Venezuela is the only country from South America to never have qualified for the WC. While there is still a long way to go, they are off to one of their best starts ever in qualifying. Semifinals in Copa America 2011 was a very good result
 
I set up a simple Euro Fantasy League on the UEFA site. Its a standard salary cap system - the same as they've done in the past in these McDonald's sponsored fantasy leagues. The salary cap seems pretty high, so you can pretty much take your pick of the superstars to fill out the rosters.

This is being used more and more. It is shaving cream. A bunch of leagues in South America use it and MLS started to use it as well. It is such a simple solution that I don't understand why it is not formally adopted by Fifa.

Because it makes perfect sense and FIFA hasn't figured out how to make money off of it yet.
 
US has a ton of great scoring chances in second half against Brasil only to not score. Friggan Mexico scores on a what was a mis hit cross.

Seems like such an easy sponsorship tie in. Barbasol already sponsors soccer.

Love this solution too. Here's the line, don't cross it. Speeds things up and makes the free kicks more dangerous.

And the line disperses so quickly as well. There is litterally no down side to this outside of the people who enjoy watching the wall inch forward until it eats up a yard or two.
 
How much better does Mexico look than the US in terms of defensive communication and touch in the attacking third? Mexico has some outstanding talent in Guardado, Gio, and Chicharito. Id love to have any of those players on the US side.

Marginal IMO. They are not creating any more scoring chances than the US did. They scored on a miss-hit cross and a pk. The US creative numerous chances on good possessions.

But those chances only came in the last 30 mins after brazil was up 3-1. LD was impotent, and Torres was crap compared to Guardado on the left.

Sure their goals have been cheap, but I think the difference in handling the high pressure of Brazil, while applying their own is going well for Mexico. They look determined to not give space to Neymar and Marcelo, cutting off their angles at every turn.

100% agree with this. Mexico was much better organized and played much much better team defense than the US did.In terms of offense though, which was your original point, I saw nothing from Mexico today that made me think they were leaps and bounds better than the US in the final 3rd.

 
I hope we give a few more guys a shot on defense. Boca and Dolo looking old of late...not sure how well they will fare in 2014.

Would also like to see Jozy and Boyd get some action.

They've never had the talent like they do now. Here are some their top players:Salomón Rondón - 22 y.o., Striker plays for Málaga in la liga. 11 goals in 37 appearances last season. He's really come on in the last few years.Oswaldo Vizcarrondo - 28 y.o., DB, plays for Club América (Mexico). Excellent in the air on defense, but can use that on set pieces on O as well.Juan Arango, 32 y.o., midfielder, plays for Borussia in Germany. 34 games last season with 6 goals and 12 assists.Giancarlo Maldonado, 29 y.o., striker, plays for Atlas on loan from Atlante. Hurt currently. Played for Chivas USA for a short stint.Tomás Rincón, 24 y.o., midfielder, plays for HSV in Germany. Was awesome in Copa América in 2011.So it's a mix of guys on the younger side getting some runs in Europe, coupled with some older players that have been around the block in CONMEBOL qualifying and Copa América play. They play good team football, and have a knack for scoring late.

Agree with both of you.The Mexican defensive shape was fantastic on the day all the way through the MF- shut down passing angles/lanes and didn't allow the outside backs to get forward. Yeah, Brazil dominated possession in the first half and created some chances, but not any/many slam-dunks.

Also- when the Mexican defenders and MFs got the ball, they didn't lose it right away on the first touch. THat helps set up and play against the high pressure a ton- also helped them launch some decent counters with numbers.

I do think too that the Brazilians weren't quite as high-pressure as they were against the US. Whether this was from being tired or out of respect to Mexico, I don't know- but it was pretty evident. I think it's the latter, especially as the Mexicans were able to pass out of it enough and attack. That forced the Brazilians to limit their numbers and pressure forward.

And those were some seriuosly gifted goals. But credit to them- they more than held their own vs Brazil Olympic team.

Shea was my pick early last year to be a break out player. Shortly after that he hit a funk and it has been one so deep that he simply can not get out of it. Even worse he has compounded his poor play with mental weakness causing him to be suspended for three games. I can only hope he is using this time to take a look in the mirror and realize what he could be losing.
 
Hope it is nothing serious. I would hate to see him miss the upcoming qualifiers. Fabian is going to be needed in Guat.

For those that missed it, Fabian got hurt in warm ups.
