B/c there is something to be said of intent. Not to mention, most slide tackles the guy is aware of the defender, Nani had no idea where the guy was. Here if Fifa's interpretation of foulsRut - RohStuds were showing outDifference in that and a slide with cleats in same position?
I'm not sure how you can call that "excessive force"“Careless” means that the player has shown a lack of attention orconsideration when making a challenge or that he acted without precaution.• No further disciplinary sanction is needed if a foul is judged to be careless“Reckless” means that the player has acted with complete disregard to thedanger to, or consequences for, his opponent.• A player who plays in a reckless manner must be cautioned“Using excessive force” means that the player has far exceeded the necessaryuse of force and is in danger of injuring his opponent.• A player who uses excessive force must be sent of

I am not a ref but I could not see any intent there at all. At best you give a yellow for studs up. But it is not like Man U has not got a call in their favor once or twice over the years so these things have a way of evening themselves out.Not worst, mainly b/c soccer is littered with terrible red cards, but definitely up there.Twitter makes it sound like this is the worst red card in the history of soccer...

• No further disciplinary sanction is needed if a foul is judged to be careless
"Reckless" means that the player has acted with complete disregard to the
danger to, or consequences for, his opponent.
• A player who plays in a reckless manner must be cautioned
"Using excessive force" means that the player has far exceeded the necessary

Cleats first, chest-high is excessive force (he was also leaping). I think people are letting the bias of the announcers influence them here. It was a border-line call, but the red was always possible for that. You can tell the referee talked to his linesman so I'm guessing they might have deduced intent. I'm not sure it was required for the red though.B/c there is something to be said of intent. Not to mention, most slide tackles the guy is aware of the defender, Nani had no idea where the guy was. Please don't give Arsene more talking points."Well, I sink that no ozer English team advance in Champions League, so ve are up vere with ze best!"** I'm not in the Fire Wenger camp, but I think his press conferences keep getting more ridiculous.Assuming Arsenal does not pull off a small miracle in Munich, this will be the first CL quarter finals with out an English team since 1995-1996 when Blackburn was the loan English representative into the CL group stage.
He really did. He was outstanding today.Lopez has had a fantastic game in net.
Well considering everyone else in the studio also thought it was bad, it isn't just one over the top announcer. I am quite capable of making my own decision as well. It was very harsh. Guy was following the ball with his eyes. Seemingly had no idea where the defender was. And such a close call like that, you can't call that unless you know what you saw in a game like this.Cleats first, chest-high is excessive force. I think people are letting the bias of the announcers influence them here. Ok, Piers.I was watching the game without volume, there was no bias in me that thought that straight red was a terrible call there. You want to show him the yellow, that's fine. It wasn't as if Nani had been playing out of control all game long.I don't think you know wtf you're talking about.Cleats first, chest-high is excessive force (he was also leaping). And Germany will more than likely have 3 teams in the quarters. England could drop to 3rd in the coefficients pretty soon. Of course 3rd still comes with 4 spots, but it seems not that long ago that the Champions League was basically the FA Cup plus Barca.Assuming Arsenal does not pull off a small miracle in Munich, this will be the first CL quarter finals with out an English team since 1995-1996 when Blackburn was the loan English representative into the CL group stage.

It would take a few years of bad performances to do that. There is quite a history built into those coefficients.Edit: I'm thinking fourth. It's certainly possible they slip to third. There hasn't been much between Germany and England for a few years. And Germany will more than likely have 3 teams in the quarters. England could drop to 3rd in the coefficients pretty soon. Just caught a YouTube clip of the foul, not at all what I expected given the reaction.Cleats first, chest-high is excessive force (he was also leaping). They're already third in this year's coefficient. And Germany will more than likely have 3 teams in the quarters. England could drop to 3rd in the coefficients pretty soon. I lol'd because I can hear his voice saying this."Well, I sink that no ozer English team advance in Champions League, so ve are up vere with ze best!"*
Jose must really enjoy Sir Alex's wine collection.Independent of the decision, the best team lost. We didn't deserve to win.
[unimaginative ManU joke]We all thought it was curious to bench Rooney. Turns out benching Howard Webb was the bigger mistake.[/unimaginative ManU joke]

The straight red on Zlatan was much worse imo, but obviously much less relevant to the tie. The call today on Nani was harsh, but well into the grey area where a red is possible.I wonder if it's worse than the straight red on Zlatan at the end of the Valencia game. I thought that was absurd.
I thought Zlatan's was worse. Cleats up on a shin is how you break a bone. That was much more reckless than Nani's in my opinion. If Arbeloa isn't there, Nani makes that play fine just like tons of people bring that ball down. Sure, that makes it a reckless challenge but that could have happened to anyone. The straight red on Zlatan was much worse imo, but obviously much less relevant to the tie. Guy is killing some enjoyment.
Was the ref Turkish?Pretty sure I've told this story before, but when I was 13, I had a guy go studs up into my chest, and I got red carded.
Now that you mention it, there was a whiff of clove cigarettes on the field. Was the ref Turkish?Pretty sure I've told this story before, but when I was 13, I had a guy go studs up into my chest, and I got red carded.
