BREAKING: Hanover chief of police: "There was a device intended to be detonated inside the stadium.”

UPDATE: German police say they received a tip off 15 minutes after gates to football stadium opened.

Not a big fan of all these attacks targeted at stadiums when I'm planning to visit Barcelona and Paris in April and seeing games...

At least they didn't target the St. Kitts and Nevis friendly at Estonia, which is proceeding without incident. Estonia leads 3-0 at HT with goals from Antonov, Puri and a cracker from Vassiljev.
I'm kind of astonished St Kitts' FA was able to get the team to Europe. Can't imagine they've played many, if any, games there.

hfs.

don't think of other terrorist bombings getting tipped off though. makes me curious and a little dubious.

either way- I hope everybody's all right over there.

holy ####... started reading backwards- just saw some of the older posts about the ambulance.

hfs.

and I'm with RHE here... this is some horrifically dreadful turn of events. really hoping the world can return to "normalish" soon as possible.

maybe they were all English based players in the lower divisions?

huh- I incorrectly had thought they were Dutch. this makes sense.

It looks like maybe half the team is from the English lower levels with the rest scattered around the globe. Estonia must have paid for everything.

No major upsets in the African WC qualifiers. All the expected countries survived the home/away knockouts to advance to the groups.

The only two lower FIFA ranked teams to go through were Morocco over Eq. Guinea and Libya over Rwanda. Morocco's FIFA ranking was artificially low because they didn't play any AFCON matches in the last cycle due to the Ebola scare. Libya was eliminated early on in AFCON 2015 in part because they couldn't host home games because of political turmoil. African football--where amazing happens.

STOP RUINING MY OASIS, UNIVERSE!

back to the soccer aspect of the classico, Messi is back to training and the rumor mill keeps spinning that this will be CR7's last classico at the Bernabeu.

same rumormill has Messi going to Arsenal.

so there's that.

(although I do buy that CRo is more likely to be leaving than messy)

Dele Alli with an absolute thunderbolt.
MK ####
He's all Spurs now
Until Levy sells
Just talking about that in Spurs board - with the new TV revenue, teams don't need to sell, and with Spurs already fielding the youngest squad in the league, they don't really need to make any significant acquisitions in the next year or 2.
Is their new stadium funding package secured?

They claim they have financing for the stadium separate from the teams operating funds. I suspect a chunk will come with naming rights, and a loan secured, in part, by the NFL commitments over the next ten years.

Spurs have had no net spending on transfers for several years now in anticipation of the stadium - so, in theory, their austerity period once the stadium is built should be shorter than Arsenal's.

Honduras and Mexico tied at 0-0 heading towards the half in Honduras. espnstatsthing has it looking pretty dead-even. anybody watching?

Just switched over to it after watchinging Argentina do everything they can to lose their lead to Colombia. Cheech with a great shot to the far post parried away to Jimenez who puts it in the stands.

:bag:

I've almost turned into my dad, with my mis-naming of players.

I was thinking about Guardado, not Garrido.

to truly turn into my dad, I have to jewify the names more... Guardaubman.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic fired Sweden to Euro 2016 with a double against Denmark and quipped after: "They said they were going to send me to retirement. I sent their whole nation into retirement."

Big chance for Canada tonight. With Mexico winning in Honduras, that should put Honduras on 0 points after 2 games. If Canada wants to make the Hex, they are going to need a draw tonight in ELS if not the full 3 points.

Jürgen Damm plays for Mexico?

Canada needs to win, IMO. They are going to be up against it against Honduras and Mex. wait.. I forget... only the top 2 advance- the hex is next?

and Guat won 4-0 away in the cricket ground. they were somehow able to keep a clean-sheet against that offensive powerhouse.

That was awesome. Serious question, if the GK caught that ball would he have been whistled since his teammate played it 'back' with his feet?
no.

feel like they've loosened up a bit on the "back pass" thing with GKs. if it's clearly not a pass, they allow it. I saw something recently where a defender was obviously trying to clear the ball, shanked it and hit an easy floater to his GK. ref allowed play to continue... rightly so, IMO.

can't believe how much wind assist there was on that though- holy hell. even the second bounce, which was low, got pushed hard past the GK.
