gee, I wonder why this obvious concern was swept under the rug when it mattered during the voting process? God I hate Blatter. I would normally be so happy that he is stepping down in 2015 but with Plantini waiting behind him, things are not going to get any better.

LONDON (AP) -- FIFA President Sepp Blatter has raised fresh doubts about the safety of playing the 2022 World Cup in Qatar during summer. There have been growing calls to move the tournament to the winter to avoid the sweltering desert heat that is expected to exceed 104 degrees in June and July. UEFA President Michel Platini is one of those requesting the switch.
The whole Qatar thing is beyond lunacy. Shifting the WC to the winter will be vigorously opposed by all of UEFA. FIFA have painted themselves into yet another corner.

The UEFA President is the loudest voice right now for a winter WC.

RM pretty thin in the back these days. No Ronaldo today either (cards), but I imagine they cruise against Osasuna.
Osasuna 0-0 Real Madrid :lmao:
Watched most of this. RM didn't outplay them and just get unlucky, they just didn't have much in the way of creativity/opportunity without Ronaldo/Ozil. Starting Modric at CAM instead of Ozil may have cost them two points.Going back to the Liga vs. EPL argument, I can't imagine anyone thinking that QPR is better than Osasuna.
Since Harry took over after QPR's loss to ManU on 11/24, they've earned 10 points in 9 games with a win over Chelsea and a draw against Spurs. They'd only earned 4 points from their first 13 games.Since 11/24, Osasuna has played 6 and earned 5 points with a draw against RM. Prior to that they'd earned 10 points from 13 games. While they both may stink. It looks like QPR's playing better right now.
According to Transfermarkt.de, QPR total player value is Euro 109,500,000 while Osasuna's player value is euro 45,900,000.

The clubs are what counts.

The heat won't be a problem though, because of those two dozen domed, air conditioned stadiums the Qatari will have built by 2022. Right?Personally, I hope FIFA goes on pretending that this Qatar farce is actually happening for as long as possible. The later they admit that it's simply not going to work, the more likely it is to end up in the one country most prepared to host a cup on zero notice.

Cosmos planning 25,000-seat stadium at Belmont

By BRIAN LEWIS

Posted: 4:21 PM, January 15, 2013

After a prior ownership group that was long on promise and short on production, this new Seamus O'Brien regime has taken them quickly from nothing more than a lifestyle brand to a team expected to start play in NASL this fall, and now one with plans of building their own home.

The Post can confirm a story initially reported by ThisIsCosmosCountry, that the club has proposed construction of a 25,000-seat stadium in Elmont. It will be privately-funded, and the centerpiece of a plan that will run an estimated $400 million.

They have officially submitted a bid to the Empire State Development Corporation (ESD), the umbrella organization for the state’s two main economic development financing entities: the New York State Urban Development Corporation and the Job Development Authority.

With MLS having openly said it wants its 20th team to be in New York, the Cosmos have long been considered a leading contender for that expansion club. But with MLS already having settled on Flushing Meadows as its preferred site, and plowing ahead with that location, it begs the question of whether the Cosmos and new co-owner O’Brien have moved on from MLS. They've talked less and less about joining the league, and this could be why.

Officials are have reportedly mulled over various proposals to develop 28 acres of the racetrack property, with Newsday stating a plan submitted last week would be called Elmont Town Crossings, and include a 175-room hotel, restaurants, retail stores and a public park, with the stadium as the centerpiece. Think Camden Yards, if you will.

The idea would pump valuable money into Nassau county's economy, with the NHL's Islanders bolting for Brooklyn as soon as possible. And while Cosmos fans will be happy to have a team and a home, many were longing for that team to be in MLS and that home to be within the five boroughs, where they could reach it via subway, not the LIRR.

While the Cosmos have joined the NASL and return to the field this fall at Hofstra’s 13,000-seat James M. Shuart Stadium, if they intend to build their own stadium, they’ve hired an experienced hand to run the project in Erik Stover.

First Stover built Red Bull Arena, and in November he took over the reigns as Cosmos Chief Operating Officer. His specialty is in facilities, after holding high-ranking senior positions at the NJ Sports and Exposition Authority – overseeing both Giants Stadium and the IZOD Center – and then San Diego’s Qualcomm Stadium.

The Red Bulls hired him as managing director to finally complete their long-anticipated stadium, $200 million, 25,000-seat Red Bull Arenas in Harrison, and to work on the acquisition of Thierry Henry. The stadium opened in 2010, and the French superstar arrived that July. The next summer, Stover was essentially let go.

When Stover parted ways with the Red Bulls last August, he had overseen a 150 percent increase in season ticket holders and watched the team spike from dead last in MLS in attendance to fourth. He was named 2010 MLS Executive of the Year; now he’ll be tasked with building yet another expensive soccer stadium in the area.

If it ever comes to that, I hope the USSF tells FIFA to #### off.

You could read that one of two ways. QPR should be playing better or QPR overpaid for a lot of players. I don't know which is correct.

Yeah, I wouldn't say the Lakers are better than the Clippers.

