Wow. Aguero looks unbelievably hungry. Subbed in during second half and already has 2 goals and an assist in 30 minutes

Man City looks loaded. Can't wait to see them play a decent side.

LA is in a very good position right now to make some noise or have an epic fail.

1) They are the best team in MLS right now (points)

2) The weakest position on the field was a true striker

3) They just signed 31 year old Robbie Keane

LA is in prime position to win the Supporters Shield and the automatic invite to next years Champions League competition

LA is starting group play in CCL this week

MLS Cup is at the HDC this year and I am sure they would love to play at home

fwiw- I'm nowhere near as sold on recent Keane as andy. I feel like he's underwhelmed in the wrongest possible ways (for MLS's sake) over the last couple of seasons- primarily, laziness.

Loved the guy before his Liverpool move for his hustle, heart and nose for gaol, but since then he's seemed a step off and step disinterested.

the move I actually liked this week is for a guy I previously expressed wub for- Aubray (Guadeloupe international) was traded to my StarReds for a 2nd rounder (IIRC) next year.

I've been genuinely suprsied by how poorly they've played since acquiring Dax McCarty- I figured he'd be the missing link for them in the center of MF as a bonafide two-way player with experience and decent skills. But something hasn't clicked and he's just not getting as involved as I (and probably he) would like. Aubray is a genuine #10 who is capable of dictating games with his style/presence, constantly demanding the ball and getting his team-mates flowing- and hopefully get his forwards better involved.

re: Klinsman...

I'm not sure he's going to get the team any more "disciplined" than BB, who despite his faults, certainly brought discipline in the team's approach.

I do agree that the team should be given a bit more room to attack from every position, based on his comments- but isn't that really an approach that might bring less disclipline to the team (or at least it's shape)?

I'll admit- I was a mild supporter of BB, and think he's been given a very bum rap by fans and the press. I've stated my appreciation for his tactics both formation and personnel-wise. My main objection to the coach he's become* is that the US routinely gives up early goals- a couple of times here and there and it's a fluke... practically every game and somebody is doing a poor job getting that team ready to step out onto the field. I'm hoping Klinsmann's professional history as a player provides that game-day readiness.

But bottom line- if Klinsmann can win as many games as BB, things will be just fine. If he can do so and push the team into a new, more interesting/attractive/flowing attacking style... all the better. And absolute nadir line- he needs to qualify for the WC. Once there, for any kind of legacy, he needs to lead them into the final 8 (barring a first knock-out round matchup with Spain or whoever is killing it in '14).

*- (he previously stuck too long to certain formatons or players... that damn 4-5-1... when it seemed clear it wasn't working- but he's seemed to have grown by making moves faster and switching things around more easily)

re: EPL...

I agree with those who said Man United didn't look that threatening. But I feel like I've been saying that every year for years now... and they still keep winning. The 80+ minute winner is their M.O. and seems almost inevitable at this point, regardless of whether they're the "better" team on the day or not. ONe thing- they looked like they could use Sneijder. And Sir Al must have been feeling  after watching Vidic and Rio both pull up gimpy.

Loved how Swansea played today- of course they were doomed to lose away to City, but they knocked it around nicely. Not enough class to make it translate against the better teams probably, but they should be a tough game against the bottom half... at least until the first round of injuries forces them to bring out their scrubs.

I completely missed that Nasri went to... City? Is that right? Arsenal looked like a taem that needed a couple of quality MFs. Too bad- I genuinely enjoy watching them play and was hoping this would finally be the year this group can turn the corner into more success. Not likely now, although I would never bet against Wenger.

And Kun... wow. I watched the first 20 or so minutes of that game and you could feel the rising tension of the fans as they watched a pretty miserable, disinterested display from their home-team. But Kun just destroyed it- looked like a man amongst boys out there, holding players off at will and routinely beating them to the ball (and finding open team-mates). I never got to see this kind of performance from him for AM or Argentina- but I also never got to see a lot of him or those teams.

So I told my dear wife (who is one week from popping out our second son) that all I wanted for my birthday tomorrow was the chance to go to a soccer pub in the morning and watch the Liverpool match in complete peace, away from the wanton destruction of our two year old. You can imagine her response.

I'll be in this thread tomorrow morning if any Sunderland fans want to talk smack.
:hi:I don't think it's too late to do something about this. AVOID.

that is all.

