So, if the Bale to Real transfer falls through....are Spurs ####ed?

I mean, they've spent so much money in transfers, presuming they would be getting money for Bale, but what happens if at the last moment Real fails to secure financing to send back to London?

Not a full B-team, but most of the top clubs will use this to start at least a couple of squad players and at least one promising reserve team player. This is often even done in the latter round matches. Much depends upon opposition though. If you're up against a League 2 side, you'll usually start more "lesser" players; if you're up against a tough PL opponent then the opposite is true.
It's definitely the least important competition for most PL teams though.

Besides the added TV money this year, Spurs are backed by a billionaire. He just doesn't throw his money around like the rest of them. They're fine either way.

Dortmund's home matches are not to be missed. I'd probably want to catch a game in that stadium more than any other in the Bundesliga just because of the fan atmosphere.

The influx of foreigners started in earnest during the 90s. I remember an old issue of Goal (or 4-4-2) with Zola on the cover that ranked the top 100 foreign born players in England. As I recall, the list dipped into the lower divisions. A similar list today would be five times longer.
The last Wimbledon top level side in 1999-2000 was mostly from the British Isles. There were some English born players who played their international football abroad (including future talking heads Efan Ekoku and Robbie Earle) and a handful of Scandinavians who Drillo brought in with little effect. This was more the rule than the exception in those days. Chelsea was about the only team that was predominantly foreign.

Considering England recently played Ricky Lambert at striker, I'd say the US is pretty well stacked by a lot of other countries' standards, especially with Aron Johansson as well. We're actually good!

I'm mostly just having fun with you.
But I still think your point is kind of silly. Other than Spain, no team in the world right now has "proven it" on the big stage. Italy will have Buffon and Pirlo and maybe another World Cup winner.
Even if we restrict our analysis to teams that we'd expect to have a deep cup run, we're left with a very small group of teams. Spain, Italy, the Netherlands, Brazil, Germany and Argentina.
Other hot teams that we might think are likely to advance are in the same boat as the US. I like Columbia and Belgium, but what have they proven on the big stage? Belgium will be in their first big tournament in a decade. Hell, Argentina hasn't won a Copa America since 93 and hasn't been past the quarterfinals in the World Cup since 1990.
People are excited about the US team because they've won a dozen games in a row. They can only play the games in front of them, and they've won them. Other US teams, even pretty good US teams, haven't been able to do that. If we can't be excited to watch the team or feel better about them in those circumstances, then only the fans of a handful of national teams can. And that would be stupid.

Thumbs down. If the Frings handball is called and LaDon converts one of the opportunities he had in Korea 2002 we'd have played in the semi final round, with only South Korea to beat to reach the final. Two knock-out wins in the minimum for me, as unlikely as that is.

Z, there appears to be a touch of hypocrisy in your statement.You state that you basically don't care/can't enjoy how good the US is playing outside of 2 weeks every 4 years, but you are the very first person to complain about how bad the US is when they are playing poorly. If you don't care how good the US is in the "interstitial phase", why do you care how bad it is during that same time frame?

As a fan, I can never buy into the judging a team on 3 games every 4 years, if for nothing else, you are at the mercy of the draw. Just compare the last two draws for the US for example
2006: They were drawn with the eventual WC winners, a solid second tier Euro side and a top African side
2010: They were drawn with one of the weakest first seeds, one of weakest second tier Euro sides and arguably the weakest African side
The 2014 team might be better (much better) than the 2010 version but if 2014 version of US gets drawn into group of death (something like Argie, Belgium, US, Ivory Coast), they are not likely to get out alive.

As for the 2002 side, I am still amazed to this day how they played against Germany in the quarterfinal, and they deserved that game to at least get into extra time. But I also recognize that that memory is a bit romantic. The US was a pubic hair(maybe thinner) away from being eliminated in the first round if this shot goes in very late in the Portugal-SK game (at the 4min 35 sec mark if the link does not time index)

So many teams still have pieces of Aguedelo, though. It just doesn't seem possible that any buyout will be accepted.

I'm pretty new to all this, if Arsenal doesn't sign someone who, you know, actually costs money will there be any real fan backlash or will people just grumble and keep showing up?
