The reported amount is just what Barca paid Santos. There's more to it than that. That's what I assume Perez is alluding to.

I don't know all of the particulars, but Barca paid Santos several years ago to get right of first refusal. Had Santos sold him to another team, they would've owed Barca a 40mm penalty, I believe.

Neymar also had one year left on his contract, which reduced the price that Barca ultimately paid. Similar to ManU's deal for RVP.

I had an idea today that it'd be kind of cool and made depth charts in this thread for a lot of (as many as possible) of the big European clubs, updated regularly. We may have to split up some and not everyone would get their favorite teams. Maybe devote one full page to them. I dunno.

Seems like the silly season is in full swing already.

Eric Abidal with a tearful goodbye to his fellow players today as his contract will not be renewed. Hopefully he finds a place that he can get some more playing time now that he is healthy.

Here's some more details:

However, according to AS, Barca may have paid as much as €72m, with €32m going to the Peixe to then be split with the two investment funds that also part-owned the player.

Then a further €40m signing on fee is apparently due to the player and his father, who have already received €10m as part of a pre-contract agreement signed last summer.

Real Madrid’s late interest reportedly forced the Liga champions to spend more than planned, with Los Blancos apparently willing to pay Santos €30m, Neymar and his father €60m, and Barca themselves as much as €50m to cater for the pre-contract agreement.

My Atleti are trying hard to get Courtois for another year. He's been great this season, winning the Zamora (best goalie in la liga) and at one point played 819 minutes without letting in a goal at home. I'm not sure what Chelsea will do, or whether Courtois wants to stay in Madrid, but CL experience doesn't come too often when on loan at a young age, and he's still not likely to be Chelsea's number 1 either. I hold out hope for a permanent deal, but I'm not sure that's ever in the cards with him.

I'm kind of sad to see Tony Pulis go, although he's certainly had enough time in the job. Styles make fights and Pulis and Big Sam are the only two top-tier managers who favor old-fashioned direct soccer. I'm an old Wimbledon fan so my idea of what's beautiful are different.

Twenty teams stringing short passes together with varying degrees of success is almost as boring as twenty teams chucking long balls. Variety is good and there was no mistaking Pulis' Stoke teams while you were watching them.

Mark Hughes is a horrible replacement. He's a retread who's ruined clubs with a lot more resources than the Potters.

I think this is a very difficult dilemma for Chelsea. Cech is 31, no Spring chick but still playing at a very high level. Courtois is under contract for 3 more years, so it's not urgent yet but they need to have a good plan in place to maximize their good fortune in his rapid development into a world class GK. Perhaps interesting to recall that it was Mourinhos first season at Chelsea when Cech replaced Cudicini, who at the time was maybe a year removed from being EPL goalkeeper of the year. I think Cech was 22 and Carlo was approx 31 at the time, so the circumstances are strangely similar.

It's good fortune for both Altético and Chelsea here.

Someone explain this to me, as I really dont understand how Barca can secure Neymar for so little...

http://www.goal.com/en/news/12/spain/2013/05/28/4009541/neymar-would-have-cost-real-madrid-150m-says-perez?ICID=OP

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has revealed that Neymar would have cost the club €150 million had they secured the services of the Brazil international.

The Santiago Bernabeu side were keen to lure the 21-year-old to the Spanish capital ahead of the 2013-14 campaign, but the player eventually snubbed los Blancos in favour of a move to Barcelona.

"Neymar would have cost the club €150 million," Perez told Cadena Ser.

"We had the chance to sign him three years ago, but there were lots of conditions now."
It was discussed a few pages back.

Mourinho is such a petty D-bag. He leaves Iker off the list of players to play against Osasuna, even though Diego López is out due to a surgery. Adan is starting and some schmo is his backup. Iker is healthy and was called into La Roja and will start for them, but he's not good enough for Mourinho's Real Madrid.

I hope he takes an *accidental* boot to the taint wherever he ends up next. No doubt that club will elevate in hate for me when he arrives.

Preach, Brother

He is so awful it almost makes me feel bad for Real Madrid...Thankfully it looks like he is going to Chelsea.

I actually do feel bad for them. For about 3 seconds until I remember that they have an unlimited bankroll and have conspired with Barça to make a 2 party system out of a multi-tier club pyramid with 100s of teams.

If I don't stand up for outdated, negative, unsuccessful tactics, who will?

Gotta agree with Z on this one. I love the sport but it pisses me off that so much is concentrated in so few teams. I'm pretty much a socialist when it comes to sports. The NFL should be the model for all professional sports leagues.

The DFB Pokal Final between Bayern and Stuttgart will be shown live on ESPN NEWS and ESPN3 starting at 1:45 eastern on Saturday. Univision is showing it as well and shows the start time at 2pm.

Bayern going for the Treble!

He's gutless. Honestly, I think Chelsea can do better.

Shame to see Depor go down again, but don't feel bad about Zaragoza joining them. Mallorca also on the way down.

Sociedad sneaks into the CL over Valencia....although some questionable calls in Sevilla.

Celta de Vigo stays up, really fun team/club they have.

Chelsea jumps up in the haterade rankings.

Let's see if he let's Curtuois go on loan again, or if he'll **** over my boys. Also will be interesting to see what happens with the striker position there.

How long do you guys think a deal has been done? I heard Nick Saban called him and demanded his shtick back. What a classles #####.

Deal was probably in place for weeks. Ever since real was eliminated for the la liga race, I'm sure he knew his time was numbered in Madrid.

Also, the hatred stems from Mourinho being probably the biggest egomaniac in soccer, which says a lot. He has no problem burning anyone at any time.

I really hope the team doesn't look as disjointed today as it did against Belgium and Honduras. I'm a freak Colorado snowstorm and a fortunate draw in Azteca from being convinced the wheels are coming off as it is. When was the last really strong performance?

Is it just me, or does Jozy look slimmer than ever before? Maybe it's the result of being fresh off a full Euro season, but could it be some kind of renewed commitment to fitness/nutrition? That's not to say he was overweight before, but he's always seemed a bit bulkier than he looks now.
