I think what the EPL/MLS are doing with this is a great idea to get folks out to the games.
These exhibition games have been going on since MLS started in 1996.   The last handful of years have seen more and more English teams coming over.

In the old days these games were important for MLS revenue as they tended to be higher draws than a league game but now that MLS has grown so much the last handful of years, these games typically draw less fans than an average match.

As you mentioned it does get a different mix of fans into the stadium which is always a good thing.

you can really see the affect of the Euro and Copa here.  Not a single African or Asian team in the top 30.

As I've been saying for months, there's no reason Leicester should lose anyone. They've got a billionaire owner, are title holders, CL football. They're buyers this summer, not sellers. I read that Kante has a buy-out in his contract, which might change things if true, but I think those are very rare in England and would be surprised if he has one. Honestly, it makes no sense for him to move to Chelsea, so I'm ignoring that noise. I could see someone like Kouilibaly or Bonucci or someone else from Serie A possibly joining Chelsea yet this summer due to increased wages.

I'm with you on that.  Supposedly Leicester is willing to pay Kante up to 100/week.  Even if Chelsea were to offer him a new contract, is it really going to be THAT much more money?  Are they going to pay a one-year wonder 150k/week?  200k?

Leicester is in pot 1 of the Champions League.  That means they have a great chance of getting out of the group rounds.  It would make no sense for Kante, Mahrez or Vardy to leave for a non-CL league right now, unless some team just throws ridiculously stupid money at them.

I think this is going to be a frustrating few years for Chelsea and Arsenal.  I don't think either of those two teams are that far ahead of the rest of the EPL.  ManU and Man City are on another level economically, but Chelsea and Arsenal really aren't.

2 years ago, missing the CL meant you were in a severe financial hole compared to the rest of the EPL.  Now, it's not nearly as big of a deal because money is pouring in all over the place.

So while there's more money than ever, the overall quality of talent in the world hasn't changed.  If nothing else, that money is causing guys like Payet, Mahrez, Vardy, Kante from leaving and going to the "big four", thereby keeping the gap from widening.

The big four is dead.

wow... always liked this kid- seems like a big ceiling left in front of him. a little surprised they sold.
They put a buy-back clause on there in case he explodes.

I was a huge fan of Ibe when he first came out.  He seemed just as fast as Sterling, plus he was bigger and stronger.  But as time went on, it became more and more apparent that he just didn't have any end product.  I think in 39 epl games he had 1 goal and 2 assists.

It always seemed like he'd put his head down, blow past defenders, then look up and have no idea what to do.  That never really changed, and I don't think his style is at all what Klopp is looking for, but hey if he turns into a star at Bournemouth, LIV can always buy him back.

I don't really pay attention to the stats... but that's pretty telling. and I agree with you about his style of play.

Big 4 may be dead, but Leicester will have a very tough time repeating their success, or a close proximity to it, imo.

Its not that their starters are not talented, and capable, its that now they also have to contend with mid-week games, and their depth is nowhere near what it needs to be to compete on multiple fronts.  They are going to have to pick one competition and concentrate on that.

We talking about Leicester or Tottenham?

More on this - and Arsenal supporters can chime in - but I thought Arsenal was operating under some austerity while financing the stadium.  In terms of revenue, Arsenal was 3rd in the league in the 14/15 season, latest available, with £345M (on par with City at £352), Chelsea 4th at £319 - Spurs were 5th at £198, and Newcastle 6th at £129.

And, Chelsea may only be 4th in revenue, but they have an owner who is not afraid to spend a ruble or 2.

Chelsea's did score that new Nike kit deal :excited:

Mr. Shader... I've got to say, as a relatively "new" fan (~2 yrs, correct?), you're grasp of the game of soccer & all its financial nuances & overall complications concerning international vs league club competitions is quite impressive, in such a relatively short period of time.  You even have the smacktalk down pat.  Excelsior!

Tottenham have been playing in Europe for 7 seasons now, their depth is fine.
I was mostly kidding around, although Tottenham will face some of the same challenges Leicester does, though not nearly at the same scale.  Leicester had some unbelievable injury luck last year, so they are going to play in MORE games and likely not have the same injury fortunes.  So yeah, they'll need to improve.

The jump from Europa to CL is pretty big.  It looks like Harry Kane played in 6 of 10 Europa games for Tott last year.  It's usually pretty easy for EPL teams to play the B squad and get through the group stages, so the fact that they've played in Europe for 7 seasons isn't all that relevant.  To advance through the CL, they'll need their A guys playing each game (plus those A guys will all be chomping at the bit to play).

Tott is a big enough team to handle it, but it won't be easy.

Thanks Kafka.  I love it.  I used to devour american football, even wrote some game recaps for FBG a few years back.  But something about soccer grabbed me and hasn't let go.  I love this sport.  I probably stick my foot in my mouth more than I make sense, but I'm learning.

speaking of... this could be an outlier here, but I was always impressed with Sterling's strength- his last season with Liverpool, there wasn't anybody who could knock him off the ball, regardless of size.. plus, he'd win far more than his share of 50/50 balls. we had an english kid on my college team- pretty small, but you just couldn't get him off the ball. I was 6', 170 but could never get that skill down... definitely a skill/technique more than a strength thing.

Oddly enough, Spurs played mostly 1st team in Europa group stages, and did not rotate heavily until the group was clinched, and at Dortmund in the 2nd knockout round.  I think Lloris started all Europa games, Dier started 9.

Spurs will have a tough group - 3rd pot, and can't get Leicester - so getting out of the group stage will not be easy.  But they are probably done with transfers with Wanyama and Janssen in - and both cover the two holes from last season, no cover for Dier or Kane.

I'll be pulling for Leicester and Tottenham in the CL.  It's not like I have anything else to watch mid-week.

100% agree...he is very strong for his size.

I thought Ibe would develop a little better, but he might be relying too much on natural ability and not putting in the extra effort to get better.

I suffer from the same "foot in my mouth" syndrome, but they accept us here, (I think  )...This game is truly like no other, & when you become a devotee, you will find yourself defending it to the death; against all naysayers, neanderthals, & nincompoops.  "Tenui Nec Dimittam"

Speaking of Champion's League, Spurs just announced ticket prices for the group games that will be played at Wembley - range from £70 to £150.

And those are the prices for all 3 games combined.  They also have permission to use all of Wembley for those games, so it looks like they are shooting for as big a crowd as they can get rather than take a big payday.

Inter's playing Etudiantes at RBNY stadium in a couple weeks- prime seats, midfield up about 10 rows are selling for $58. hmmmm.....

eta: tickets start at $20. nice.

While you guys are wasting your energies in a competition that Barcelona will win, we'll be on the practice field with Herr Klopp soaking in his knowledge and CONCENTRATING ON THE LEAGUE
Maybe this time the concentration will help you get higher than 8th.

Higuain now considering to betray Napoli & move to Juventus, ala Pjanic.  God, I hate that fat-faced babyboy jerk...(I swear he's a Brazilian/English half-breed implant made to sabotage Argentina).

wtf happened to the Netherlands?
Rankings?

Its a rolling 4 year average, and Netherlands did not qualify for Euros this year - so they got no points this summer, plus lost whatever points they accumulated 4 years ago.  So, its more that teams jumped ahead, then Netherlands is getting worse.
