I gave up on the Congolese after Ghana went up 2-0 just after halftime and switched over to Spurs-Man U. I didn't think DR Congo was capable of scoring two goals in the entire tournament. Of course, it took them only 20 minutes to equalize and the game finished 2-2. At least the EPL game was a good one.

So no one else is watching a historic upset unfold in Düsseldorf? :bag:
Ausburg goes up 3-0 in the 71st and Düsseldorf finally steps on the gas. They score two minutes later and keep battling until they finally put a game tying ball in the net in the 93rd only to be called back on a phantom foul. Two blunders by Düsseldorf's keeper lead to two of Ausburg's 3 goals giving Ausburg it's first away win since April 14th of last year, and more importantly, knocking me out of the Survivor Pool. :sadbanana:

Atlético pulls out yet another won at home, and now sit only 8 points back from Barça. Loos like Falcao pulled a hammy and might be out for a little while. They have a midweek game in the copa del rey against Betis, but have a 2-0 lead and are playing defense quite well right now. Next WE is against Athletic, so that's a much bigger match. What happened with my favorite Catalan team this week? Started one to many CBs? Shoulda played with 10 midfielders.

Started specifically one too many: Pique.

Jozy Altidore is lining himself up for a big $$ transfer with his play this year.

EredivisieAZ Alkmaar F Jozy Altidore: 90 (goals in 55th, 64th, 77th) in 4-1 victory over Vitesse
Hopefully he can keep improving and someday be better than Eddie Johnson.

  Nice to see the US players scoring coming into the Honduras game. Here are some extended highlights. I love Jozy's movement and understanding of space for his second goal. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cwVqUrYavGQ

 maybe if he keeps his up, JK will let him sub in for Alan Gordon in the 88th sometime.

This is good schtick :)But I think we all realize that Jozy has not been bringing it for the US. In his last 14 appearances for the US he has amassed a total of 0 goals and 1 assist. He has not scored for the US since he bagged one against Guadaloupe way back in June of 2011.

Four possibilties: 1) he's really not up to international standards where he can't get by on physical gifts

2) he takes the US National Team less seriously than AZ and really has been slacking

3) he's a bad fit for the style JK wants to play in the attacking third

4) he's had one of those statistically fluky runs that all forwards have from time to time

Of the four I think #2 is the least likely. Which is where my irritation comes from. I just don't believe he's giving anything other than 100% when it means a chance to play in the World Cup. Clint Mathis oozed ####### - I haven't gotten that vibe from Jozy at all.

The other three all seem possible, but he's scoring some pretty classy goals so #1 doesn't ring true either. Especially given the general lack of quality at forward for the U.S.

Combo of #3 and #4 then?

The Dutch first division is always one of the highest scoring leagues and the league is loaded with wide players who provide great service. Jozy benefits from both of those. It is certainly easier for him to score in league play versus say WCQing or a friendly against a very good country. I really would be delighted that if at the end of the Hex, the team has been clearly transitioned to Mikey, Fab and Jozy to carry forward the next 6 years as Landon, Dempsey and Boca did before them.

I am not a big fan of Herc but I know Klinsmann loves him but I don't think he fits well with Jozy, at least up till now. I would love to see Jozy and EJ as a strike force for a while but I think the days of two strikers are gone for the US for a while.

I have said it many times but it takes a very special skill to score as a sub and Herc has proven over the years that he can excel in that role.

His classy goals in league play don't mesh with the sitters he blows as an international. He's certainly improved, but the last USMNT match I saw him play he was pressing. Plus, his work rate is never going to be as high as Hercules'. He's still young, but nothing he's done makes me think he should be an automatic start like Bradley, Dempsey, Howard, Cherundolo, or Cameron.

Wow! I guess the bookies knew what they were talking about.I missed it, but I'll have to see if GOL is replaying it.(just looked and I'll have to watch Hallo Bundesliga to see it. Copa Centroamerica coverage limiting the BL replays.)

Dempsey with a free shot from 5 yards and he bangs it right at the GK
But then he makes up for it. Great game for him.
He played like crap, but made up for it at the end. That's very different than having a great game.
We must have been watching different games.
:goodposting: http://i.minus.com/ibo9nOyy5b6mTn.gif
:goodposting: That was the busiest and most involved I've seen Dempsey for Spurs. He wasn't perfect, but thought he put his stamp on the game even before the goal. Constantly working and finding the seams and the ball. Deserved the goal.

And that 1v1 the GK saved earlier... I guess I'd need to see it again. Seemed like he got through and hit his shot pretty bang-bang- and forced the GK to make a kick-save; not exactly right at the GK IIRC- even if he probably should have done better burying it.

And since when did Bale get a right foot?

The US German based players appear to be dropping like flies. Jones is hurt, Cherundolo hurt his knee and missed this weeks game and Chandler was subbed in second half on Sunday with some sort of head injury.

Edu got into the game this week for Bursapor in Turkey as a second half sub. From reading reports he played well including almost scoring from long range, found the highlight belowhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=okKG1ag0RwA#t=03m24s

Bradley drew a PK against Inter and Totti converted to draw 1-1 vs. Inter. Love seeing him get so much quality playing time. He is a bit of a beast in Fifa this year as well.

