The net spend numbers can be interesting but I think for many clubs the more important data is the accounting value after amortization - either for FFP or PSR which have some differences. I'm not saying cash in/out isn't also important, but if you're doing that analysis you probably have to consider other things like salary and payment terms.
I am fairly certain FFP/PSR/ETC take into account salaries and terms along with game day revenue, marketing, sponsorships.
If you want to go down that sort of rabbit hole I highly recommend the Price of Football podcast

I do not. HAHAHAHAHAHA

All I need is for United to stop overpaying for players to come in and underselling players to get out. Oh and stop keeping players long past the usefulness to the team.

It seems Donnarumma Is now available as PSG have reportedly signed Lucas Chevalier from Lille. ESPN reports that Donnarumma earns €850,000 a month and wanted a pay raise so has refused to sign an extension.

PSG seem to want like 29m for him? But he wants 250k per week. I'd be happy if United went in for him. They need to get some outgoing first though.

Still have to unload Garnacho, Antony, Sancho, Malacia.
Not sure they should move Hojlund but maybe a loan would be good.
Then dump Onana if they get Donnarumma.

1. I will never stop trying to make DonnaSummer happen.

2. Even conceding that GKs are often enigmas, Donnarumma is the most "looks like the second coming of Lev Yashin for two months, and then looks like the second coming of Loris Karius for a month" goalkeeper I can remember. He's world class and then has these three or four game spells where he looks absolutely terrible. It's the damnedest thing.

It also seems he's kind of a ****. He's one of those guys like Diego Costa - when he's on your team you love it and you say, "yeah, but he's our ****" - but you know he's still a tremendous insufferable ####.

Guehi deal sounds ~done, and Leoni from Parma sounds increasingly likely. Assuming Isak forces his way out, Chiesa stays, and Elliott, Doak, Tsimikas are sold...

What a summer.

@Desert_Power Is this for depth or will he have a chance to start?

BREAKING: Charlotte FC have agreed a deal to acquire goalkeeper Drake Callender from Inter Miami, per sources.

Callender surprised by destination and wasn't consulted in the process, sources add.

Charlotte add former GK of the Year finalist.

Would assume depth (the backups are really awful) unless the reigning GK of the year is on his way out.

So . . . It’s hard to get an official team photo of France and even poking around brings up some interesting implications. I wonder what the England side looks like in ten years. I don’t know if it’s comedy or whether I should shrug and play it cool. I’ll bet some weep a little, but I’m too outward-facing for that. Amour-propre and all that.

France

🇫🇷

Sacre bleu! France is using players of African and Carribean descent! What a stain on the legacy of Zinedane Zidane and Thierry Henry

:standing ovation at the curtain close:

Weird because I never mentioned their regions of descent. Nor did I imply France was besmirched by it. I said something about self-love actually,

But thank you for the heartfelt performance. I was totally ignorant of the headbutter and the the dark-skinned forward. I missed it all. I was unaware of French promises of citizenship for former colonial subjects.

How provincial of me. How crass of me to now (now because you did the heavy lifting) note that there are maybe one or two players that look like a Frenchman as anybody over forty understood the word. If this photo hadn’t taken about thirty minutes or so to hunt down and the first comment here hostile—never mind what I saw online—one might think it was an issue in transparency and the obvious truth.

Or it could be a decade ago a pretty non-racist (not anti-) guy watched he national side and said “that’s France?” and chuckled a bit.

Anyway, “rockaction” is derived from the band Mogwai who scored the movie “Zidane,” so I’m aware of his presence and from Camus and Derrida and Fanon and the recent hubbub with Mackey and State what Algeria and France can mean.

FFS, we all know the point you were trying to make. And it was stupid. It wasn't just Zidane (Algerian descent) and Henry (Guadalupe). It was Thuram (Guadalupe), Makelele (Zaire), Viera (Senegal). Most of the stars of the French side that won the World Cup 27 ****ing years ago. France has been heavily influenced by African and Caribbean players since at least the 1990s. Not because of some Viktor Orban immigration crisis but because FRANCE WAS A COLONIAL POWER well into the 20th Century.

Did you miss the Fanon and Malley (autocorrected to Mackey) references as well as the explicit mention of citizenship there?

Yeah, there wasn’t much of a point other than to comment on that to look for a photo is to confess to a motive and draw criticism. I think that’s odd. If Franklin Foer is right, then it explains your response to posting the photo. My point was that people assume you have a point. And yeah, I get it. I can totally see why it’s weird and untoward. But maybe the weirdness comes from its accuracy and what that might mean in the grander scheme of things.

Orban makes me completely blanch (good word there). I don’t care for almost anything about him.

Hey Ramsay, you know what? I could have not spoken to you sarcastically in my response. In an effort to make you aware that I was fully aware of the implications and some of the key historical points, I got wrapped up in making a point rather than discussing it. I was grandstanding. I’m sorry.

I’m also not sure this thread was the place for my flights of fancy. You come here to blow off steam and talk soccer and this thing that at first blush offends your morals is presented. I get your indignation. My apologies. It did not come from a place you might have thought it did, but it’s still out of place. Take care, Ramsay. Safe travels.

