Amazing that if United don't win at BASEL they are out. They really should win, but United has been playing so poorly in the CL I think it will be pretty close. Even if they win there is still a decent chance they draw second in the group.Tough break for City to get drawn into that group. I don't think I have ever seen a tougher group.
MCFC should be doing better. They're spent a ton of cash; more than even Bayern. City is leading a domestic league that claims to be the best in the world. Villareal is in the bottom half of La Liga. Napoli's record acquisition was Gokhan Inler €13M. City has squad players who cost more than that.
Dzeko and Balotellia are talented but very streaky players. Unless there was an injury concern, I think it was a huge mistake not to start El Kun, or at least to wait for the last 10 minutes to introduce him. Aguero and Silva working together is what stirs the sky blue drink.

I don't understand.United is in second right now with 9 points and Basel is in 3rd with 8 points with one game left for each team.

I think United only needs a draw to advance as the second team in the group.

What am I missing here?
You are missing the love that is seeing United fail.....A draw vs Basel sees them thru. A win and either a Benfica draw or loss and they are the top of the group. A loss sees them go home unless Benfica loses and then I believe its goal differential? In any case, win or draw and United moves on.

Another poor United effort. Rio is DONE. He has lost more then a step and just cant keep up any longer. Love him, but its time. Unfortunate OG by Jones to start the game. United have looked poor since Cleverly went down. They need to do something in the center mid. Rooney needs to get back up front (not sure why he didnt play today).

All in all congrats to Benfica, always a tough game for United (MU got knocked out in the quarters by Benfica 2 years ago i believe) and an underrated team.

Bayern advance to the next round with a 3-1 victory over Villarreal with two goals by Ribery and one by Gomez!
What are the odds they put a top squad out to knock out City?
Doesnt matter what City does, if Villareal cant at least tie Napoli, its over for MCFC. Gonna have to settle for the premier league title.
I understand. Still want them to go out on a losing note  This might be the best thing for them, too. Or at least for Mancini. He can't manage on three or four fronts

don't see this at all. This team is incredibly deep and it could easily mix and match to go deep in all four competitions. Champions League is not the one you throw either. Mancini's lineups have been inexplicable at times. He starts Kun over the weekend and then sits him now? I get that they want to win them all, but you are in a do or die situation in CL this week. You have to put your best lineup out there.

and like I said, MANCINI can't do it. This team is built for it, he'll screw it up

[MLS] Fans and players had hoped otherwise, but rather than install a grass surface at CenturyLink Field, the Sounders and NFL Seahawks have again opted for FieldTurf. The teams announced Tuesday that the latest version of FieldTurf will be installed next February. It replaces a surface laid in 2008 that had deteriorated considerably in the past two seasons."The new field will offer the field maintenance crew an outstanding and extremely durable product to meet the requirements of each event," said Sounders and Seahawks president Peter McLoughlin in a press release. In addition to  NFL and MLS games, CenturyLink Field will also host University of Washington football games for another season while Husky Stadium is being renovated.Heavy field usage is one reason grass will not be installed. Next weekend, for example, there will be college and pro games on back-to-back days, followed by another NFL game the following Thursday. In addition to at least 20 soccer games and more than a dozen football games played there annually, CenturyLink Field is also used for concerts and other events."We are looking forward to the installation of our new field for 2012 and beyond," said Sounders general manager Adrian Hanauer. "FieldTurf has been a great partner for us and they are rightly recognized as the global leader, having the highest amount of FIFA certified pitches in soccer stadiums and training facilities around the world."This decision keeps the number of MLS teams playing on artificial surfaces at four: New England, Seattle, Portland and Vancouver.Saputo Stadium, where the Montreal Impact will play in MLS starting next year, has a grass surface, as will the new facility for the Houston Dynamo scheduled to open next spring.

November 21, 2011, 5:39 PMTaped E.P.L. Game Outdrew Live M.L.S. FinalBy JACK BELLOvernight television ratings from two of Sunday’s soccer games broadcast in the United States showed that Fox’s tape-delayed broadcast of the Chelsea-Liverpool match almost doubled the rating of Major League Soccer’s championship match.Fox showed the English Premier League game, won by Liverpool, 2-1, live on its Fox Soccer channel with a kickoff of 11 a.m. Eastern. The match was then shuttled over to the main Fox network, where it was shown on tape delay either before or after one of the N.F.L. games carried Sunday afternoon by Fox.M.L.S. Cup ’11, which featured the three designated players — Robbie Keane, Landon Donovan and David Beckham — of the Los Angeles Galaxy, kicked off against the Houston Dynamo on ESPN at about 9:20 p.m. Eastern. The Galaxy won the game, 1-0.The recorded E.P.L. game drew a 1.5 rating, according to Nielsen, which translates to about 1.5 percent of viewers in 56 of the biggest markets in the United States. The M.L.S. championship game attracted at a rating of 0.8.Fox has plans to carry another E.P.L. game on its main network the morning of the Super Bowl, Sunday, Feb. 5, but has not yet completed its plans for that day.In a related note, ESPN said Monday that it would not renew the contract of the analyst John Harkes, but instead would promote Taylor Twellman to the position. Twellman, 31, is a former M.L.S. Most Valuable Player who retired in 2010 after sustaining several concussions. He was a studio analyst this past season.