Yeah, I don't think it relates to what you were talking about. It is interesting though. Back to your point, I think Osasuna would be very competitive in a game with QPR. That is also an easy game to pick on right now if you were trying to make a point. There are always upsets in every league. Trying to point to Osasuna drawing Real (while Real was without two of their best players) as a reason the EPL is better is ridiculous. Next time Norwich beats Man U can I point out that Sevilla would crush Norwich? I also think Malaga, Valencia, and Betis could hang with Spurs, Everton, West Brom. We talk talk hypotheticals all day, but the only true measure we have is Champions League and Europa, and the fact is that the EPL does not perform like a superior league in those competitions. There really is no factual basis to claim the EPL is the superior league of the world. But there are some to claim it isn't.

World Cup qualifier - US vs Costa Rica in Denver March 22nd at ****'s Sporting Goods ParkExcellent Choice - at altitude and March 22nd could be snowing and cold(it could be sunny and warm) - there is quite a Mexican crowd that could show up for the game to root for CR - but not a lot of Costa Rican's in Denver. If tickets go through Rapids and US Soccer - it will be a pretty good US crowd.
I was more hoping for Rio Tinto as I felt they might have a better chance at a 100% US support but in the end Costa Rica was the easiest game to place as they have the least supporters in the US of any of the hex teams and I don't think you have to worry about Mexican fans spending money to cheer for CR. I don't think that is going to have an affect. The altitude at DSG is certainly going to help with the transition to the Azteca a few days later. It goes with out saying with the difficult start to the hex for the US, the CR game is an absolute must win.

Livestrong Park is no more as the deal between KC and Livestrong fell apart. It has been renamed, affective immediately to Sporting Park. Interestingly there is one yellow seat in the stadium dedicated to Lance Armstrong. It would not surprise me if that will be gone soon. This deal, if people recall, was for KC to pay for the Livestrong name on the stadium as a form of charity. From a business point if view though it will now allow KC to sell the naming rights to a new group and generate some significant revenue for the team.

Once I heard that Jupp planned to retire at the end of the season, the Pep to Bayern rumors seemed the most plausible to me. Similarly loaded with talent. Similarly possessed of an "identity" where the team tends to play in a certain way. It will be interesting to see whether Pep changes his system. Not so much whether he allows for a bit more direct play, because I think that's a pretty easy adaptation. But guys like Ribery and Robben and Gomez don't strike me as the type of players who will be as comfortable pressing as much as Barca did. And that's the most underrated aspect of Barca's success, IMO. Yeah, they pass it beautifully, but when they give up the ball, they snap at your heels like angry terriers the second they see a heavy touch.

Very interesting to see Pep @ Bayern. I hope the tv coverage for the Bundesliga improves. Bayern is as old-school arrogant as it gets. There is an incredible air of superiority there and they do not take change very well.

I think it is the best fit out of the big clubs for him to go to and I'm glad he didn't end up at Chelsea or one of the Manchesters. It was clear that the pressures of managing a big, successful club like Barcelona (with the Madrid press in particular) wore on him more each year so it will be interesting to see if the same thing happens in Germany. I always thought it would be cool to see him try to build up a smaller/mid level club. Hopefully it works out well for him.

:goodposting: and they don't even wait for the heavy touch.

they have the best team defense I've ever seen without having many if any defensive players ever on the field. Their commitment to pressuring the ball all over the field and understanding how, where and when to double and collapse the passing lanes is just incredible.

but yeah- if all 10 guys aren't committed to it, the whole thing falls apart.

Pep to Bayern confirmed on a 3 year deal. Wow.
Oh my, I have not been following this too closely outside of he was being talked to by various teams but this pairing caught me off guard. Very cool.I wonder what Mjolnir thinks?
I'm very

Of those three, Ribery is the only one with the foot skill needed to compare to Pep's style. Gomez is pretty much a cherry picker and looks clumsy when dribbling. Robben can play running downhill in the box, but when he loses the ball he's not quick in pursuit. Ribery often plays the entire field and when Alaba is healthy they are a deadly duo the entire length of the left side. I think Schweinsteiger and Müller could benefit greatly from Pep's tutelage and Lahm will fit right in.

Superdraft today.

I saw a handful of college games this year (on TV) and was impressed with the number of guys who looked MLS-ready, especially on the attacking end of things (seems easier to fill the defensive slots with good atheltes... looking at you Wynne). Lots of soccer-smart, highly skilled creative guys out there.

Draft is tomorrow at noon eastern. Streamed on YouTube, espn3.com and mlssoccer.comhttp://www.mlssoccer.com/superdraft/2013

I am less excited about this draft than normal as so many home grown players were signed this year from the academies (which is great), and they are no longer available to be drafted.

I hear you on that- but I don't remember watching college games and seeing this many quality creative attacking guys. That makes it more interesting to me.

QPR completes Loic Remy signingWill this guy help out, or is it just more money wasted? Rumor is the transfer fee is around £8 million.
There were rumors before the season started about him coming over and I almost drafted him. I read a lot of good things about him and seemed like he was a rising star.
His price has dropped dramatically since last year because he can't even break Marseille's first team anymore. He has something like one goal on the season. He will be an improvement over what they currently have, but I don't think he is going to keep them up.
