Thoughts from the Chelsea-Reading game:

* As the link between the backline and the creative/attacking mids, Mikel leaves a lot to be desired. He plays much more like a Central Defender than a holding/defensive midfielder. His first reaction with the ball is to kick it backwards rather than link the ball up the field. I was really happy (not to mention shocked) that Di Matteo subbed him out. Moving forward, Id like to see Essien in that role. He played there in the preseason and looked good IMO.

* Chelseas attack seems to go exclusively through the center of the field. They dont field any wingers nor do their Fullbacks make any runs down the side to open up in the middle. It seems like a purely tactical decision; cant say I like it. Maybe some of the more knowledgeable posters can explain why. Is it solely a defensive maneuver?

* I really enjoyed the Mata-Hazard-Oscar play behind the striker over the last 30 minutes.

* Torres was awful today. Excellent service from the midfield and he missed the mark time after time. Also, that was a pretty remarkable no call on his goal; that was clearly offside.

Anyone see this show about Wembley FC on NBC Sports - they have a guy trying out for keeper that I know I could beat out - even at 54. They have hired Terry Venables as the coach/director
I did not see the show but we have talked about this in the thread a few times. Thanks for the heads up. http://forums.footballguys.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=305522&st=41700&p=14483493entry14483493http://forums.footballguys.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=305522&st=43300&p=14632326entry14632326

Agree on all counts.

Up to the last one. I don't think Torres looked awful. And I don't think he got excellent service. He had a bunch of half chances the didn't go his way. He was challenged on just about all of them. Really, the only clear cut chance he had he buried. He looked very good Sunday. If I was a Chelsea fan I'd be happy with the way things have gone for him so far.

Didn't see the game today, but I've liked the way Torres has been playing. I also think that as Hazard, Mata and Oscar (and Marin) get more time together, that Torres will do even better- he plays better with guys who are moving around freely and pass the ball and run off it well. That said- if he's continuing to not bury chances, somebody else is going to have to score those goals and those three MFs aren't exactly big goal-getters. I'll say it again... Dempsey.

Manchester City have confirmed that Sergio Aguero’s knee injury is not too serious and he will only miss a couple of weeks. The Argentine striker was injured in a strong but fair challenge by Southampton’s Nathaniel Clyne in City’s 3-2 season-opening home win on Sunday with fears he may miss up to six months with severe ligament damage. But Aguero should be fit enough to face Stoke City on September 15 following FIFA’s international break the weekend prior."I don't think Sergio will be out for long and we are hoping he will be back after the international break which is obviously fantastic news for him and for us," manager Roberto Mancini told City's official website."We were very worried a couple of days ago because we feared he could be out for six months or maybe even more which would have been very bad news."It looked like a very strange injury at the time and because it was his knee, we were obviously very concerned so this news is a relief for everybody."

Chelsea has to own the least deserved 6 points +4 start ever.
Their opening fixtures are pretty soft. Home vs Newcastle, a week off, away to QPR, Stoke at the Bridge, away at Arsenal and Norwich at home. Six weeks and the furthest they have to travel is from SW6 to N5.
They also have the UEFA Supercup game at Monaco on August 31. Perhaps they will bring Courtois home with them to start preparing as Cech's successor after that howler today.Torres' goal was offside but Chelsea were dominating the game at that point and I think its silly to say the 3 points were undeserved. I don't understand how anyone can complain about the 3 points they took at Wigan. Both results were well-earned. There's a lot to be resolved on this team but I think they will produce entertaining games all season. Tons of options with the midfield talent, a few questions at the back, ongoing drama up front, and the transfer window is still open. With 5 assists for Hazard on 6 goals over two games, he seems to be fitting in well. Oscar is a work in progress and his role is undefined, but I love the guy and can see him spelling Lampard in the pivot at least this season. Torres is a classic love/hate situation for Chelsea fans, but I think most are still behind him.

No can have Courtois. Keep your oily mitts off him for the rest of this season. Better yet, sell him to where he belongs, along the banks of the Manzanares (at least until my boys move...).

My 4 year old has his first soccer game Saturday.

