Random seeding in the NCAA tournament would be kind of awesome.
The whole promotion and relegation in professional sports is the thing I would take from soccer. Holy Christ what a different dynamic that would bring to baseball and basketball especially.

Wow.

City all over United in those first 15 minutes- I figured it was going to be rout. Then a perfectly executed counter, basically out of nothing, and United goes up 1-0. Game on, I figured. Then that shambolic call by the ref... terrible, terrible call.

Yeah, it was clearly two footed- but not a whiff of Nani in that tackle and all ball yet. This seems like the type of play by the ref where it's been dictated that all two-footed tackles are immediate reds, regardless of circumstance, so all room for human decision gets lost. Much the same way these stupid hand-ball in the box or last man commiting the foul dictate immediate red/yellow rather than allowing the ref the room to use his judgement. I hate all of that. Let the ref determine what's appropriate based on the specific circumstances of each play- I'd rather that kind of mistake than automatically giving this kind of foul a red. So we had a great game basically ruined- although full credit to City for putting up a fight, and quite frankly looking the better team w/10 or 11.

lol at Scholes too... I did a triple take when they showed him warming up... wtf? And it had all the hallmarks of being exactly the worst situation for the automatic-Red-Machine. But then I forgot how good he is dictating the game with simple passes... if he's got some time to do it. But Scholes and Anderson on the field at the same time just begged for a red card or an easy, quick push through the middle by City.

I've always basically routed for United, even though I'm more a neutral than a fan (don't ask me why- probably just a sucker for having them forced down my throat so much and recognizing them better than other teams)... but I soooo wanted them to lose today after that red. That ref should be sent to the lower leagues.
There is no rule with regard to two-footed tackles anywhere and I really hope there is no "secret" rule.

Serious foul play

A player is guilty of serious foul play if he uses excessive force or brutality

against an opponent when challenging for the ball when it is in play.

A tackle that endangers the safety of an opponent must be sanctioned as

serious foul play.

Any player who lunges at an opponent in challenging for the ball from the

front, from the side or from behind using one or both legs, with excessive force

and endangering the safety of an opponent is guilty of serious foul play.

The rules are written to be quite vague on a lot of issues. All of the possibilities you mentioned are called in a myriad of ways. It's not like football. The referees are given a ton of leeway to interprete. Tackles are being called tighter, but De Jong didn't even get a foul when he tackled Ben Arfa and that was way worse than this.

Foy just blew it. And it wasn't just with this call or this game. He's not up to par with the other referees. I always cringe when I see him reffing a game. It's not like there is a distinct bias anywhere he's just inconsistent and haphazard in how he calls games.

I'm really not sure that this should come from the official LFC Facebook page.ETA - Never mind. It's Facebook's biggest unofficial fan page. Still a bad idea.

LiverpoolStewart Downing has been arrested on suspicion of assault after allegedly hitting an ex-girlfriend in a nightclub row.
LiverpoolOn the positive side of the Downing story, it's his second shot on target this season!
It's in the news anyway. I'm not sure it really matters.

Pro/rel in America would work best in college football IMO. Enough "big" programs In the country to sustain it.
I don't think it can work effectively in college sports - the key is once you are promoted, you have a new budget to play with, and players you can sign. It would be tough to move up a level and stay on that level with the current players you have.

You can do an average over several years or something. There's multiple ways to do promotion and relegation.

It's pretty tough to move up and stay up in the professional soccer leagues as well. Since the EPL has been in existence, 43 of 53 promoted teams have eventually been relegated, 26 of those were relegated the first year. But, of the original teams in the EPL only seven have managed to not be relegated. Quite a few have been up and down more than once--Man City being one. It's a great concept.

Agree that it would be tough to stay up, just like it is in Europe.Re: new budgets, I'm envisioning a promoted college program getting a bump in TV and bowl/playoff money and more TV exposure, which should, theoretically, lead to better recruits.Of course the reality would be: upstart college team (ex. Houston Cougars) get promoted to a "BCS" conference, head coach becomes a hot commodity and gets hired to a traditional power program, and Houston likely gets relegated quickly.Honestly, I don't think pro/rel would really work at all in America, but I picked college football because you theoretically have more markets/teams than available slots. By contrast, having the Pawtucket Red Sox in MLB, while a cool story for sure, isn't economically viable long-term.

Eric Lichaj returned to training this week for Villa for the first time in 4 months.

Jose Torres also returned to league play after a long injury putting in 90 minutes for Pachuca

Sounds like Freddy Adu's time in MLS might be short-lived. Spanish news outlets are reporting that Rayo Vallecano, who Adu is currently training with, are angling for a transfer.

