Villa is the man.Is it me, or does Torres hate to pass the ball? David Silva should not be starting over Fabregas.
It seems like Torres is always trying so hard to show that he deserves a place in the squad that he takes himself out of the game. Trying to prove he can do it himself, which isn't best for the team.

That first goal was classic Torres from his time at Atleti. Getting the bottom of foot on the ball off a ricochet. He does try too hard to manufacture goals, and rarely lets the ball flow through him to create opportunities.

Did you guys catch the little touch that Villa put on the ball with his right foot to redirect it back into his line and behind the defender... beautiful, and the exact opposite thing that the US strikers do. He's got great acceleration to jump on loose balls, and step on

Honestly, I felt that while Spain was clearly the better side both in terms of skill and the way they played today, I think that Sweden had played well enough on D to earn the draw.

Still a win is a win, and Spain is (99%) through to the 2nd round, where they will likely fail after controlling the ball and having good chances at scoring.

In a final note, my gf said, "Man, the Swedish team has really perfected that ####-eating grin, haven't they?"

:sadbanana: Sad, but so true

Can't decide who I'm rooting for here...I just got done watching Rambo III, so I guess I'll go with the Greeks here.

I think Torres is unfortunate in that he's a lot like the rest of us here watching a Spanish game. He finds the deliberate build-up maddening. He sees so many chances wasted because they look for the perfect opportunity that by the second half, he makes up his mind that he's not going to play that first ball to Villa. They need to find a way to play a few more direct balls to Torres.

But back to the original point, MLS kids that jump over need to make sure they do what Adu and Altidore are doing/did...get loaned out or go to a situation where you will play
huh?? Freddy saw very little time this season. Its not a good situation at all for him to be in at his age. If it doesn't change in the coming year he could do some serious harm to his development. Training sessions only go so far.
My understanding was that his playing time has steadily increased and that he is becoming an impact player there...is this inaccurate?
yes, it is almost 180 degrees wrong.he started well and was having an early impact and then as the year went on he saw less and less time, until finally rarely seeing the field.Freddy only appeared 11 times (most as a sub) in all competitions for Benefica.
Again, :lmao: I tried to check out as many of their games as possible. He started off hot and cooled off as the season wore on, while playing less and less. Hopefully he can make a bigger impact this upcoming season.

So, US, Mexico, Morocco, or Venezuela jersey for the Galaxy game?
Hmmgo with the Morocco
I went with "Other" here and am wearing an Atlético Madrid shirt (not jersey) instead. I need to get an updated US jersey, a Spain jersey, and an Atlético jersey. Next time I'm in Spain, I'll get the last one for sure.
 Good choice.I need an updated US jersey as well....I have a newer Arsenal jersey (Walcott) and a blank Euro 08 Portugal white jersey (gift from my brother during his trip to Lisbon)....I have a Euro 04 Italy jersey (Totti) that needs to be updated as well....

Greece needs to step up the attack in the 2nd half. They are getting dominated in the offensive midfield. That play by the goalie was TERRIBLE. How dumb...

Does anyone know if/where the US game will be broadcast tomorrow?

I was hoping FSC would have it, but they don't. Also, it looks like myp2p doesn't have any links for it. There's a couple of other CONCACAF games on....Puerto Rico....Mexico....but no US.

It does look like the CONMEBOL will have some links to watch the games tomorrow afternoon. Argentina/Ecuador is on at 5 PM eastern....should be a good match....

ESPN2Is it me or has ESPN really ratcheted up their soccer coverage of late?

Speaking of Totti, why was he left off the Italian squad? It looks like they could use him.

:bag:I was misreading the time conversion into GMT....I thought the game was at 2 PM, not 5 PM. I didn't even bother checking the ESPN's because of the 2 Euro games at 2:45....Thanks

Russia deserved that win, which sets up a good match between them and Sweden for the 2nd spot. Personally I think that Sweden is the better side, especially in the defensive end and set pieces, but Russia has the ability to push up top and create chances.

Gettin interesting...

i wonder if arshevin will get a chance to play against against sweden. pretty sure he was only suspended for the first two games. he could be a difference maker for russia.

Brief writeup on the Galaxy - Quakes tilt:

There were a LOT of people at the game, nearly 40,000. Obviously Becks is a huge draw. It's great to see MLS drawing as well or better than the A's in the same stadium. Many of the fans there looked as though they knew soccer on some level, although probably half or more weren't "MLS fans" and couldn't name another player in the league. The guy next to me asked which MLS team Freddie Adu played for...

The game istelf was pretty poor overall. The Earthquakes are bad all around. Minimal ability to create and attack, and they were outclassed in many spots. Becks, who at the start of the game was ranging all over the field from defensive center midfield, to an attacking winger on the right, to a holding midfielder on the left. He was clearly a class above the rest of the players, and even though he was booed by the Quakes fans, he gave great service and the attack flowed through him. He had a beautiful corner that resulted in a score and a few other dangerous crosses that created opportunities. At around the 40th minute he apeared to come up lame and as a result, wasn't the same player thereafter. He stayed on the right wing the rest of the time, and mostly up at the front. The galaxy had the game firmly in hand by them and didn't really need his help too much.

The crowd was fairly subdued, and there were probably as many Galaxy/Real/ManU shirts as Quake shirts. There were a LOT of other soccer gear that people were sporting from England jerseys to a Romania jersey, a Russian jersey, Mexian league teams, a few South American national team jerseys (including my gf in Venezuelan gear) and me in my Atlético shirt. Quite a mix. There were also quite a number of foreigners present as well as the typical MLS parents bringing their kids to the games. Lots of races present... latinos, indians, asians, white, and even a few black people were there.

