***Official Soccer Discussion Thread*** (3 Viewers)

People are getting too wrapped up in this unofficial nicknames stuff.

Except for the Dons of course. That's just wrong.

I don't refer to United as The Reds, but it's not uncommon for a United player to be referred to as a red. There you have it.

I thought people had a problem calling Manchester United just "united". Isn't that a thing too?
No, it's don't call them ManU. It was used by some supporters from other teams after the Munich disaster to mock the team.
I never knew this, and I think I've used ManU frequently online in the past, so will change my ways.
I don't ever say anything because 1. I'm not an old school United fan so I don't really have any experience with it and 2. I don't think most fans even know so they don't mean anything by it.

Soccer hooligans are some nasty people.

ManUre is still acceptable though, right?
Manure is how this whole thing got started.

“Duncan Edwards is manure, rotting in his grave. Man you are manure, rotting in your grave,” so the song goes. Rival fans derived the derogatory “Man U” nickname from the song and began to use it as an insult.

Ah, so now I see.

Good info, I had no idea, but I don't follow the Mancs at OT.

@Football__Tweet: Arsenal starting line up: Szczęsny, Debuchy, Mertesacker, Koscielny, Monreal, Flamini, Ox, Wilshere, Cazorla, Özil, Alexis. #AFC

Jozy A = Carling Cup starter today.

Interesting to see Jonathan Spector on the bench for Birmingham City in that game. With Pogba, no doubt one of SAF's greatest mistakes.

Thanks for posting the bit about 'Man U' -- had no idea.
Me either... and I had it backwards, thinking United was the bad one and Man U was acceptable.
Meh. I'm not calling them "United". There are other teams that can lay claim to that as well. And it sounds arrogant like THE Ohio State. You can't call them Manchester. ManU is just an abbreviation. It isn't even in that stupid song.

So is the EPL like the SEC where you want the other EPL teams in the Champions League, and pull for them (EPL, EPL)...or do they all want the other EPL teams to lose?

I would prefer Arsenal to miss out on CL. They lose money if they miss out, which gives them less to spend on getting stronger, and players are less likely to go to them. Plus, as pointed out earlier in the thread, it means an extra £3m for the teams still in it.On the flip side of that coin, a win by arsenal means England has 4 teams competing in the CL which hopefully means they will keep the CL allocation spot (4 places)...

I won't speak for the fans of other teams but there is a side benefit to having teams from your domestic league winning in Europe as it affects how many teams qualify for Europe each year.

Any, or just the big four leagues

Russia reportedly passed France yesterday when Zenit won and Lille lost, meaning (if things stay the same, Russia 6th and France 7th) only the French champion will be entered in the CL group stage next season. I think its likely that PSG could keep Ligue 1 above Russia though if they advance, assuming Zenit don't shock the world under AVB's leadership.