I'd be fine with it from the Union's perspective as long as the money they get on the sale goes towards buying out Roger Torres' loan deal. Otherwise, the team would be suddenly leaking in attacking options from the center of midfield.

My second favorite Madrid team, Rayo, is probably going to be playing the Primera next season. They're from a Madrid working class suburb and have very little money and definitely no superstars. We'll see how long they last in the Primera.
 What can you tell us Z? Would this be good for Adu?

So, according to 'Arry, Demba Ba has a release clause below £7M. Sounds like a deal to me.

I wouldn't mind seeing him in a Spurs shirt at all.

http://soccernet.espn.go.com/news/story/_/id/1006386/redknapp:-demba-ba-available-for-less-than-L7m?cc=5901
The problem with Ba is he has serious knee issues. Nobody is going to commit to anything long-term. Plus, they need a striker now. They really only have Adebayor and Defoe and Ba isn't going to be back from the Africa Cup of Nations for awhile. I believe they will likely go after Hoilett who can play on the wing or as a striker, but he still has a lot of developing to do. It would have been nice to grab Ba on the free transfer that Newcastle got him on. Not for the transfer money as much as the wages. I doubt they are paying him much, but the next team he jumps to will probably shell out a fair amount. Either that or grab him on a pay to play basis.

Apparently my parents met a tourist couple from Sweden about a month ago and they have been hanging out with them a bit ever since. My parents took them to the Rose Bowl parade yesterday (kind of a cool thing to see as a tourist I imagine). Anyway, I get this call from my Mom asking if I watch English soccer and who I like. I tell her Tottenham and I hear my Mom talking in the background to someone totally butchering the name. Turns out the guy from Sweden is a huge Tottenham fan and my Mom puts him on the phone. He gets on and he is going nuts talking in a Swedish/English mix. Between the accent and the background noise I make out a lot of Bale, Wednesday, Everton, Lennon, Bale, Bale, Bale, some more Bale, and apparently he got to see them last month for the first time ever. I struggled to understand him, but he was literally bubbling with excitement. At the end of the conversation I don't think there was much in the way of communication done, but somehow we both ended up pretty excited.

I thought it was pretty cool and it totally came out of the blue. Meeting another Tottenham fan in the US is pretty rare. Actually, I don't think I have ever met another. I know he was a tourist, but since he wasn't from England I'm still counting it.

I don't know if you've ever caught it, but in the Beatles' movie "Help", the scene where they save Ringo from a tiger by getting everyone to sing Beethoven's "Ode to Joy", one of the shots they used to demonstrate how many people were involved apparently was a crowd scene from a game involving Tottenham. You have to look quick to catch it, and since you're a Spurs fan maybe you'll get more context out of it than I did. All I caught was a shot of the scoreboard saying "Totteham Hotspur".That's all, carry on... :hophead: and

Chelsea has finally confirmed the expected acquisition of Gary Cahill. McEachran looks certain to be loaned to Swansea, giving him a good chance to see regular action this season.

I think Harry actually let it out of the bag just in case anyone else didn't know. Knocking Newcastle down a peg certainly wouldn't hurt Spurs. And cool story.

Spain got rid of their "Beckham exception", which allowed foreigners in the top tax bracket to pay 25%. Now they're up to 54%, which puts them on even footing with a lot of Europe.

Barca has most of their non-Spaniards locked up long-term (Alves, Messi, Mascherano), but RM could feel the sting from this I think.

I'm not really sure how much playing time he'll actually get, if any. Rayo is doing fairly well in the Primera this year, sitting in 13th place. Nearly everyone had tipped them for relegation, so being 4 places above the drop nearly half the season complete is a really good sign. They may not want to rock the boat. There's been some interest in a swap of player with Atletico, but nothing serious in place yet. They don't have a lot of flair in the attacking half, especially wingers or attacking players that can create. In that sense, Freddy might be a good fit...

Tottenham looked good again against Everton. Their match-up against City in two weeks should be a great game.

Donovan still needs some time to adjust. He didn't play poorly, but he was late on his tackles, slow on his passes, etc. It probably didn't help that he was matched up against a team that is so fast.

That is the difficult part of these ultra short loans. By the time he finds his footing, he will be heading back to LA to get ready for the CCL.

MLS superdraft tomorrow at noon (ET) on ESPN 2.
The Generation Adidas class looks pretty good this year. I doubt there will be another Joao Plata out there among the internationals but there is likely to be something good. Plenty of off season movement by all teams. Here is a run down of the movement as tracked by Big Soccer. This is missing a couple of signings from today.