Immigration is a hot button political topic in France and it has spilled over into soccer, but i think your implication may be misplaced. You referenced a picture of the English football team and I’m not sure exactly why but they also have had several foreign born players over the years from North Africa, Jamaica, Canada and elsewhere. The US team has had many players in recent years who speak English with a very heavy accent and have hardly ever lived here (mostly German military babies but many others as well.) Over half the Moroccan national team at the last World Cup were born outside Morocco. It’s a very common phenomena in international football because the eligibility rules are such that many players could choose among three, four or more countries to play for due to their ancestry. We talk about it all the time in the USMNT thread with no hint of politics or anything to do with immigration. The reason France is somewhat in the current spotlight is because they are very good right now and due to Argentinian fans and players getting in trouble in recent years for a chant they do about the French team that’s been deemed racist.

Thank you, Cletius. I wasn’t aware of the Argentinian stuff. I am aware of other incidents and the implications thereof. My post wasn’t a well-thought out post for a bunch of reasons. It shouldn’t even have been posted here.

I read the soccer threads and you all do a great job (and a humorous one) of letting the banter be about the game and sport. This wasn’t out of ill intent but wasn’t appropriate for what you all are doing. It’s not in the proper spirit of it. My apologies again.

I'll also apologize for probably overreacting. France is a pretty special case and despite all the Le Pen stuff going on, it's just weird because they've already had two highly multicultural World Cup winning teams, so it's kind of a weird thing to bring up. The most right wing dude in France isn't yelling for Kylian Mbabbe to be off their national team. And the long-time multicultural make-up of France's national team (Jean Tigana was a key player in the early 80s) sprung from French colonies. France colonized Algeria , Senegal, Mali, Mauritania, French Sudan, Cameroon and then the French Antilles and Haiti in the Caribbean. Almost all of the current Franch team was born in a dense urban area of France, identified as talents as very young players, and developed at Clairefountain, the fabled French developmental academy. I'm not sure there's another country in the world that has such uniform process for turning out "French" players. You don't get French players who grew up overseas and were developed in other countries the way the United States does. It's also true that France doesn't have birhright citizenship. Randal Kolo Muani didn't become a French citizen until his parents were naturalized. So, this just isn't an "immigration wave" phenomenon about changing demographics.

Interesting. So the premise to the condition I was addressing was faulty and made it not on point. Fair enough. It’s probably why restraint and total familiarity are the best ways to approach an issue like that. Thanks for the clarification.

Timely reminder that 99% of the time no one knows nothin' about inbound transfers...
Aug 31, 2001 — Liverpool have completed the sensational double signing of Chris Kirkland from Coventry and Jerzy Dudek from Feyernoord.

I'm happy to have opened that pic and thought the issue was that they were in full sun and squinting, making it a little funny looking. Otherwise....Yeesh.

liverpool is the team to beat
They didn't look great Friday but even when they play bad they score at least 2
Chelsea will surprise
I want Arsenal to win it all but it will be tough. Their transfers were very good except the left side and I am not sure they will gel quick enough. They cant afford to give away point
and in case anyone forgets Man U sucks

No he already said "Man U sucks"

Although after the opener, either Arsenal is going to struggle to another 2nd place finish, or United will be much better than everyone thinks.
Losing 1-0 on a howler/borderline foul plus a potential PK not given does give hope. United looked better and if Sesko gets going with Cuhna and Mbuemo, they may just be the plucku underdogs.

Theres another plucky group of underdogs in Manchester. So small and unknown, its easy to forget theyre there.

Damn Noisy Neighbors.

And Jadon Sancho is not serious about being a footballer. F Him.
Now what?
Still not wanting to negotiate wages to make a move to a new team. Roma had a deal with United which is falling apart due to wage demands. Besiktas also agreed to match the deal but Sancho won't even talk to them until Sept since Turkey's window closes 9/12.
I think a couple other teams had looked at him but couldn't agree to wages.

He would rather sit around and get paid to do nothing for a year then move to a new team and play.

Slot has his work cut out for him to figure out how to keep all the attacking firepower happy and still balance the midfield. They're going to score a crapload of goals, but they've been way too open in the friendlies, the Charity Shield and Week 1. Especially if Isak is signed and Chiesa gets back to form I have no idea how you get minutes for all the deserving forwards + Wirtz.

Right now... ignoring the odds anyone else wins it, the bookmakers have it:

Liverpool 33.8%
Arsenal 31.3%
City 26.2%
Chelsea 8.7%

I feel like Liverpool should be a more dominant favorite and that there should be little to no gap between Arsenal and City. Lots of new faces in week 1 that will take some getting used to. I'm pretty excited to have football back.

I genuinely think Man U and Chelsea will be in the mix for top 4. Agree top 3 should be aix of Liverpool/City/Arse

Arsenal didnt look good , no flow or chemistry. The only positive is these are the type of games they used to lose and you need to win when you want to win the league
United actually looked good, i was not expecting that after last year's abysmal season

I think it is Liverpool's to lose , they seem to score at least 2 goals a game
Man city looked better than last year as well but its only 1 game
Chelsea will be a dark horse

Arsenal have a lot of new parts, right? I expect disjointed at the start of the season. But the player class should congeal and rise. City have some nice new pieces too...and i still dont really understand what happened to them last year.

Yeah alot of new faces and they will need time to gel
Bournemouth and Arsenal have the 5 toughest games to start the season on paper. This a huge stretch for us if we want to win the league , gotta keep collecting points to keep pace with the other top teams

Losing Rodri and I think the age of some key players causing them to slow did not help them overcome.
KdB, Gundogan, Silva all 30+