All in all it was fun, but the game itself wasn't anything to write home about, especially after seeing the EURO games this morning. It was a good day, full of soccer though, and that's what counts. I doubt I'll go back to see another Quakes game until they can show that they won't get blown out and dominated like they did today.

He retired from the national team.

Anyone hear how ESPN's ratings have been so far for Euro? I was always curious how a tournament with no US (and not even England as it turns out) would be received over here, plus I'm hoping that they pick up Euro 2012 too, as I'd hate to see it go back to PPV like 4 years ago.

This was from a few days back but it does show the games on ESPN2 were viewed considerably more than those on ESPNC (for obvious reasons, some people probably don't' even know they get ESPNC).
Germany-Poland tops early EuroTV ratings

VIENNA, Austria: Germany's 2-0 win over Poland topped the first three days of ratings for the European Championship, drawing about 683,000 viewers on ESPN2.

The opening day's games Saturday were on ESPN Classic, with 169,000 viewers tuning in for the Czech Republic's 1-0 victory over co-host Switzerland, and 291,000 for Portugal's 2-0 win over Turkey.

When games shifted to ESPN2 on Sunday, 445,000 watched Croatia's 1-0 win over co-host Austria before the audience peaked for the Germany game. The United States' 0-0 exhibition tie against top-ranked Argentina that night drew 457,000 viewers on ESPN Classic.

On Monday, with games on ESPN, the Netherlands' 3-0 victory over Italy was seen by 553,000 viewers and France's 0-0 tie with Romania by 393,000.

This is the first time the entire European Championship is being shown live on U.S. television without pay-per-view. Games start at noon and 2:45 p.m. EDT.

By comparison, Manchester United's victory over Chelsea in the European Champions League final on May 21 was seen by 1,097,000 viewers on ESPN2.

Euro 2008 tournament director Christian Mutschler said ratings in Germany, Portugal, the Netherlands and the two host countries had exceeded expectations, gaining audience shares of between 70 and 82 percent. More than 850,000 people have watched games at fan zones in the host nations, where fans without tickets can watch matches on giant screens in a party atmosphere.

UEFA is also happy with the corporate side, with 80 percent of all hospitality tickets being sold and 17,380 clients attending the first eight matches.

UEFA spokesman William Gaillard said TV ratings for Germany were especially impressive and predicted the Netherlands' 3-0 win over Italy on Monday would bring similar results. About 23.7 million people watched the Germans beat Poland 2-0 on Sunday for an audience share of 69.6 percent.

"The figures for Germany are absolutely astounding," Gaillard said. "Never before at a Euro have we had this kind of figure, and I think probably the Dutch figure for the Netherlands-Italy game is probably an all-time high for Dutch television.

"I don't think it is possible to get more than 70 percent of the population that is watching TV to be watching one program with so many channels."

Has anyone seen any figures showing how many players from the different domestic leagues are playing? I would be interested in seeing a breakdown by league.

7,476,000 people watched Netherlands vs France here. Population is 16 million. When we played Brazil in the semi final of the World Cup 98 there were 11,7 million people watching.

On a completely unrelated note....is anyone playing this summer?

Had our first game of the season last Monday....my first contact game since my January shoulder surgery. I'm kinda "on loan" for the summer, so I came off the bench as essentially super-sub. Played about 40% of the game, scored 1 goal and had an assist in the 6-2 win. 2nd game tomorrow.

Anyone else playing?

Any Netherlands fans?

Who do you think will be rested?

What about Spain? Think they will let Villa keep scoring or let him rest?

What level are you playing on?I wish I was playing. I'm going to look for some pickup games. I don't have the cash or the commitment to play in a rec league right now.

Well it's an interesting league. It's actually a summer intramural league at school...it's a school of 30,000 people, so the teams are pretty good. However, they added teams from the competitive, rec, and co-ed leagues together into one summer league. Most of the players on our team play in the top league in Buffalo...the club premier league. Some of the others play in the "Coca-Cola Championship" level....basically comprised of D-III players mostly....I kinda play in that league.

We play against teams of co-ed kids ####### around one week and teams full of college players who are in grad school....very competitive players. The team we played last week were ok....probably a mid-level team in the league.

We're a good team...there's a few weak spots, and the one guy who I sub in for isn't very good. But....he's on their roster full-time, and I'm kinda only on it for the summer, so he starts over me.

:banned: I play in a Co-ed YMCA league. We play 7 v 7 on small fields with no slide tackles or offside, but with a 3 line pass rule.

I think the average age of the team is around 40 and that is with several teenagers (kids of our players who are now old enough to play) bringing the average down.

We play a winter and summer season. The summer season starts next week.

We are Dazed and Confused Soccer and last season was one of our best; we actually won 3 games!

That sounds like a lot of fun and a great way to both stay in shape and spend time with your kids.Do people take it seriously, or is it just for fun?

I play in an amateur rec league. Our season normally runs from September through April with a 7v7 league in the summer. For the first time in awhile, we aren't playing in the summer league. I think that we are going to move from the regular rec league up to the over-35 league next season. With half the team over 35, we are playing against too many 20-year olds that tend to just "out fit" us. After you turn 35, things start to hurt that have never hurt before and you start injuring muscles that you barely knew existed so I think it's time to slow things down a bit and lower the risk of injury. I still love playing and hopefully can play well into my 40's (I'm 38 now) by playing more with the "old" guys in a slightly relaxed albeit competitive environment.

 Sounds like fun though.A few years ago, our club team played a local team that had a player well into his 50s....guy was still awesome....still ran circles around some of our players....their team was actually a bar team, and he was the guy who owned the bar and started the team 30 years ago....I hope to be able to do that, but I doubt I'll be able to...

WHAT THE ####

This Turkey/Czech game is absolute bananas
