Interesting indeed RT @Marcotti: First time since 06-07 that MUFC win their first two PL matches...

thoughts on the pk called against the union by non-union soccer fans?
I don't know what the letter of the law is in that case but there was no intent by the Union defender. The ball seemed to be driven into his chest where his arm was. It did hit his arm but even if his arm was cut off it still hits his chest so there was no advantage gained IMO.
well, since they could have called a second PK later in the game against the union, i guess i won't complain too loudly.

Feel bad for Macheda. He's buried. I really like his game, but he's never gonna play (especially if Welbeck keeps this up) And after coming back from that broken leg late last year, and doing very well, it doesn't look like Valencia is gonna get any burn either.

If I were Michael Owen, I would get the hell out of there. Would probably be a good fit over here in MLS.

De Gea really just looks brutally bad. He's athletic, but he's weak and in over his head at the moment.

Spurs are an eye exam for Aaron Lennon away from being ahead in this thing. How did he not see Van der Vaart there?
Tottenham looked really good up until about this point. Man U just crushing them for the last 25 minutes or so.
I wish I would've cut off the match at that point. Depressing after that. 3-0 and knowing Modric is all but gone and being told Crouch might not be too far behind. Not fun to watch after following the team all last season. The push towards Liverpool will probably ramp up a bit for me as a new EPL fan. We'll see, I guess.Hoping for Bayern to advance. My back-up CL team is probably Man City if they don't get through.

It's too bad about Modric, but they are going to get a good price for him and likely bring in Adebayor, Benayoun, Diarra, and Parker. Oddly enough I think that team will be better than the one last year.United are the champs and they play much better home than away. I don't really see why anyone would be jumping ship after that game. Spurs were forced to open it up after the first goal and blew their couple of chances. Up to that point it was a pretty good game.

I'm new. Am I required to form a complete bond in one year? Seriously have never watched one EPL game prior to August of last year.

Bayern has huge incentive to focus on the CL this year, as they are hosting the final at Allianz Arena next May.

I'm not gone yet. Bale was the first one on the team who peaked my interest, coupled with the CL performance, most certainly. I'm working with no base here. charvik suggested Liverpool last seasion when I started watching, but Tottenham was more fun to follow at the time.Heck, it's not like I said, "I'm a Machester United fan" all of the sudden. I'm still trying to find my way. I figure I'll follow both for a while, but as of right now, I get a little more excited about Spurs wins/goals and upset about losses than I do with Liverpool, if that means anything.

I don't think its possible to choose your team. Just keep watching games, reading, and try to get to a game sometime, and sooner or later your team will pick you.

There's really no other choice if you want your team to possibly win anything, except Liverpool. Choosing Man Utd, Chelsea, or Man City (now) is like picking the Yankees or Red Sox. Aston Villa would have been a good choice at one time, but they seem to be going down instead of up.

Looking forward to some of the CONCACAF Champions league games this week...also ManU/Arsenal this Sunday will be some awesomeness.

Arsenal's beset with all sorts or defections/injuries/suspensions, and they've got a massive game midweek @ Udinese to get into the Champions League (they won 1-0 at home last week), as well as a huge decision to play Nasri in that game and possibly kill his transfer value by Cup-tying him, or finally letting him go to Man City. Their fanbase is also pretty discontent with this past summer and Wenger's lack of activity.Granted, ManU has injuries on their back line and DeGea is very much a work in progress (clean sheet today, but an ugly one), but they still rolled a pretty good Spurs team. And Hernandez is probably going to be back. Lots of talent on display, but I Arsenal winning it would be a fairly surprising upset, and I don't think they have much of a prayer of getting past ManU/ManCity/Chelsea/Liverpool to get into the Top 4 this year.

I'm more looking forward to the City at Tottenham game that precedes that one. Spurs being at home helps, and they seem to be in slightly less chaos than Arsenal.

I've decided my top three MLS teams are...

