I miss the days when everyone assumed the refs were in United's team selection and not in whoever's they are playing against...

Does this prove that that Fergie had a big say/hold on the refs? Can't just be a coincidence that things change this drastically when he leaves.

I think there was pretty clearly an intimidation factor. He was like an active living legend and never afraid to throw that weight around. I doubt any referee went out with the intention of making favorable calls, but they are still human.

Makes you wonder doesn't it? But to me it has gone so far the opposite and is so bad now that its like the refs want to confirm that they were pro fergie. I dont understand why they would do that though...

ESPN is reporting that LA is trying to get Pirlo to replace Donovan

The Los Angeles Galaxy are considering a bid for Juventus midfielder Andrea Pirlo, but a prospective deal is stalling because the Galaxy insist the Italian playmaker move in January, halfway through Juventus' season, according to multiple sources.

Pirlo, 35, has set standards with the Italian national team since 2002, playing for the World Cup champions in 2006 and establishing himself as the fulcrum for the Azzurri attack in recent years.

Although he is under contract at Juventus through 2016 with an annual salary of 3.5 million euros, Pirlo could replace the retiring Landon Donovan as a designated player in time for the 2015 MLS season, should a deal go through.

Galaxy coach Bruce Arena would not confirm the Galaxy's negotiations with Pirlo, but said in an email: "We have an interest in a player of his caliber."

I do think FIFA wants an return WC in the States. The US has a minimum of infrastructure to build specifically for the event, and so people can just focus on making money and not worrying about the construction headaches. We also as a nation organize and stage big events well, and we don't have the security issues that other places have. That's all relevant to FIFA.

The other thing is that FIFA will want to cement soccer as a big deal here in follow up to 1994. The American market is massive potentially, and very rich.

This. I'm not sure why anyone would think FIFA doesn't want a WC here ASAP. 1994 remains the most-attended WC and the 2014 ratings and growth rate both have got FIFA dreaming of $$. It would also hasten the day soccer is a "big" sport in the US, which benefits everyone involved one way or another. Throw in the fact that there's a surplus of infrastructure and they know the event will go off without an organizational hitch and it starts to look like a slam dunk IMO.

I would guess that FIFA executives profited more handsomely from the Brazil, Russia and Qatar bids than they will ever see from a US bid.

They also care a lot more about sponsorships and TV revenue than US attendance (which is one and only reason Qatar still might not happen). You want a US WC again, you need Visa, Coke, Adidas, Emirates, Hyundai, and Sony to say so.

The US can bury any other country on sponsorships. Not even close. The bribes, not so much, but then FIFA's particularly sensitive to bribes right about now so that may not be as big of a factor in the near future as it has been.

Here are the scenarios from KC's point of view in the Saprissa game.

1 goal loss or better: KC advances

2 goal loss:

A) 2-0 Saprissa advances

B) 3-1 Draw of lots (every tie breaker is identical)

C) 4-2 or higher KC advances

3 goal or worse loss: Saprissa advances.

* Towards the end of the game, Dunseth said that there was a chance the death trap known as Estadio Saprissa might not but used. That could be worth a goal to KC.

James Ward-Prowse out for 6-10 weeks with a broken foot. Looks like the plan is to move Tadic more to the middle and let Mane run the left wing. It will be an interesting attack when Jay Rodriguez comes back later this year.

Koeman seems to be playing a version of the Mexican high post offense, with Pelle dropping deep to receive and all those middies running off him. Even runty Steven Davis made a couple of runs last night.

Trying to keep the Saints win in perspective because of the makeshift Arsenal lineup but the Gunners still played the Columbian national keeper, Sanchez and a bunch of guys who get a lot of minutes (Podolski, Rosicky, Wilshere). Portland won 6-0 last night in Champions League play putting them in a similar position to KC where they can advance with a 1 goal loss in last game, away to Honduran Olimpia.

MLS's record in the group stage against non MLS team now sits at 10 wins, 1 draw, 0 losses. This is by far the leagues best showing in the group stage but because of the short group format, there is still work to be done to get 4 teams to advance.

If I had to rank the likelihood of teams advancing it would be

DC

Portland

Montreal

KC

NY

DC and NY play tonight which could result in DC advancing and NY being eliminated (which subsequently makes Montreal advance).
