs. Panama? Also, I see none of the 3 transfer targeted Atleti players have officially left yet (Kun, Forlán, and De Gea).
5 Mexican players were suspended for failing a test back in May.I haven´t watched a single minute of the Gold Cup. I didn't really have internet access and since i was in Hawaii I found other forms of entertainment.Mexico is the real deal. Talent all over the pitch. What's up with the doping that I heard about though?
But can he play left back?I know Sunil is not everyone's favorite guy on here but this article is by far the most in depth look at the man who the article claims (and pretty much proves) has done more for US Soccer than anyone in history. http://espn.go.com/sports/soccer/news/_/id/6354897/sunil-gulati-most-important-man-us-soccer
I have 2 Salvadoran friends which were born outside the US. Both are hard core US fans and will be attending the Gold Cup final with me (hopefully the USA doesn't choke and it's USA / Mexico). I have another Mexican-American friend whose father, brother, and cousins all support El Tri. He however pulls for the US over el Tri.I think it really comes down to how americanized the person in question is. The first two guys left El Salvador at a young, young age, so all they know is the US. Both are college educated. The 3rd example was born here, but is more americanized than his brother/father/cousins. He is not college educated. Then you have my wife. She pulls for the US unless I'm around (or they are playing Venezuela). If I'm around she likes to mess with me by cheering the other side...The blending of cultures lies at the root of this. The more integrated that the person feels in the US, the more likely they are to support the USMNT over other countries, even that of their "native" country. That will only increase through time as there are more and more second, third, and fourth generation latinos in the US that have only a cursory understanding of the country of their heritage.Being how many of you are younger and significantly more in touch than I am, I wanted to pose a question to you. Many moons ago(15 years or so) a high ranking US Soccer employee was interviewed and asked about the lack of American based Latin support for the national team. He responded in two pieces1) He never expects in anyone's lifetime for the Latin fans to support the US over their own country of birth2) He was very hopeful that eventually the Latin fans would choose the US as their #2 team and root for them as long as they were not playing their own country. I always agreed with #1. I don't see that ever changing. Fathers will teach sons and the cycle will continue for a long long time. I did hope that #2 would come true. I figured the longer time went by the more and more Latin fans would be born in the US and might instinctively choose the US as a second team to root for. What do you guys think of these two answers? I can't say that in the 15 years since he made these comments, that answer 2 is coming to fruition. Could this be that we just need more time or is the whole idea unrealistic?
Silver Lining AlertWell if for nothing else at least I am really looking forward to this game tonight. I originally thought this game would be more experimental but now it has taken on new meaning.
Multiple media members are saying that if the US find a way to lose this game, Bradley will get fired.
Make sure to watch The Wire, and then call me when you decide to do a big-boy move to a real city.BTW, are any of you fools in Baltimore or DC? Where's the place to watch footy over there.I'm moving from Oakland in July. Eephus, you better step up if you want to meet the Z before he goes...
I've probably been one of Bradley's only fans around here (and most places)- but if the US finds a way to lose this game against an outmatched and outfitnessed minnow, put his head on freaking pike.Well if for nothing else at least I am really looking forward to this game tonight. DC has several soccer bars. Lucky Bar in Dupont Circle is one of the more prominent ones. Summers Bar and Grill in Arlington, VA is also popular. I know nothing about Baltimore bars, but I assume they have them.BTW, are any of you fools in Baltimore or DC? Where's the place to watch footy over there.I'm moving from Oakland in July. That PK made me shudder a little bit. Even in that win over Canada, the US didn't give me a whole lot to feel confident about.1-0 to Canada
