USA To Host 2016 Pan American Cup Featuring Best Of CONCACAF, South America - Report

Rumors of CONCACAF and CONMEBOL teaming up for a tournament featuring the best teams from the Americas could soon become reality. According to ESPN Deportes' Jorge Ramos, the two confederations have agreed to put on a Pan American Cup in 2016 that will be hosted by the United States.

Initially it was thought that CONMEBOL would invite the best from CONCACAF to play in a 16-team Copa America, but that appears to be off the table. Instead, CONMEBOL will continue to play Copa America for the South American championship and CONCACAF will continue to play the Gold Cup for the championship of North America, Central America and the Caribbean. Then, in the year after those two tournaments, there will be a Pan American Cup with the best of the two confederations.

The idea of a 16-team tournament with the best teas that the Americas have to offer is tantalizing for soccer fans in the region. While there is no doubt that the South American teams are superior to the CONCACAF ones, putting some of the bigger teams like the United States and Mexico up against the best of South America in a serious tournament will be a joy.

Copa America is a brilliant tournament, but gets little attention outside of South America. The Gold Cup is largely ignored even in North and Central America. Right now, there are two major international tournaments -- the World Cup and Euro. A Pan American Cup has the potential to resonate not just in the Americas, but around the world as another major tournament.

To this point, there is no confirmation that the tournament is a go and in world soccer it is dangerous to go with anything before it is confirmed, but Ramos is often reliable and this tournament makes too much sense. Putting the United States, Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Chile and the rest of the top, most popular teams in the Americas in a tournament that is hosted by the U.S., with its huge population, stadiums and corporations is too big of a potential moneymaker to pass up.

Venezuela is the only country from South America to never have qualified for the WC.

While there is still a long way to go, they are off to one of their best starts ever in qualifying.

They have won both games at home, including beating Argentina, and have two important road draws at Uruguay and at Colombia. Only one loss so far at Ecuador.

They have a big game next Saturday at home against Chile. If they can get another three points there they are going to open some eyes.

I caught the second half of the ENgland game... D did not look good- conistently 8 men in the box and counting on Belgium to miss the many chances they got. If you're counting and hoping on teams to not strike the ball well, there's a problem. I couldn't even tell you who was playing MF... oh yeah- Parker (and I'm a fan ofhis) who was completely over run.Sure England looked dangerous when the got forwrad- they have dangerous players. But as a team, they looked completely lost- Belgium was far superior, and looked actually like a fun team to watch. My first real time watching Hazard- very nice player. Reminds me a bit of Sneijder, but busier.
 
Not sure what to predict for a starting line up for the US tonight. Will Klinsmann put his best 11 on the field or will this be the game that mostly bench players get the start?

This is their golden generation. They may not get another shot for a decade or more.
 
I'll catch both on DVR, but I'm looking forward to seeing the Mexico v Brazil game- primarily to see if Mexico gets over-run, or as I think based on what IMO is a fairly weak Brazil MF, they more than hold their own and get a decent result.

Also think the Canada game is going to be interesting. Will JK treat it as a chance to see some of the subs ahead of WCQ? Or does he treat it as a last chance to fine-tune the starters? Either way, do the US players continue to play an attacking minded style, getting numbers and creating triangles out of the deep MF... which is probable based on the last two games. IF so- does it work closer to the way it did vs Scotland, or will Canada's likely pressure undo that game?

A month ago I would have bet we could all name the top starting 11 with ease by now. But preparations did not go smoothly. 1) I still don't have a good feel for who one of the starting CB's is2) Never expected Jozy to arrive so late and not play a minute yet3) Dempsey's semi injury makes understanding who he will start over a little bit trickier. 4) On a positive note I thought Gomez looked solid in the lone striker role, better than I expected to be honest and that may throw a wrinkle as well.

Uzbekistan utterly screwed by FIFA/Blatter with another legitimate goal missed by the officials. And of course Iran snatches victory in the final minute of extra time after mustering all of two shots on goal throughout the game. How much more of this nonsense before in-game video review finally gets introduced? :wall:

Is this a poor attempt at humor?I will be the idiot straight man and say if he does use a first choice lineup it won't have anything to do with the fact US lost to Canada in Olympic qualification.

Was it THAT bad of a joke? Starting to see some rumblings from my local soccer nerds on Twitter about how they're all heading up to Toronto this afternoon. I've got a game at 6 tonight and will have to watch on the DVR :(