Only four goals total in their last 3 games? What's going on? That's usually like the first 15 minutes of any given Roma game.

Fun game in Africa this morning, I got to see most of the second half.*Defending champions Zambia taking on Ethiopia.*Crowd is almost 90% for Ethiopia*Ethiopia misses PK in first half, followed by their keeper getting a red card.*Zambia takes lead in injury time of first half.*Ethiopia draws level in second and then holds on for an unlikely draw.*5 games so far and 4 of them have been drawn in tournament.*Ethiopia has a player named Fuad Ibrahim who grew up in Minnesota and played a bit in MLS for Toronto FC.

Crazy Group C match in the African Nations Cup. Ethiopia missed a penalty, had their keeper red carded and carried off on a stretcher after a ridiculous karate kick, scored a short handed equalizer and defended like lions for the last half hour against the champion Zambians. The pitch somehow managed to be both rock hard and have a loose surface. The players and their home clubs won't be happy about that

I did not see the first half. Is this to mean the keeper hurt himself while getting red carded for a karate kick? :lmao:

Either that or he faked injury in an attempt to gain the official's sympathy. Or maybe something else entirely. It is African football after all.

It was probably a touch too early for his annual "I am hurt and can't play for the US in a cap tieing match anyway"
AMSTERDAM – Timothy Chandler is set to return to FC Nürnberg training on Tuesday after an exam showed that he did not suffer a concussion during Sunday's 1-1 draw with Hamburg. The US international was pulled in the 65th minute after being struck in the head from close range by a shot on goal."We thought at first that he might have a concussion," FCN press liaison Luana Valentini told MLSsoccer.com following Monday's all-clear. "We expect him to be back in training tomorrow. He did not train today, but it was just to be safe."Thus far this season Chandler has started all 18 league games for Der Club. Currently standing eight points above the drop zone in 15th place, Nürnberg will get back to action with Friday's Bundesliga trip to holders Borussia Dortmund.

I don't want to chase players that don't want to play for the US anyway. I don't expect them to be gung-ho USA, but following them around like a puppy while they dodge call-ups hoping for a shot at Germany is demeaning. Let them roll the dice on Germany if that's what they really want.I'm not against allowing them to play if they choose to, but put the onus on them. I would rather let other prospects get time with the national team up until these players agree to make a committment.

'Good said:
19Rubio RubinAGE: 16 DOB: 1/1/96CLUB (COUNTRY) U.S. U-17sPOS: FRating U-17 prospects is a dangerous game, but Rubin has been too impressive of late with the U-17s to overlook. He tore up defenses for the likes of Portugal, Turkey and Brazil at the recent Nike Friendlies, and has turned into a leader in attack for Richie Williams' U-17 national team.
I have talked about this kid a few times the last 14 months or so and I really like his game. So fluid. He is in the Portland Timbers academy system and I would love to see him turn pro after the U17 WC if the US qualifies in April.

Burkina Faso equalized against ten man Nigeria on the last kick of the game.Nigeria was the more dangerous team throughout with Obi Mikel looking dominant in midfield. But they never could put BF away and went a man down when Efe Ambrose got his second yellow. They were still in position for the three points in the last minute of injury time but Nigeria foolishly went for goal instead of taking the ball to the corner to waste time. Burkina Faso took the ball back on the break and got into the Nigerian area. The cut back in the box wasn't the best but the Nigerian defensive trio of Larry, Curly and Moe allowed Alain Traore to drive home the equalizer.

Anybody else notice Walcott was on the wing again after signing his contract?
Walcott's typically rotated inside/outside on the right, as an inside forward at times and then a wing. He really isn't effective as a lone central striker in a 4-5-1, and Giroud's presence typically helps him as Giroud's very good laying the ball off and creating space. They really need to play a 4-4-2 with those two in there, but that takes away from either their width or else their strength in the CM. It's a bit of a dilemma.

Walcott needs to be in spots where he has space in front of him so he can use his pace. As a withdrawn guy behind Giroud, it's not going to work. Up higher, making those diagonal runs (that he was offsides on over and over until the goal) definitely works better, but means Giroud has to float back- which isn't froggy's best role. Or he stays wide or makes the diagonals wide- which seems to have been his bread and butter over the years (and how Lennon plays for Spurs). If Walcott is THE guy for Arsenal, then they need to get him into space with a complementary player next to him. Maybe it's as simple as playing the 4-4-2 like Bell says- but with the 2 guys playing flatter

Looks like Landon is coming back eventually.

CARSON, Calif. -- Los Angeles manager Bruce Arena said Landon Donovan will "definitely" return to the Los Angeles Galaxy this season. Exactly when that might occur remains unclear.Speaking to reporters on the first day of preseason practice, Arena revealed that he had talked to Donovan on Sunday evening and that the Galaxy attacker is intent on returning this season after hinting during the previous campaign that he might retire or at least take an extended break from the game."We've given [Donovan] a little more time off," Arena said. "He's definitely playing this year. We're just working out the return date that makes sense for all of us."Donovan wasn't the only player not present for the first day of preseason training. All told, 12 other players were also absent for a variety of reasons.

Could happen, could happen. Maybe Torres heads back home and Atlético pockets 30m€.
