Who are the best team in the world, right now - either club or national?
It's certainly going to be a club, and I'd figure most people would say either Bayern or Barca; Real Madrid and Chelsea probably would get some mentions by some, and maybe Man City too. Funny enough, all have new managers.

The USMNT is riding a 13 game winning streak (not unbeaten streak, winning streak). That is the longest such streak in the world, by either club or country. That makes us the best team in the world right now.

That was my broader question - but I was curious how one of the top national sides matched up against a team like Barca, RM, Bayern, etc.

Kind of weird that with so many of us in here we have no Real Madrid fans or Man City fans.

When I first got into the EPL last year, I was kind of rooting for Man City just because of Balotelli. Then he left and Chelsea swept me off my feet!

It's very much open to debate, but typically the best side in the world will be a club team, with some great national sides interspersed. The club teams have players all year every year and they gel in ways that the international teams simply can't. Not coincidentally, a lot of the top national teams that you could argue were the best in the world at a given point typically had/have a lot of players who were also playing together for club teams, an example arguably being Spain over the last four years with its heavy Barcelona influence, or the Dutch "total football" team which was centered around a core of players out of Ajax.

In the last 20 years the only international sides worth mentioning as the best would be Spain of the last 4-5 years and France circa 1998-2000. Even they, however, had holes and flaws.

My list above focused on clubs only after my initial comment that it would have to be a club team, but that Spanish side would have to be in the top 3.

Does Man City actually have fans?
City was my Champ Manager go-to team after they'd been relegated in the late 90s. Kinkladze, Uwe Rosler and Nicky Weaver were a solid core and they still had enough reputation to make acquiring talent easier than the typical second division straggler. I have one of the laser blue Kappa shirts which is suitable for retro Britpop nights.

I have some friends from Manchester who are die hards so they get a pass on the parvenu factor. Their Facebook celebrations on the last day of the 2011-12 season were memorable. Ticket prices at the CoM are pretty reasonable compared to Old Trafford or the big London clubs. Bonus points awarded for the Poznan.

Juventus with 3 goals in 5 minutes against Lazio in the Italian Super Cup on the way to a 4-0 win. Lichtsteiner with a tremendous scoring run with the help of a Vucinic give and go back heal. I have hope in the Champions League if they can find an in form striker duo. Lorrente isn't fit and/or isn't fitting in so far. Tevez got a goal but hasn't looked sharp. Serie A begins on the 24th.

Despite the SD Bein feed, I will watching every game this year especially since I don't get GolTV (BVB) and Wolves are in league one (7 points in 3 matches so far).

I watched the second half of the Sunderland / Fulham match on OnDemand this afternoon. I was curious because I had read such diverse opinions of Altidore's game and I worried that American fans were being homerific.

I was wrong. Altidore's hold up play was incredible. I've never considered it a strength of his, but he consistently shielded the centerback off, won balls and played diagonal or lateral balls to the streaking wingers (who largely proceeded to butcher crosses, but still). At one point, Jozy turned Hangeland at the top of the 18 with a perfect touch (his first touch was silky all half) and got off a shot that went about a foot wide. It was a really nice bit of skill. If I were to complain, I'd say that Jozy didn't get goal side of defenders and attack some crosses, but that was largely a function of being the only guy in the middle. I think Sunderland would be well served going with a 4-4-2 when Fletcher gets back (particularly considering that Larsson was total dog crap at CM).

Even without a goal, I'm more convinced that Jozy has double digit league goals in him. He made too much happen against a pretty good CB in Hangeland for me to believe otherwise.

Where were you able to see highlights of him? Has someone put together a game compilation of his touches?

I watched the entire second half. On Comcast/Xfinity, at least, all the NBC BPL games go on ON Demand so you can watch them whenever you want that week. All the Saturday games were cut so that you could watch the first half or the second half. I watched the second half. It was pretty sweet.

Violent disorder charges made after Tyne-Wear derbyTwenty-four people have been charged with violent disorder following trouble at April's Tyne-Wear derby.

A total of 106 people were arrested after the Newcastle v Sunderland match at St James' Park, Newcastle.

Bottles were thrown and bins set on fire as mounted officers tried to move crowds back to allow visiting fans to be escorted to Metro and rail services.

Those charged include 10 youths and Barry Rogerson, 45, of Bedlington. He is accused of punching a police horse.

All are due to appear at Newcastle Magistrates' Court on 9 September.

They are subject to bail conditions preventing them from attending any Newcastle United football matches.
How drunk would you have to be?

At the moment, Bayern is first and Dortmund second. Really no arguing the point imo after what we saw last Spring.

They just reminded everyone that Messi scored 46 league goals last year. It's easy to take that for granted when you see him play all the time, but it's completely ridiculous.

From that table I posted earlier... 46 goals is 18 more than the most anyone's scored in a single season in England in the last five years (RVP and Drogba both on 28). That's crazy.
The last couple years I think the top two in Spain have scored 110-120 goals each, while the third place team has been 50-60 goals back. A club can still win a championship in England, Italy or Germany scoring 80-90 goals.

I know weve discussed this before, but does anyone have a good link for a store where I can be low-priced replica soccer jerseys? Looking for EPL and maybe USMNT.

