>Four players are carrying yellow cards: Michael Bradley, Dempsey, Maurice Edu and Zusi. Their next caution will result in a one-match suspension.Good god. Imagine if Dempsey and Bradley pick up yellows against CR? The experience level of the team in Mexico would be very low.
You wonder if they would be better off getting yellows against CR and get the inevitable suspension out of the way. Even with them all in the line-up I don't like their chances for a result in Azteca.
Do the yellows carry out through all the hex or do they clear at some point if you go X games with no yellow?

Here is an fun stat from Soccer America on the cursed US position

LB has notoriously been a weak spot for the US up until this cycle.

During this qualifying cycle, 4 different players have started at left back.

Gringo, Fab, Parkhurst and Boca.

None of the 4 are even on the roster for the next two games.

Pulling the trigger on CR. At least some good might come of this.
They have odds for the @Mexico match yet?
Mexico even, Honduras +220, draw +210.
I think may have meant US @ Mexico. Mexico is away to Honduras this week and hosts US next week.
Yeah that's what I was looking for, sorry should have beeb more specific. Having said that and maybe it's a sucker bet but I really like Mexico at even money there. They need a win after that draw against Jamaica. Looks like Honduras is going to have that game during the middle of the day, at least they're consistent.

What time was the Honduras US game? I see that Telemundo is showing the Honduras Mexico game at 5:00pm eastern and they are listing it as live. I thought the US game was earlier than 5:00pm when they played last.

I think it was just an hour earlier but I could be off. I would also be surprised if Honduras observes Daylight Savings Time so it's basically the same time if I remember correctly.

Yeah, DST is probably why I am confused. Thanks :thumbup:

Has Costa Rica ever won in the US?
Sorry, I missed this before. Yes, 4 times. Last time was Klinsmann's second game in charge back in 2011On the flip side, and another reason Friday is so important, the US has never won a game in Costa Rica in 9 tries (8 losses and 1 draw).

This really sucks. I think we're going to get thumped on Friday. Inexperienced D and a group that just has never gelled as an offensive unit. Barring some sort of herculean performance of Dempsey or Altidore, I don't see how we win.

It does not look good. And the performances we need may have to come from unexpected sources (a Guzan, an Edu, a Sacha, someone like that). I liked someone's twitter comment today that at least Guzan knows what playing behind a paper thin defense is like :)Hopefully Twellman is right and some players will take advantage of this massive opportunity some of them are going to get. Games like these two give chances for players to grab and hold on to spots.

Seriously? I feel like we are getting punked here.

“The foot … it’s getting there,” said Shea, who walked at times with a slight but noticeable limp during the team’s session. “I came back early and I’ve been able to play, but obviously it still bothers me a little bit. But I can play, and I want to be in here. I’ve been gone for awhile.”

Here is a good high level analysis of Costa Rica's strengths and weaknesses from a fan on Big Soccer.

=============================

Probable Costa Rica line-up:

-------------------------------------Keylor Navas (Levante, Spain)--------------------------------------

-----------------Michael Umaña (Saprissa)--Geancarlo González (Valerenga, NOR)-----------------

Cristian Gamboa (Rosenborg, NOR)----------------------------------Bryan Oviedo (Everton, ENG)

-------------Michael Barrantes (Aalesunds, NOR)-- Celso Borges (AIK, SWE)------------------------

----------------------------------------Bryan Ruiz (Fulham, ENG)--------------------------------------

Christian Bolaños (Copenhagen, DEN)--------------------------------Joel Campbel (Real Betis, SPA)

-----------------------------------------Álvaro Saborío (RSL, USA)--------------------------------------

Our strengths:

- Ruiz, on his day, is a creative and dangerous player. Can break most defenses with through passes and shots from a distance.

- Saborío is a proven goalscorer. You guys know him well.

- Speed on the flanks. Oviedo, Bolaños, Gamboa and Campbell are all extremely quick players. Speed on the flanks is our main weapon.

- Keylor Navas is on a great run of form. He could be a match-saver if Costa Rica needs him.

Our weaknesses:

- Umaña is a really slow CB. If the US manage to spring an offside trap on the center, we could be in deep trouble.

- Ruiz-dependency to hold on to the ball. Panamá had us broken for 30 minutes because Ruiz just didn't want to show up. When he finally got into the match, the flow changed. Hampering Ruiz = Hampering CR's creativity.

