Agree or disagree: United is a dicier situation in their group than Chelsea despite being at the top of the group table.
Porto 10, Chelsea 7, Kiev 5, TA 0

Porto needs 2 points to advance.

Chelsea is away to Tel-Aviv and home to Porto. Kiev is away to Porto and home to Tel-Aviv

Both teams should get 3 points vs Tel-Aviv

United 7, PSV 6, Wolfsburg 6, CSKA 4

United plays at Wolfsburg and Home to PSV

United needs a win and a draw to qualify. Chelsea has to either beat Porto or hope Porto beats or draws Kiev

With Tel-Aviv in the group Chelsea may have an easier looking situation but neither are sure things.

Agreed. The thing that gets me is that each of the teams in United's group thinks they have a shot at making it through. Tel Aviv knows they are done for. Chelsea has their most important game at home; their road is clearer. The thing for United is that anything can happen. The next set of games will be crucial for them.

I know the rankings are pretty worthless, but Belgium is #1 in the FIFA rankings for the first time ever.

That's pretty amazing.

This Benzema case is so weird. He's actually been charged for being complicit in an extortion. As near as I can tell, the story goes like this.

Valbuena is contacted by criminals who have a sex tape of him and are demanding money (like 50 to 100 K euros, chump change for a pro footballer). Valbuena reports it to the police. That authorities bring in Djbril Cisse, of all people, for questioning. But he's quickly released.

Apparently Benzema's childhood friend knows the criminals who have the tape and asks Benzema to speak to Valbuena when the French national team gets together. Benzema, for some unknown reason, does so. Maybe he's worried about his friend's safety or whatever, but he says something to try to broker a deal, despite presumably knowing that this is being investigated.

Yeah I was trying to wrap my head around this whole thing. BBC throwing out nuggets like "minimum five year jail sentence". How did the cops know that Benzema said something to Valbuena? Did Valbuena tell them?

Just read about this...so bizarre. Apparently Benzema's brother is also involved...

Also some tenuous links to the "Air Cocaine" scandal going on in France. Damn my fascination for bad boys!

20:41 CET:

The “childhood friend” of Karim Benzema’s mentioned earlier today in the live feed as been charged with blackmail and association with conspirators.

15:23 CET:

M6 have some damaging reports just breaking now on the saga. They claim that prosecutors have listened to a telephone conversation where Karim Benzema explained that he was certain that Mathieu Valbuena was going to given in to blackmail, according to a source close to the situation.

During this telephone conversation, between Karim Benzema and an individual whose connection to the case is unclear, the Real Madrid striker is alleged to have said the following:

“Do not worry. He has no choice. I’ll make him understand. He’ll pay.”

Change in the US Open Cup for next year to exclude all USL teams owned by MLS teams. Even though US Soccer did not mean it, the wording is so loose (see below), one could argue that NYCFC are also ineligible.

==============================================================

“Any Outdoor Professional League Team that is majority owned by a higher-level Outdoor Professional League Team shall be ineligible to participate in the Open Cup. The Open Cup Committee shall review and determine team eligibility annually pursuant to this provision and report its decisions to the National Board of Directors.”

whoa.

I mean... allegedly whoa.

Just finished watching AC Milan-Atalanta...Man, Milan's 16 yr old GK Donnarumma looks special. He made at least 4 exceptional saves while Milan was totally under siege in the 2nd half...especially impressive considering Italians are so adverse to starting youth at any position, yet alone goalkeeper. Buffon has an heir?

Got up @ 5:30 here on the East Coast...couldn't sleep. Amble into the living room, & there's my 9 yr old, wide awake also, sitting on the couch. I ask him what he's doing up so early, & he says: "#### Lazio!...I couldn't sleep either Dad!" Ok,ok...he didn't quite use that word, but the intent was there. Derby Della Capitale @ 9:00, and I'm pacing like a madman already, with a nicotine/caffeine intake that already surpasses my daily allowance. Forza Roma. Lazio merda.

There's a derby today? I hadn't noticed... :coffee:
Awesome Sunday morning; North London derby immediately following Rome derby. Dark, hidden secret...my eldest son is a Spurs fan...so, Forza Spurs?ETA...Eriksen is a personal favorite, & it doesn't hurt that Christian is also a Roma fan, so....UP THE SPURS!...but I also admire Arsenal & their style of play, as well as their FBG fan base, so....Basta!...Let's all agree, #### the fascist pig Laziale!