Finally settling in to watch the game after work, Breaking Bad, and UFC. Interesting lineup. Showcasing the depth even before Cesc gets there. God I hope Barca wins this.
Guess that was more of a desperation play than a showcase. This game emphasized Barca need for bolstering the central D and the need for not messing with the midfield too much. Can't believe they had $40+ mil to spend and used it on a midfielder instead of a defender.
Agreed. While I was hoping to see Barca whip Madrid, part of me thought that if Madrid scored 3 or 4 that perhaps it would wake up the management to the fact they need another defender, which wouldn't be a bad thing. Still wondering why they have been so hell-bent on Cesc this off-season when Thiago seems capable of spelling Xavi this season in the Copa del Rey and against lesser teams in La Liga.
Barca has to know that Barca's biggest weakness is the back line. My theory/guess is that there just simply aren't any defenders who are available right now, and that they're waiting until the winter to add defense. In the meantime, they've got midfield taken care of not only for this year (obviously), but theoretically they won't have to spend much (if at all) on midfield for many years.

Now that we've made it through fantasy football draft weekend, I told her she was free to give birth. Then she threatened to kill me.I'm really disappointed in Saturday's result, but Liverpool looked pretty good for the parts of the game I was able to watch.

This team is going to be interesting as hell to watch all season long. At this point I feel like they could field a "b" team that would finish fourth or fifth. Barry, Johnson, Milner...multiple players are going to be disappointed with their pt.
They are going to have a lot of players wanting to leave. Most of their bench could start on other big teams. It's a nice problem to have, but it shows how weak their youth program is. A lot of those spaces should be filled with up and coming players who can contribute without feeling slighted when they don't start.

I am neither sold nor discouraged. I think he will be better for LA than JPA who hit the wall hard this year. How much better is anyone's guess. I think it is an interesting signing and certainly has created some good buzz for the fans which is never a bad thing. As I said, LA has numerous goals in the immediate pipeline. It has the chance to be an epic fail, especially if the transfer fee and salary rumors are true.

btw- anybody else looking forward to seeing what's the next stop on the Balotelli crazy-train?
Balotelli at 30
2014 – Successive promotions with FC United of Manchester see Balotelli appointed Mayor of Manchester on a 5 year deal. Disbands Manchester City FC and moves every tramp in Manchester to new, plush, free accommodation at the newly renovated Eastlands Hotel. Teaches them individually how to read and write Italian and English. Sacked after executing the city’s parking attendants.

Birthday Present – A towel (recession)

New Allergy – Darts

I just realized why I never got British humor. It isn't funny.

I hate to admit this. But it's just a little too soon for me to get excited about Champions League action.

I'm still going to watch the Gunners though.

Read a good Twitter stat. In 49 games, neither the US National team or any MLS team has ever won a game in Mexico. 44 losses and 5 draws

Dallas will be going into the lions den tomorrow at Pumas to try and do what no other team from the US has done.

Eddie Johnson has signed with MLS. He will be allocated.

Top of Allocation list is Chivas USA who have already skipped Fielhaber and Adu.

This is an excellent rule change for MLS. Will allow them to grab more young talent from South America. This should make Ted very happy. With Adu's age, this frees up some cap room to provide some depth to the squad next season.

The new MLS DP rule amendment reduces salary cap figure for young Designated Players. Young DP (20 or less) will count 150K, 21-23 count 200K

As expected, the transfer fee paid 4 Robbie Keane to Tottenham is tied into the Keane salary figure, which is how you get 2 years, 9 million

What other examples are there of players whose scoring has sky rocketed after they have turned 30?

Antonio Di Natale's last two seasons are incredible at an age you don't normally see players improve.

Can't see the game, but The Guardian is ripping Arsenal apart. Is it that bad?

Also, I will need an update on how Jenkinson looks...sounds like he's about to come in.

74 mins Yeah. So Frimpong makes an immediate difference by giving away a free kick 30 yards out. Di Natale curls it beautifully and Scab-Knees pulls off a very athletic save diving to his left and palming well clear. Mark Taylor shares this: "Around 2001 I worked a summer pulling shifts in a food factory in north Wales, and there was a bloke on the line who claimed to be Ray Parlour's cousin "I get tickets to all the games", anyway, one day an older chap called Stenno, who did not believe our man, turned to me and said "Ray Parlour? More like fuggin' Alf Parlour, heh heh" to this day I remember the exchange clear as day and still have absolutely no clue who Alf Parlour is, or whether I should know who he is." He should have said "front parlour" maybe? Something like that?
:lmao:

Arsenal are playing fine. Let's face it they are not a dominant side and Udinese is a very underrated team.
Agreed. Arsenal wasn't spectacular but they looked fine. The Guardian will always take a bunch of needless jabs at the English teams. It's what they do.

I know, but they're usually pretty brutally honest about it. From the way he was reporting the first 30 minutes or so of the second half, it sounded like Arsenal is going to be battling relegation this year...

Granted I missed the first 30 minutes or so of the second half, so maybe it was bad. The first half was decent and Walcott should've added a second goal at the end there.

Lyon v Rubin was an entertaining match. Bastos was easily the best player and flashed numerous times with tremendous crosses into the penalty area playing on both midfield flanks and also at left back. The Rubin goalie was a mess and the funny thing is that out of the three goals, only one could possibly be blamed on him and even that one was an in the area short cross that deflected into the net.

