@Desert_Power That is a nice bit of business Charlotte did today. Selling Malanda to Boro for $8m and retaining him on loan until the end of the season, and they retain a sell on clause.

He was rumored to PSV earlier this summer so not too surprised. I always joke that Malanda and Kahlina staying in Charlotte is proof that MLS ratings are bad.

He's developed into a very solid CB despite some earlier mistakes. I think Dean was huge for him.

The loan is huge. Charlotte using those well to manage the roster by not having to use a DP slot for a guy like Pep.

I'm looking for a solution to watch the PL games on NBC sports but they don't have a standalone subscription service. We want to drop Hulu. I have peacock and paramount + but need the games on NBC. tia

You would also need USA, right?

Yes but USA is part of the NBC group as is Peacock. It would be great for me if NBC had a standalone app like they have with Peacock for $10 / mo or whatever it is, but they don't - you have to go through a cable provider to get NBC Sports. For me, that means $110/mo for Hulu pretty much just to watch a few soccer games each month. Now that my kids don't care about the Disney part, I'd like to drop Hulu. Partly due to the cost, but mostly just to pare down and simplify my life a bit.

I hear ya - just clarifying because basically you need the non-Peacock games which would be NBC and USA both and you only mentioned NBC, as well as CNBC/MSNBC whenever they drop games there. But those are getting spun off so I have no idea what's going on there. Maybe those two don't get the matches anymore. NBC you might be able to find an antenna solution for your local channel? Otherwise, maybe a cheap Sling option has both NBC and USA?

I think Peacock shows replays of the USA/NBC games, but you may have to wait a day. If you want live, FUBO maybe?

Unless you think Isak is straight out lying about everything, it's hard to understand Newcastle's angle here. Good luck signing anyone without an iron clad release clause in the future I guess.

They can’t just cave into the brat without getting market value for him - would set a bad precedent. Plus we have ZERO ACTUAL STRIKERS. We need 2 before we think about letting him go. And yes, he should fire his agent for not including a release clause. And yes, Wissa is almost behaving as poorly as Isak.

Monday at St James is gonna be mental.

Going to be interesting for sure. It's probably all still just posturing to get maximum value after the NUFC v LFC game next week, and he gets sold after that.

This is a fun one... lowest end of year position by each team currently in the EPL since 1962/63 (when Liverpool was last promoted to the First Division). There are three teams that haven't been down in that time (LFC, Arsenal, Everton), but LFC have spent 63 straight years in the top 8. There's a lot more movement here than I'd have guessed too:
  • Liverpool 8th (1962-63, 1993-94, 2011-12, 2015-16)
  • Arsenal 17th (1975-76)
  • Everton 19th (1979-80)*
  • Manchester United 23rd (first in second tier, 1974-75)
  • Tottenham Hotspur 25th (1977-78)
  • West Ham United 29th (1979-80)
  • Chelsea 40th (1982-83)
  • Newcastle United 42nd (1991-92)
  • Manchester City 47th (third in third tier, 1998-99)
  • Aston Villa 48th (1970-71)
  • Leeds United 49th (2007-08)
  • Nottingham Forest 51st (2005-06)
  • Sunderland 52nd (2019-20)
  • Crystal Palace 55th (1962-63)
  • Wolves 72nd (fourth in fourth tier, 1986-87)
  • Fulham 85th (1995-96)
  • Brentford 87th (1973-74)
  • Bournemouth 89th (2008-09)
  • Burnley 90th (1986-87)
  • Brighton 91st (1996-97, 1997-98)

NR, my impression -- even before the q-finals here -- has been that MLS has probably bypassed the Mexican Liga at this point. Is that legit?

I feel like some of the Mex v MLS comparisons are tied to schedule....MLS being neck deep in playoff run now, or in preseason for other interleague play vs Mex which iirc is tied to standard world calendar (so are in their pre or early season form now)

IMO, Liga MX teams are still better built, top to bottom, as they have a much better use of their money to build rosters where MLS teams can be top heavy because of all the stupid rules that forces teams into only one mode of building.

The leagues are very close IMO. I might give the edge to Liga MX but if some one said the opposite, I would not argue.

Note that things like the leagues cup are hard to judge which teams are better because the entire thing is played in the US. While some of the Liga MX teams still have incredible support here in the US, it is different than playing truly at home.

Freddy with advice for Yamal (my advice to yamal is to listen to what Freddy says- and do the opposite).

Adu once found himself in a similar position, with the ex-United States international - who was billed as the next Pele after making his MLS bow at 14 - able to offer important words of wisdom to Yamal.

Adu, speaking on football odds, has said: “So obviously all eyes are on him all the time, and that's hard. That's really hard. For me personally, I couldn't just be a regular kid, and this is coming from someone in America and in the States, football isn't even the biggest sport here! Yet I was going through that.

“I can't even imagine how it is for him over there in Spain. It's probably just magnified 1000 times, because that is the national sport. He plays for the biggest team, it's the national sport, everywhere he goes, everything he does; all eyes are on him. And that's hard. As a young player, when you're put in a situation like that, it's just very, very difficult to handle.

“My advice would be for him to just put his head down, train and just focus on his craft. Because there will be a lot of distractions. And I'm sure there is right now. I mean, there's been some stuff in the newspapers that I've seen where he was with a woman that was way older than he was or whatever, on vacation and whatnot, and everybody's talking about it. Every little thing he does is going to be talked about.”