- Barrantes and Borges can give away the ball easily when the opponent presses too hard on the midfield. You could recover the ball on some dangerous positions thanks to that.

- Oviedo and Gamboa are offensive full-backs by nature. That could leave us exposed.

The Honduras Mexico match should be interesting. Mexico has not won a qualifier in Honduras since 1993 and is on a 4 game losing streak in Honduras on qualifiers losing twice down there in the 2010 cycle.

A draw from this game would be a nice result for US fans.

What a disaster of a lineup. I think that LD went on a vision quest and saw the future of the USMNT and didn't want to tarnish his legacy as the best USMNT player ever.

Going back to the 1998 cycle (there was no 1994 cycle), the US has played at Jamaica, at Mexico, and at Costa Rica 14 times combined.

The US has a grand total of 0 wins in those 14 road games. This is one of the many reasons this Friday's game is so critical.

The slight good news though is that they have played in Jamaica 5 times and only lost once (managed 4 draws down there). Of course the only loss was in the most recent cycle in the last round.

I still think that this is a talented lineup. And as noted soccer expert Robert Griffin III would say, "no pressure, no diamonds."

I don't mind putting some heavy pressure on Gonzo and Cameron and possibly blooding a new guy (and I think Morrow is a better player than Bornstein was). Necessity is the mother of invention. For all we know, this is the moment when Joe Corona announces his presence in the international game. Or that Bradley and Jones show they can play the double pivot. Or that Gonzo proves himself to be the center back he seems to have the physical skills to be. Or that Jozy puts it all together (JK might be forced to field a lineup designed to get Jozy service in space).

It would be nice to have Donovan. And Johnson (although I'd actually like to find someone else for LB and play Fabian in a more attacking role as I still think he's a talented attacking player who can play some fullback more than a natural fullback based on what I've seen with the Nats and the Hoff). I'm looking forward to Friday. This is a chance to find some new leaders. I fully expect Bradley to play like he has a pine marten down his shorts.

Very detailed analysis of the CR game from The Shin Guardian. Might be an interesting game as both team's percieved strengths and weaknesses are very similar. I think the US has the better engine in midfield, which should turn the game.

Ruiz, Saborio, and Campbell, however, are kind of terrifying.

I'm with Ramsay. Minus the pine marten.

I feel like the guys we have know already they have to come out and play now and there's a 0% chance they're complacent like they were in Honduras. Wouldn't be surprised if they summon up a strong performance.

hopefully the expected cold weather will have a similar affect on the CR players as the Honduran weather had on the US players. If it reduces some of the speed advantage CR has on the wings, that might be enough to get the 3 points.I am sure Campbell, for one, is hardly accustomed to playing in snow like conditions in Sevilla.By game time it is expected to be in the 30's and rainy.

If Jozy, Herc, EJ, and Demps can get on the same page tactically, that's a pretty powerful strike / attacking midfield set of players. All are in form and scoring for their clubs, so CR should see danger across their backline and defensive midfield. This could be a trap game for them. They are seeing away points, but if they come out of the shell they may get exposed by the USMNT attack.

The tactics CR employs are going to be fun to observe. Almost to a man their fan was based seemed assured that the team would bunker and counter with their superior speed on the wings. But once all the injuries started to crush the US side, they all started to question whether the bunker/counter was the right approach.One key place is the Ruiz Bradley midfield general role. So much of CR possession game is hinged upon Ruiz keeping the ball safe. He plays deeper for CR than he does in the EPL. If Bradley can greatly outplay Ruiz (who was invisible in the Panama game until near the end when he woke up and helped the team get the undeserved draw), I think the US has a good chance at the 3 points.All MLS fans will remember Umana, who makes Alexi Lalas look like Usain Bolt. Umana struggled at two MLS sides, at Galaxy where he did not even last a season and at Chivas where he marshaled a backline that led to one of the worst defenses in the league. If the US can get Johnson or Jozy to match up with him one on one in a couple of chances during the game, both will be able to blow by him. Obviously CR knows this so the likelihood of that happening is small, but if they do come out of their shell to attack, the US might get a chance to exploit that weakness.

