Puyol isn't the same player he was even a year ago. I don't think he'll be a factor in WC2014.

Yeah, I can't see it. Xavi might not be starting anymore by that point either. But they still have plenty of talent to be a contender in two years.I think the top priority between now and Brazil will be to develop a reliable/elite striker (or two).

Fabergas really impressed me this tournament. He may be able to try and step into a Xavi type role in '14. Spain might be better served if Barca loans out Cuenca to somewhere he can play 90 all season.

They said elite, not some schmo that only scored 57, 48, and 63 goals for club and country during the span of 2008-2011 seasons. Just look at how his production dropped off this year...

Although not officially announced, it appears that AVB is taking over Tottenham, possibly tomorrow. The bookies are no longer taking bets on the job in England.

Not sure where I stand on this to be honest. Everyone knows he flopped last season, but he was very successful at Porto, which had a younger squad than Chelsea. That seems more in line with Spurs current squad to me.

De Rossi just signed a five year deal at €10M/yr which makes him the highest paid Italian player in Serie A. Perrotta has been a fixture at Roma for a long time. He'll be 35 in September so is hopefully just keeping the space warm for Bradley.

The Revs just made a pretty good signing (if the rumors are to be believed).
They are about to sign Jerry Bengston to a 4 year deal.
Bengston is 25 years old and has led the Honduran league in scoring three consecutive sessions. He will also be on the Honduran Olympic team as one of the three over aged players.
He fills a spot at striker the Revs sorely need and may solidify their push for a playoff spot.

Speaking of Liverpool and Bradley's possible move to Roma, ESPN2 will be showing their friendly at Fenway Park as the first part of a double header with the MLS Allstar game against Chelsea.
Roma is majority owned by 4 Boston businessmen, one of whom is an investor in Fenway Sports Group (owner of Liverpool).

It's a gamble. Blanc was also in the running and I would actually have preferred him, but apparently Levy was happier with AVB.Tottenham has a younger team than Chelsea and they are more suited for his style, the defense especially. Kaboul and Walker are incredibly fast and BAE is no slouch. I'm guessing Vertonghen gets paired with Kaboul. While he is not nearly as fast as the others his strength and positioning skills should work effectively with Kaboul (he's definitely still not slow by any means). There probably isn't another team in the EPL that's better suited to play the style of soccer he utilized at Porto with such success. If he can't succeed with this Tottenham team I imagine his credibility as a top manager will take a big blow.

MLS should continue to reap the benefits of the growing interest in international soccer. It's just a matter time until we are a Bundesliga caliber league IMHO.

Just randomly browsing Wikipedia, I've stumbled upon the Cachirules scandal, which I've never even heard of before. I'm sure some of the older US soccer fans have heard of it - maybe it's been mentioned in here - but it was new to me. Mexico was barred from World Cup qualification for the 1990 World Cup due to fielding overage players in a FIFA youth tournament in 1989. I didn't know this.
Only 2 CONCACAF teams earned berths in the 1990 World Cup, and the US finished second (on goal differential, despite having the same number of points) behind Costa Rica in qualifying.
I know we've discussed the importance of Paul Caligiuri's goal and how it is possibly the most important moment in USMNT history, but I didn't even realize that Mexico wasn't even a part of the qualification process. With the US qualifying for the 1990 Cup, hosting the 1994 Cup was legitimized, MLS is eventually spawned, and <scene missing> here we are. If Mexico is never disqualified from the 1990 qualifiers, who knows if the US even gets that chance against T&T?

I am too lazy to find it in this thread but there was someone (Scoobygang maybe) who put together a great post of just how many things went right for the US to qualify in 1990. The Caliguiri goal was like number 10 on the list
. It was an incredible confluence of events.The US was just 15 minutes away from being out in the second round of qualifying before they exploded for 4 goals to make it into the final round of qualifying.As a side note, it was not a FIFA tournament that got Mexico in trouble. Mexico fielded 4 overage players for the 1988 Olympic qualifiers which got them banned.

I think the circumstances accelerated the timetable a bit but the development was inevitable given expansion of the WC format, FIFA's relentless pursuit of money and the maturation of a generation of American soccer players.

Thankfully we will never know but I remember strongly that there was such little support for the WC in the US that Fifa was seriously considering pulling it. Once the US qualified for the 1990 version, a couple of important sponsors came aboard. It still was not enough for FIFA who then engineered Alan Rothenberg coming out of no where to win the USSF presidency from Werner Fricker who created the view that the USSF was nothing more than a mom and pop shop (which it was). If FIFA does not help Rothenberg to victory, I feel like the US would have lost the WC. No WC, no MLS. No MLS, no new stadiums, no academies and significantly slower growth in player development.

I was reading an article with regard to the new availability of OL's Lloris. It seemed odd considering OL is a pretty big French club and there were not clear openings in any of the other big European teams.
Apparently France's new tax structure is forcing team's to offload players so a lot of players that wouldn't normally be available suddenly are. It's not uncommon for Ligue 1 players to move, but there may be a fair amount of players that are exepcted to leave eventually being made available this transfer window. It's definitely something to keep an eye on.