The advice is fine. Bojan Krkić is on staff at Barcelona though. I'd say he probably has the most relevant advice for young Ryan.

Advice on how to stay in the media decades after being famous maybe.

Is his advice "maybe try to pass a beep test once in your career?"

Garnacho to Chelsea gets a "Here we go"
Hojlund to Inter is on the verge of "Here we go"

Up next a loss to Burnley on Saturday. Manager is sacked or steps down over the int break. United goes back to the 4-2-3-1 and yoyo'ing between 4-8th place in the table, inmates run the asylum, glazers and ineos continue gutting everything and the toxic fan bases rages at who knows what.

Newcastle get Woltemade. Bayern fans seem displeased (they were hoping to sign him) despite everyone saying it's an overpay for a relatively unproven striker. Isak was unproven when Newcastle signed him from Real Sociedad, too, and the regime's track record when they do get around to signing players has been really good so I'll trust them. Now we just need one more rotational striker and then we can tell Isak to **** off to the Scousers for stupid money and the window will be a success.

So after the obvious fix that was in for Miami vs Orlando I have lost all faith in MLS. I have really enjoyed getting to know the game since I started following Orlando. So I thought I might start following one of the Premier teams. Do you guys have any suggestions. I don't want to be a band wagon jumper so I thought maybe the Wanderers.

Thing is they are at the bottom of the table and might get regulated. So how hard is it to follow a team as far as watching matches from a specific team and does it get more difficult once a team is regulated. If you have any suggestions and know of a way to watch and keep track of a specific team please let me know . Thanks

Everton, Spurs and Man United are good mid-low tier teams that dont risk relegation.

Bright Hove & Albion plays a fun style, but dont have the pedigree to ensure long lasting prem status.

EtA...or do what i do and pick a team(s) eith US playwrs. Fulham are typically a good mid table squad with occasional europe hunt excitement- Jedi. Crystal Palace is in europe this year after a solid last season- Richards. Burnmouth has Adams. Leeds has turkey bacon.

Or jump down into the championship with a bunch of US players on a bunch of teams.

So how do you follow to watch live or maybe taped games. I was also thinking Wrexham since I've been watching the show on TV. Still wondering how you follow closely.

While this is before my day, this is more like what i had to deal with than the yellow card finger tap stuff we see today.

Up to you. I try to watch US player games when i can, or if theres a juicy matchup i try to catch that. But im not a "fan" or supporter of any of these teams outside of the USMNT, so im ok missing games. i don't miss US games.

Paramount Plus has most of the EFL matches - those are the ones that are below the Premier League. You can watch Wrexham there, for example. I also track Ipswich Town because of shared ownership with our local USL team, Phoenix Rising.

Keep an eye on Alex Freeman he is going to be good.
Poch has such a boner for him, its been hard not to watch Freeman.

But yeah- hes already almost there. Great 1v1 defending, decent ball and decision making skills. Needs to iron out his read on runs and how to mark them vs the ball- his biggest weakness ive seen. If he can up his offensive output and work out those positional kinks, he could be a major player for the US

As long as it's a team that doesn't fall all the way to League One, you'll be able to watch most games I think. Even the Championship is pretty accessible these days.

Another options would be Arsenal. Great history, don't have an oil owner and live by their own revenues, haven't won anything much in a long time but are a legitimately big club. Same idea, but on steroids... get down with Man United. Even greater history, have a run of the mill ****ty ownership group, and are an even bigger club that if/when sold should come roaring back.

Then there are the clubs like Spurs, Villa, Everton that are likely to stick around forever (even teams like Brighton will eventually fall out of the PL -- the smaller clubs get unlucky sooner or later).

One club that no one's on but that is a pretty big club and generally on the rise is Nottingham Forest. But their owner is a chud, and they may be more volatile because of it in the long run. But he's not afraid to spend money and they've got a huge fan base.

Sunderland and Leeds are also very big clubs historically and haven't been in the PL much in recent years. So if one of them can hang on and not get relegated they might have a long run. But I think both have had kind of serious front-office issues.

If you're willing to live with a yoyo team that will go up and down fairly often, you could jump on Norwich (USA star Josh Sargent is a budding hero there) or maybe West Ham (in the EPL for a long time, but historically a yoyo team). Southampton too maybe. Or Fulham. Or one of the fun teams to watch actually in the EPL already (Brighton again).

Sounds like 130 million euros will get it done for Isak if Liverpool offer it, even if we don’t get a second striker. I hope the Scousers make the bid so we can tell him to **** off. It’ll create a lot of flexibility.

I also think this means we’re close to signing someone. Nick Woltemade came out of nowhere.

[ETA: NVM... see it everywhere now.] Are you seeing something new? I've not quite been hitting F5, but I've been checking Reddit every couple hours and haven't seen anything. It does sound like Guehi is more or less wrapped up.

Re-sign: VvD, Salah
In-bounds: Ekitike, Isak*, Wirtz, Guehi*, Leoni, Frimpong, Kerkez, Marmardashvili
Outgoings: Trent, Diaz, Nunez, Doak, Tsimikas, Quansah, Kelleher, Elliott?, Phillips, Morton
Rejuvenated: Chiesa
Emerging: Rio

Wish they'd been able to re-sign Konate too, but other than that this is as good a summer as the team will ever have. Jota aside.