This is one reason why I hope the U.S. goes 4-4-2. I don't want Jozy outnumbered by CBs waiting for service. I want him to be able to drop back if needed, get the ball at his feet, and run at people. That's the part of his game that has grown by leaps and bounds in the last 18 months. And I just don't buy the argument that those opportunities don't exist in the international game. I'd rather see EJ as a sub and Dempsey on the left than see EJ on the left in a 4-3-3. I don't think they can mark Jozy out of the game with Herc beside him.

Anyone else annoyed that the US and Mexico are the only concacaf teams in Fifa 13? When I'm nervous about a game I like to plsy the game on Fifa with the difficulty dumbed down and smoke the other teams. Makes me feel better. Tried to do it for Honduras amd noticed no other concacaf teams in the game. :kicksrock:

LOL. I'm such a crappy player that I always play with the difficulty fairly low. Which is how Stefan Junker, the pacey German middlefielder who looks remarkably like me minus about 80 pounds, is averaging 1.5 goals and 1 assist per game for Arsenal.And yeah, I sometimes get annoyed at the lack of worldwide coverage, but I imagine it makes more sense to cover the lower divisions in the big European countries. Seems weird to not have the full Greek league, for instance.

Really rough article re Klinsmann by Brian Strauss at Sporting News today. It sucks when the criticsm is all from anonymous players, but much of it rings true and is consistent with our concerns over the past several years since he was hired.

"Have you read Philipp Lahm's book?"

Ouch!

Reading now. Ugh.
Over the past several weeks, Sporting News has spoken to 22 individuals with ties to the U.S. national team or its members—including 11 current players based in MLS or abroad. The remaining sources make their living in American soccer and have reliable relationships with players, coaches and executives. Sources were offered anonymity in exchange for their anecdotes, observations and opinions. Those identified by name are Klinsmann and three players who spoke shortly before Sporting News commenced reporting this story.

Said an unnamed player whose name rhymes with Cleve Ferundolo.Some of this is scary. With that said, JK seems to expect the players to be able to solve tactical problems themselves. Which means that Bradley or whoever should just step up and do it, I guess. Dempsey went to Bradley and told him he needed to be played closer to the goal. If there are defensive organization problems or if Bradley doesn't trust Jones or Williams or whatever, he should feel he's earned the stroke to go and tell Klinsmann the partnership he thinks will work.

Thanks for the link, that was a fascinating and ultimately depressing article (depressing because it appears to ring true). Here are some snippets that had me nodding my head in agreement

" A different player said that at halftime of the qualifier in San Pedro Sula, with the U.S. fortunate to be level at 1-1, Klinsmann, “Didn’t really say that much. Just, ‘C’mon, we’ve got to win this game. They scored an unbelievable (tying) goal, and we can’t do anything about that. We’re going to win this game.’ It was never, ‘We need to do this. We need to change this.’ ”

That same player continued, “It’s always motivational. He’s a great motivator. He can make you feel you’re better than what you are.”

==========

One asked why the 4-4-2 formation that was so effective against Slovenia in the fall of 2011 hasn’t been used more often. A second player wondered how 14 months later the U.S. could look so disjointed in January’s scoreless draw against Canada after spending nearly three weeks together. Another asked why the U.S. is 1-2-1 in road World Cup qualifiers under Klinsmann, despite taking the lead in all four.

===========

And a fourth posed the biggest question of all: Is the U.S. even ready to play the style Klinsmann wants to see?

“They want us to play the beautiful game, but we’re not a technical team like the Germans. We’re not Spain or Brazil,” the player said. “What we’re good at is we work hard, we fight and we compete. We have great athletes and we’re a good counterattacking team. Maybe we need to go back to what we’re good at.”

===========

<This is just awful>

The divide is clear, deepening and international. For several U.S. born players, the increasing stature of Jermaine Jones, Danny Williams, Fabian Johnson and Chandler (and to a far lesser extent, Terrence Boyd)—all German born sons of American servicemen—is harming team chemistry.

“They stay to themselves. Jermaine is the leader, and the rest of them follow him,” one player said. “I don’t know if they don’t care."

“It’s like they’re here and they enjoy it, but they don’t care as much as you should to play for the national team,” said another player.

===========

“Things are boiling over,” a source said. “The feeling now is that this is (Klinsmann’s) last chance against Costa Rica.”

ok I will ask the question.

If the US loses both of the next games and has 0 points going into the June qualifiers, does Klinsmann get fired?

Should Klinsmann get fired under such a situation?