yea we talked about this earlier in the thread. The comparison is a bit difficult to make for three reasons1) A broadcast network always has an advantage over a cable network2) You could have put cross stitching on after an NFL game and it would still draw ratings due to the power of the lead in show. MLS Cup had a studio show on before it as a lead in.3) MLS Cup ratings were divided between two stations. The media is only reporting the ESPN ratings, seeming to forget that Galavision also showed the game at the same time.

they used to but replaced it with grass before the 2011 season started.3 of the 4 are in the pacific northwest so it must have something to do with the weather. As much as I hate the turf, I can kind of understand Seattle being stuck with it. Grass would never hold up with that many teams playing on it.

Villarreal is garbage this season. They are playing better the last few weeks, but they aren't a top team any longer. I don't see them taking down Napoli, who is on a tear this year in CL and doing some damage in Serie A too. Also, what the hell happened to inter this season??

Just watched the game, Cavani is a stud. Napoli hasn't been this good for 20 years so seeing them play this well is a treat. I've seen quite a few games at San Paulo but I never saw it like it was today. Outstanding. Now to beat Villarreal and advance. O surdato nammurato!
 He's been a force for my Football Manager Liverpool side for quite some time now.

Latest world rankings are outhttp://www.fifa.com/worldranking/rankingtable/index.html
England seems too high.
Brazil, Portugal, and Argentina have all been playing pretty mediocre. Portugal just squeaked into Euro 2012 and Brazil and Argentina have been getting beat up by their fellow South Americans. The top 4 are pretty clear. After that it's a bit of a crapshoot to fill out the rest of the top ten.

Group A the group of death by far. Bayern, Villareal, Man City, Napoli.
damn.if any of you caught the Serie A last year, you'd agree with me that Napoli were a really fun team to watch: Hamsic, Cavanni and Lavezzi were all tearing it up... some dynamic attacking stuff from the South.Outside of Inter (my team from having lived in Milan for a bit), I started to really get behind Napoli- that draw is the suck for them... but don't write them off yet- hopefully they can produce some magic and knock the traitorous yellow submarine and one of the others out.
Napoli!

Look at United... they can't even beat mediocore quality CL teams anymore. The international field is getting tougher. Some of these small league winners that used to be fodder have some real talent.I think Mancini is doing pretty well. Sure, he has a team of superstars, but United and Chelsea aren't exactly scraping the bottom of the barrel. It also brings a lot of player management headaches that he has thus far navigated successfully. This is the first year City has really looked like a team. It's one thing to get all of these players on a roster, but it's entirely another to get them to gel on and off the field.

I think the hardest part of not advancing is going to be trying to keep everybody happy. United has a mix of young and old that can be more easily appeased. City is pretty much a bunch of players in their prime that are going to want to play.

Domenica with a population of 72K is the Herman Cain of world soccer. In October they jumped up 46 places in the rankings.
Dominica’s big boost came on the back of a series of impressive results in the past two months, with two wins over Barbados in September, first by a score of 2-0 and then 3-1. The friendly victories were then followed by a pair of astounding wins in qualifying in the early stages of the 2010 Caribbean Cup, first a 10-0 hammering of the British Virgin Islands and then a slim 1-0 win over the Dominican Republic
but fell 21 positions in November following away losses to Panama and Nicaragua.Lebanon improved by 35 positions to #111 after upsetting South Korea in Beirut. They will advance to the next round of Asian WC qualifiers unless Kuwait beats Korea away in February.

Europa League!

Exciting first 25 minutes in the Barca/Milan game. Both teams going all out and really playing an impressive style. Barca have been the better team, they look like they're all on the same page today, timing is perfect. Milan managed to equalize with just a fantastic pass-and-finish from Seedorf to Ibrahimovic. A simple moment of brilliance.

Each team has missed absolute sitters from inside the 6-yard box....Kevin Prince Boateng (#### that guy) set up Robinho perfectly and he managed to put it over the net from about 3 yards out. Barca had a great combo from Xavi to Thiago to Messi, who put it off the bar from like 4 yards.

Aquilani takes down Xavi in the box for a PK (good call), but the ref inexplicably gives a yellow to Nesta instead. Messi stutter-steps the PK and scores, but it's disallowed and Messi is given a yellow-card for some reason? Messi scores on the 2nd PK.

Villa nearly makes it 3-1 just a minute later, but Abbiati makes a great save.

Did not see it but I think the stutter step is grounds for a yellow...

That's the only explanation....don't see the stutter-step often. I had the TV on mute because I was listening to the Arsenal game; I don't know if Messi was talking back to the ref or something.

he completely stopped on his stutter step.he basically walked up to the ball, stopped to tie a shoe and fix his shin guards then kick

That Milan v Barca game was one of the better games I've seen this year... great action both ways, great goals, strange plays (Messi with the "oops" stutter step PK)... do yourself a favor and watch a replay.

eta:  Seedorf