TIA

All three of those leagues are more competitive, hence the smaller goal differentials. If you threw a forward like RVP or Lewandowski on the front of either one of those teams they would end up with 10+ more goals every season.

I think Messi and Ronaldo are clearly the two best players in the world, but the amount of goals they rack up against the lower teams is a bit ridiculous. The lack of TV revenue sharing in La Liga makes the bottom feeders true cannon fodder.

Anyone ever ordered from here?

http://dreamsoccerjerseys.com

Very good deals - $20 for a nice kit. Looking to buy a Chelsea home jersey. They can add a number/name for only $1 extra. Ive narrowed it down to the following four players:

1. Zola

2. Essien

3. Hazard

4. Oscar

Thoughts? CM? Others?

Heh yeah I was kidding. I know there's plenty of Manchester lifers who are probably still living in shock with what's happened in the past 5 years. I can't even imagine how awesome it must be for them.

Scorchy is a City fan. Doesn't post here much though.

My boys came through late in Sevilla, winning 3-1. Sure it's not a 7 goal whooping, but it's a nice 3 points to start the season. I didn't get this to see the game due to family commitments  , but hopefully it's on my DVR. I saw that Costa had a brace. Liverpoool better not snatch him late...

Can't wait to watch the Barca game, but most impressed by the fact that Levante only had one SOG and 22% of possession. Now if they could only nab some CB death before the end of the month...

Honestly, Barça didn't need CBs today. They ran circles around Levante, stringing passes together and generally looking more aggressive in front of the net than I've seen them in a long time. And this was without Neymar in the mix.

Sure one of their midget midfielder / strikers will get hurt or run down, but for now... I sure wouldn't want to face them. Real looked far less dangerous and certainly less cohesive even if they y have talent coming out their ###.

PSG was only able to get a draw earlier today with similar numbers, and they had to rely upon an 85' equalizer.

Barca CB's had to have been picking blades of grass, stretching them between two outstretched thumbs, and then blowing on them to make a kazoo sound.

100% true, although to be fair Levante looked like they were in for a long season anyway. Likely due to gigantic Sergio Ballesteros being let go. :(

Still, there are going to be matches when the back line won't be so untested. But it's a pretty encouraging start, and I've only liked what I've heard out of Martino so far, especially re: pressing. Barca's best defensive weapon is always going to be a forced turnover deep in their opponent's end, or a harried upfield pass that leaves to a turnover.

Falcao rumors heating up. Can't think of a bigger way for Wenger to say #### off to all his critics than to break the bank for that guy.

It would be pretty awesome for Falcao to make the move to Arsenal this transfer season. I don't see that happening simply due to the complexity of the deal and the scale of the numbers being thrown about.

I think it's the most implausible rumor I've heard. Even assuming the rules are changed so that his salary is taxed, I would at least expect Falcao to hang around for a season. He angrily denied Marca's report today.

And from Arsenal's perspective, I continue to think that the #9 position is one of the positions where the team is in decent shape. Arsenal needs backline depth. They probably need CM depth (although I think there are a number of players out there who would do). And I think they particularly need more playmakers to complement Cazorla (look at how many playmakers City and Chelsea have).

I watched about 15 games this weekend, but this was unfortunately one that I missed.

I've pegged Juve to win Serie A comfortably, but have been curious to see how Tevez would work out - only watched one friendly with Tevez and the interplay wasn't exceptionally good. I haven't even seen Llorente play yet, but by all reports it hasn't been good. Matri is totally meh at this point, Juve has swung and missed quite a bit with strikers over the past few years. My kids were playing FIFA yesterday and when DelPiero scored for Juve it brought back fond memories of one of my favorite ever players.

I'm a huge Lichesteiner fan, and Vucinic has been pretty terrific. Of course the entire team is predicated by midfield play. Should be a good season, can't wait for Serie A to start up :towelwave:

Arteta, Ramsey, Rosicky and Wilshere all have playmaking ability. It's the lack of a box-to-box or ball-winning midfielder that's forcing two of them at a time to play deep in a 4-2-3-1 shape.

Again, I strongly disagree with that assessment. Wilshere had never been an attacking mid. He has seven assists in 65 BPL games played. He's played centrally eveywhere he's been. On loan at Bolton. For England. There's absolutely no evidence to support the idea that he can be a creative fulcrum. That's not his game and it never has been.

Arteta began his career as a deep lying midfielder and was converted by Moyes. He played admirably there for Everton, but had already declined in the position by the time Arsenal bought him.

The fact that Arsene is still playing Rosicky in that position tells us a lot about Arsenal's stock of players there. This is a position where Man U has the pick of Rooney or Kagawa. Where Chelsea has Oscar or Mata or De Bruyne. Where City has Silva, Aguero, Jovetic, etc.

:goodposting:

It's going to take a lot for me to believe the French tax rumors are true, let alone that Arsenal would make a move of that magnitude (and beat out Chelsea in the process).

Unless FIFA has changed their rules, or preseason doesn't count, you can only play for two teams in a year.

Edit: Ligue 1 has already started apparently. I don't think he can move.

Falcao has already played in regular season games in Ligue 1.
