Zenit lost to a club named "AEL" in Champions League today. I'm feeling sincere pain for Villas Boas now. I've no idea who AEL are.

I think AEL is from Cyprus and they were the other team (besides FK Jagodina) that Freddy Adu was considering. Freddy could have been in the Champions League!
One of the Cypriot teams made it into the groups a few years ago.

ETA: it was APOEL not AEL and the quarters not the groups but I had the country more or less correct.

APOEL made the quarters in 2011-2012. One of the great "WTF?" runs in CL history.

Weird that Everton spent £28M on Origi's backup
Great piece of business for Martinez. No sense in a great striker wasting away on the bench at Chelsea - he belongs in my a starting line-up....now go tell Rodgers to sign Reus before he heads off to ManU or Bayern.
It's going to be interesting to see what else they do. They've spent 28M and still have a smaller squad than last season. They need about 4-5 more players to cope with Europa and start in the top 6

Agreed - I think they are going to struggle to keep up in the league. ( I think Liverpool still needs a few more bodies also to cope with the extra games)

I'm not sure what I think about the price. Looking at other recent deals for attacking players, he's a bit cheaper than Alexis Sanchez and a slightly more expensive than Lallana. From Chelsea's perspective, probably a pretty good return.

Lukaku just turned 21 years old

Sanchez will be 26 and Lallana is 26

(not to mention Lukaku at least a head taller than both of them)

I'll take Lukaku all day every day

Well FIFA now has the perfect scape goat for Qatar.

Julio Grondona, senior vice president of soccer’s governing body FIFA, has died, the Argentine soccer federation said.

Grondona, 82, had been an influential figure in soccer for decades. His appointment in 1979 as head of the sport in Argentina predated the end of the military junta in the South American country.

Grondona died today at Sanatorio Mitre, a hospital in Buenos Aires, after suffering a heart attack, according to La Nacion and Clarin, Argentina’s two biggest newspapers. His passing was confirmed by phone by Alberto Dean, a spokesman for the Argentine soccer federation, known as the AFA.

FIFA President Sepp Blatter said he was close to Grondona, who was chairman of its finance committee.

“This represents a major blow personally, because he was a lifelong friend,” Blatter said on FIFA’s website. “But it is also a huge loss for FIFA as an institution, since he was one of the most important personalities.”

As a member of Zurich-based FIFA’s governing executive committee since 1988, Grondona was involved in decisions including the selection of World Cup host nations. The most recent choices, Russia for 2018 and Qatar in 2022, are being investigated amid allegations of corruption.

There are strong rumors that Miranda might be leaving Atlético for about 25m€ (United and Chelsea have expressed interest). He was a big part of the defense last season, so I'd be really sad to see him go, but that's a good price for a 29 year old center back. He's not as good as Godín, but ti would be a blow nonetheless.

Also, Chicharito and Callejón are still linked to Atlético. I'd much prefer the latter...

The Bakkali move seems nearly done from PSV to Atleti. I don't think I've ever seen him play since I don't follow Dutch football much and he didn't play for Belgium at the WC. Anyone seen him play?

I wouldn't. Sanchez is the best of the bunch, and not by a little.

Tell us, Flops, what do you think of the new Yankee stadium?

Do you hate it more or less than the Mexican national team?

Strongly disagree. If you saw Lukaku at Anderlecht, you watched an 18-19 year old dominating the league.

He is still a bit raw, but shown glimpses of being dominant in the epl.

Lukaku can be twice the player Benteke has become at Villa, who is one of the best young players in the league.

Sanchez is good, but let's face it, he played on a phenomenal team on Barca and in his first two years tallied 26 goals in 97 appearances. While that is decent, let's face it Barcelona scores at a fantastic rate. His last year at Barca was very good indeed and he was very important in stretches with Messi absent, but I don't think he will enjoy similar success at Arsenal. He should fit in well and perhaps be a nice goal scorer....but Lukaku has the ability to be a special player.

Time will tell.

Don't feel like firing up a new thread since I Rarely post outside of the soccer/soccer related threads, but thought I'd post this here.

Our youth baseball team is going to the Cal Ripken World Series in Maryland. Pretty freaking big deal for us around here.

Send Hanford to Maryland

Cool.

Is that a different WS than the typical Little League thing? If so. :loco:

Yes

The Cal Ripken league is played on 70ft bases not 60 like LL and there's leading off, getting to first on passed ball third strike and it's played on bigger fields..."real" baseball.

Fun fact- the second coach from the right is Dennis Springer, the guy who gave up Barry Bonds' 73rd home run.

Lukaku didn't wow me at the world cup. Origi looked better as a striker. Sánchez looked like he was carrying a quality Chile side in attack for a lot of the tournament. He was obviously their top class player. Lukaku was not Belgium's best player by a long shot.

Look, I think the guy has a bright future, but Sánchez is now.

In terms of value to an English club, particularly one playing in Europe, Lukaku gets a bump because he's homegrown and FA trained. Lallana is all that plus he's English, which also adds value.