Got his jersey today...team color is light blue and he has #5 with his name on the back. :excited: :excited:

Its like they knew his dad would have asked for that exact setup. :banned:

Wigan didn't show up for the first 5 minutes and then outplayed Chelsea for the mostly the rest of the match. No doubt Chelsea dominated late and deserved to score but Reading was competitive for far too much of that match. I do think they will improve and be a challenger for the top 3. As for Torres, I have been a fan since Euro 2008 and he might pull me into a Chelsea fan if I can get FoxSoccerHD. His touch was horrid for much of the match. He did display some nice 1v1 skills. But I don't give him any credit for the push in offsides goal.

Football Trivia: Which player holds the English Premier League record for most consecutive games played?
Nigel Ripken Jr.
Close!
It's gotta be a goalkeeper, right?
You'd think so. And probably not one at a really big club because they have too many games to play and too much depth. But it'd also have to be a club good enough to stay up every year.Maybe Tim Howard?

I think I read that Friedel is the current holder of most consecutive EPL games played but I don't know who holds the record for the history of the EPL.
He's played all 38 for eight straight seasons. That's really impressive.Howard's done it for 4 years.

Nice result for Houston tonight playing mostly their second team. Would have been nice to hold the 3-0 but with 9 regular starters not starting it was probably the best they could hope for.

I'm in a good mood tonight so I'll give you as many ###### breaks as you need, but you've got to have something to say first. You'd be a damn fool to claim Chelsea wasn't the best team out there in either of these first two games imo, but that's the kind of discussion that makes this game fun so have at it.

They were playing a newly promoted team and a perennial relegation scrapper so anything less than six points would be a huge disappointment. Chelsea didn't look great doing it but style points don't count in the final standings. They're through their first two games with maximum points and no key injuries (Marko Marin is irreplaceable until he actually plays in a game). Today's performance could turn out to be a blessing in disguise if it convinces management that they need to shore up their defense.

The Correct Answer - our very own Brad Friedel

I think Chelsea is a bit lucky in it's first two games, but saying neither was well deserved is a bit harsh.

After they got up 2-0 early vs Wigan, they stopped pressing forward, and were content with watching Wigan knock it around a bit. If you had turned the game on at the 10 mark or so, and didn't know the score, you would probably have thought Wigan the better side. However, they had very few serious dangerous opportunities, and Chelsea looked disinterested if nothing else, so there is no way you can consider them lucky to have won that game at all.

The game vs Reading, well, sure, Torres was offside, but there are missed calls all the time, and even if Torres didn't boink that one in, who's to say Chelsea wouldn't have had another later? Was Reading unlucky not to get the draw, sure. But, it's not as if Chelsea's victory was "undeserved".

Gonna be a long season for sure for Reading. Not only to they lack talent, but they don't have much to bring in off their bench either.

I did like the way they planned for Chelsea too, I think it's the way to go. Basically leaving Mikel unmarked, and playing off Lampard, and anytime Hazard or Mata got the ball, did not give them space. That's a dangerous game to play, as Hazard is super quick, and Mata has strong ball skills to make quick, short passes to get around defenders, but if you give them space, you're done, so you need apply the pressure, imho. I did like the way Oscar, Mata and Hazard linked up later on, that's gonna be a dangerous lineup out there as they get used to playing each other.

I didn't think Torres looked too terrible either, but to me it seemed as if they weren't looking for him near enough. Ramires in particular. Torres was making good runs, and a few times was in great position to receive a pass or volley, yet his teammates constantly either shot, dribbled or just ignored him altogether -maybe that's why he didn't look too bad as he didn't have many opportunities to miss.

Chelsea does look severely weak in the back though. That will be their weak spot this year, other teams should be able to break them down and get good chances.

Looks like Grantland is going to start running an MLS column titled the Designated Plater. Lol at the opening

Welcome to your Designated Player.

Each week I'll be lumbering up and down the keyboard, eating up payroll, averaging about one good performance in five, and discernibly out of breath by paragraph three. There'll be an occasional half-decent observation, a lot of ostentatious badge-kissing, and a strong suggestion that I've lost a yard or two throughout. Most of what I try won't come off, though it won't stop me from trying outrageous flicks of logic — and when it doesn't work I'll be standing hands on hips and shaking my head at the younger Grantland staffers (whose general mental agility, diligence, and grasp of local relevance make me look bad). Oh, and I may take winter off to do all this twice as well in England. You're welcome.