1. San Jose - yes, they suck, but they're my first "hometown" MLS team so I'm going with it

2. Philadelphia - mostly because I'm a Freddy Adu fanboy

3. Galaxy - Used to live in LA...they are West Coast

Three teams I like to root against

1. The Red Bulls - New Yorkers are annoying

2. Salt Lake - I root against all things Utah

3. New England - Boston fans are ultra annoying now that they've had a good stretch in other sports

Newbie comment: Have only watched a handful of EPL games so far, and last night was the first time I have gotten to see ManU (and the Spurs for that matter). I don't plan on rooting for ManU, but I will be watching as many of their games as possible. Damn, that was some pretty soccer yesterday. I can see why they are who they are.

Can you call it pretty soccer?

I believe they call it the 'Beautiful Game'. :-)

Modric refuses to play. Or, he doesn't.

Time to sell I guess. It's ridiculous how contracts are worth nothing in the Euro leagues. That's one thing that can really turn a person off from watching.
Yeah, that never happens in American sports.
Yeah, his post was ironic considering he made it on an American football message board :)
I'm pretty sure I've never seen a team in the NFL badger another team until they give up a player who just signed a fiver year contract while the player pouts and moans and refuses to play. But hey, I could be wrong.

Comolli> Sign the deal, but just change the name to Joe Cole
Sucks that 'Pool can't even give away Cole.
The issue is Cole's salary which is around $7.5M. Liverpool is going to have to pay a good chunk of it if they really want him out of Anfield.
Have the same problem in Football Manager. Always agree a fee for him, and then he balks at going down to a lower salary, or wants a weekly wage to move. It's maddening.

Not like it happens in European soccer. Any player that hands in a transfer request is pretty much going to get a transfer. I believe it has to do with EU laws being heavily weighted to the players.

I wouldn't say "any player". As with US athletes, the superstars can usually get what they want. In Modric's case, Harry Redknap stated today that he could triple his income with a move to Chelsea. That situation would create a holdout for any athlete in any sport.

Suffice it to say the transfer system in international soccer is very different from American sports. I've always found it ironic that the US, which prides itself on a history of laissez-faire Capitalism, has a player acquisition process with compensation picks, inverted amateur drafts, etc. Europe even with its Socialist traditions practices a much more cutthroat money based transfer system.

You have never seen a player hold out in the NFL?

Over/under on the number of unflattering Arsene Wenger pictures to appear in the English papers this week = 100SkySports News ran footage of him picking his nose yesterday. I realize he's French and has a vast array of hangdog facial expressions, but the press seems to be going out of their way to kick him while he's down.

Nasri to Citeh, per Arsenal statement.http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/sport/football/3769451/Arsenal-accept-24m-bid-for-Samir-Nasri-from-Manchester-City.htmlFrimpong weighs in on Twitter:

Not surprising at all. Most Americans (while capitalists at heart) believe in an even playing field when it comes to sports. It goes back to the playground where kids pick their own teams. Two captains (usually the guys who are recognized as the best two players--or sometimes it's inverted and the two scrubs get to be captains) make alternate choices until all of the players are divied up.

Lahm: Klinsmann doesn't do tactics

August 23, 2011

By ESPNsoccernet staff

Bayern Munich defender Philipp Lahm has hit out at former coach Jurgen Klinsmann, claiming that he left it up to players to sort out tactics.

Klinsmann, 47, took over at Bayern in 2008, two years after leaving his role with German national side having taken them to the semi-finals of the 2006 World Cup. The former striker did not enjoy success in the Bundesliga though and was sacked with five games still to be played, as Wolfsburg went on to claim the title.

Now, Lahm has revealed in a serialisation of his autobiography 'Der feine Unterschied - Wie man heute Spitzenfussballer wird' [The fine line - How to become a top professional] which goes on sale next week, that Klinsmann's style of management was unusual.

"The experiment with Klinsmann was a failure. We were only working on our fitness in training. He didn't care much for tactical stuff," he wrote. "It was up to the players to come together before a match and discuss how we were going to play.

''All the players knew after about eight weeks that it was not going to work out with Klinsmann. The remainder of that campaign was nothing but limiting the damage."

Klinsmann was recently announced as new coach of the USA national team, taking over from Bob Bradley.

Hopefully one of the assistant coaches will have a clue about tactics.