Funny that no official announcement has been made as Angel just tweeted that he has completed his first practice with Chivas USA

Watched the City/Swansea game earlier today.

I get the feeling Swansea is going to have a really, really, really, really, really, really, really hard time in the Premiership. Not even a solid goalie can save you when you're getting barraged to death by shots from superior squads.

They have 37 more games to get to 40 points. Not all Premiership teams are as strong as MCFC; they only have to beat three teams, not nineteen. Home form will be critical for the Swans. They got 50 of their 80 points at home last year, leading the Championship in that category. If they can hold their own at The Liberty, they can beat the drop. The bottom of the table will be more competitive than the top again this season.

Both MLS teams won their CCL openers. Both games were at home.

Seattle won 4-1 (after going down 1-0 early, and at 1-1 Seattle went down to 10 men and proceeded to blow them out)

LA won 2-0, but it was complete domination on the Gals part as they created chance after chance with poor finishing. Would have been a great game to have seen what Keane could have done but that will have to wait.

Colorado and Dallas go tomorrow.

Good point, but before the game, I saw the graphic where Swan's starting 11 is valued at a measly $12.1 mil. I know they have some talented (and downright loyal) players on their team, but is it going to be enough to not just tread water with the power teams, but even the Boltons, Fultons and Villas of the league?

I think they will be a fun watch at home. The speed on the flanks is a strength especially with Sinclair. The story of the one guy who has been on the team all the way on the climb up four levels is great.

If the financial fair play does not have teeth, I could see Russia's league continue to grow and get better as the money they have at their disposal now is immense.

=========================================================

MILAN (AP) -- Inter Milan president Massimo Moratti is hoping to sell standout striker Samuel Eto'o to Russian club Anzhi Makhachkala because the offer is just too good to turn down, and it coincides with new financial fair play standards being introduced by UEFA.

Anzhi is reportedly prepared to pay Inter between €20 and €30 million ($29 and $43 million) for the 30-year-old Eto'o and give the Cameroon international a three-year contract worth €20 million ($29 million) net per season.

"When an offer like that comes around, it's difficult to match or refuse,'' Moratti told Wednesday's Gazzetta dello Sport.

Anzhi officials were in Milan for meetings with Eto'o's agent and Inter on Wednesday, the Gazzetta and the ANSA news agency reported. Eto'o will reportedly undergo medical exams for Anzhi in Rome some time over the next few days, after which the deal will be completed.

Moratti added that UEFA's new financial rules have forced clubs to evaluate their budgets and spending more closely.

This season's club accounts are the first ones that formally have to be given to UEFA for inspection - by June, 2013.

"Financial fair play is serious,'' Moratti said. "Whoever doesn't respect the parameters will find themselves excluded from European competition.''

Anzhi, from the troubled southern Russian province of Dagestan, is owned by billionaire businessman Suleiman Kerimov.

Inter is eyeing Diego Forlan of Atletico Madrid or Ezequiel Lavezzi of Napoli as a replacement for Eto'o, with Moratti saying he doesn't expect a deal with Manchester City for Carlos Tevez.

Meanwhile, playmaker Wesley Sneijder appears set to remain at Inter.

"There was never any sort of deal for Wes,'' Moratti said. "If Eto'o goes he stays, but seeing as Sneijder was untouchable even before this possibility, he's even more so now.''

Arsenal was ok. I think the pairing of Vermaelen and Koscielny is going to work out well. Vermaelen was the best defender of the group as you might expect. Koscielny was solid with a few minor gaffes. The part that worries me is as usual, the lack of depth at the back. Gibbs went out with a hamstring injury and Djourou came on and immediately injured his hamstring. Jenkinson looked a bit lost at times but he did battle. As for the midfield, Ramsey played very well in my opinion. It is good to see him getting his stride back and he along with Walcott, provided the best scoring opportunities of the day. Gervinho had some impressive play, but he also gave the ball away too easily at times. And it seems that he has already caught the Arsenal bug of not shooting the ball and instead looking for the perfect pass. Song was solid as usual. Rosicky played well early but seemed to tire as the game drew on. He is not 21 any longer. I have not seen enough of Frimpong to form an opinion yet.Chamakh was a non-factor. I wonder what happened to the player that impressed so much at the beginning of last season.

hits keep coming for the gunners with song and gervinho out for 3 matches now? Fabregas gone, Nasri surely soon to be gone.

The more I think about it, the more terrible I thought Arsenal was against Udinese. They were at home and the Italians historically play pretty poorly in England, and Udinese is not that good of a club - they lost probably their best player in the offseason, and will probably be mid-table this year, I have them no higher than 5th, and probably 6th-10th would be about right. Udinese was the better side for much of that match.

Gonna be a long season at the emirates.

Couple games today, gonna try to catch BM play.
