so is Hyndman ready to contribute at age 20 or will the Cherries look to loan him out for a year?
from what little I saw of him last year w Fulham, the Yutes and the Nats- not quite ready for prime time. a little off the game-speed needed in the EPL, IMO.

but he's close- and could really use regular time somewhere. but here's hoping he's developed more than what little I've seen and can challenge for time with Bournemouth proper and not get loaned out. again- looking up and down that lineup, nobody really jumped out at me, so he might be able to force his way in. definitely has the talent and potential from what I've seen.

This is what's so frustrating about last year.  As I understand it, Hyndman wouldn't sign a new deal, so Fulham refused to play him until the year was almost over.  So it's really hard to know.

He was one of the few in the US Olympic qualifying team who didn't look overmatched against Colombia, FWIW.

thought he was great in the u20 wc too.

eat: also a guy who seems to have adopted the central/south american short-short in his play- does very well combining with guys.. which would be a lot of fun with pusilic and nagbe.

Atletico sign Nico Gaitan from Benfica

Should be a really good signing for them
Yes, a nice signing.  Just need a #9 (like everyone else in the world).

This ups the number of Argentineans on the roster to 5: Gaitan, Fernandez, Kranevitter, Vietto, Correa. Plus 2 Uruguyans and a Brazilian.  Heard they are going after Higuain too...

Why didn't MLS take a break? I had no idea they were still playing. Seems pretty weird.
This weekend was the first MLS games since Copa started.

MLS always does breaks that coincide with group stages.

They can't really afford to take anything longer with out really cramping the schedule in the second half.

There was an interesting situation that happened at the end of the NYC Philly game (this was the game that all 3 NY DP's scored).

* At the end of the game an obviously happy Lampard goes over to shake hands with Villa

* Instead of shaking hands Villa starts to (what looks like ) verbally berate Lampard, pointing to various spots on the field in an angry manner.  It appeared he was pissed at something Lampard either did or did not do during the game

* Lampard, taken a back, tries to calm Villa down, but Villa then waves his hand in frustration at Lampard and walks away muttering to himself angrily.

MLS needs more older players who care like Villa and less players like Lampard who still does not seem to get it.

From what I just read about it apparently Villa was pissed at another player for not trying to score on the open net at the end of the game (Blake came up for the last minute corner)

ETA: Villa and Pirlo both look upset that the clearance was put out of play    https://streamable.com/0kpl

Can someone help me understand this Brexit thing, is it possible the EPL could be looking at no international signings this year

There's been a lot of speculation about what the impact will be on EU work permit rules.  My guess is nothing happens immediately because there's too much money tied up in the current system.

League Cup draw today.  No sponsor this year so it's called the EFL Cup.

The Dons will travel to Peterborough.  NUFC and Norwich get first round byes but Villa plays Luton Town away.

I never remember what the League Cup is... open to EPL and Championship sides only?

I scoff but I'd be overjoyed if Wimbledon could win a couple of EFL Cup games and knock off a bigger club's reserves along the way

Could the US beat Iceland?
I think once you get past the top half dozen teams in Europe and a smaller number in CONMEBOL, the US would at least have a puncher's chance for a result.   But there are probably 30-40 countries in that second tier.

:goodposting:

the US can and has beat any team in the world. the problem is they're also capable of losing to not just the top 30-40, but the next 20-30 as well.

eta: and tbh- "puncher's" chance implies they'd need a lucky knockout blow. I think that's true for those top teams- once you get to the next tier of 30-40, they're pretty much in the US range and the US can go toe-to-toe with most all of them,

Yes, but it's not a given and odds are probably with Iceland. There's no Gylfi Sigurdsson in the states.
These numbers below are relatively meaningless but I know people highly value where players play their club ball when trying to compare teams:

From the Big 4 leagues in Europe:

The US had 4 EPL and 4* Bundesliga players on the Copa roster

Iceland has 1 EPL, 2 Bundesliga and 1 Serie A players on the Euro roster

*5 if you count Wood who transferred to the Bundesliga before the Copa started.

but still no Gylfi

After being spurned by Vardy, Wenger can't possibly go into the season with Giroud, Walcott and an injured Welbeck can he?  I would offer RM whatever it takes for Morata at this point.
