Hearing Nagbe could be on the move to @ATLUTD in the near future. #MLS

Hearing from multiple sources that Atlanta is looking to acquire Darlington Nagbe... If a deal were to go through then I'm being told it would be for an amount that would have eclipss Dom Dwyer's fee to Orlando earlier this year.

Interesting rumor. Looks like he's affordable (about $500K) and can fill the Asad spot since he's likely out. I wonder how we're preparing for the eventual Almiron sale I expect is this time next year. This has to be a TAM trade as I can't imagine we're giving anyone worthwhile to Portland in this move, right?

League record allocation money, apparently.

The LAFC expansion draft is tomorrow.  As always they will get to choose from a cadre of players.  Picking the right 5 players here is probably as much luck as scouting.

Here is the full list of who is available.

#MLS sources telling me to expect #LAFC to trade expansion picks rather than draft players for their inaugural roster. I'm preparing for a lot of shop-talk tomorrow

Maybe the odds are due to big game experience. Spurs have had an impressive run in one of their few CL appearances but Juvie, despite not being the Juvie of the past few years, still brings a lot of battle hardened talent to this matchup. The core of the lineup that shut out Barca(!) over two legs last year is still there.
Apologies for the self quoting here, but I forgot to add in this post how tasty delicious the Spurs-Juvie matchup is. Two of the others in this round are, too. Can one of you old hands briefly recount the history of the bad blood between Chelsea and Barca?

FIFA following the MLB rulebook?

FIFA suspends Colombian player Edwin Cardona 5 matches for his "slant-eyes" gesture in a match against South Korea - with the suspension allowed to run for the next 5 friendly matches - thus Cardona should be eligible just in time for the World Cup...

I wouldn't necessarily say bad blood, although there was some Mourinho v Pep stuff in the 04/05 Champions League ties, including one ugly/shameful tunnel incident by Jose. They've had some really great ties over the years.

They met in the CL knockouts in 2000/01 (which I did not see live), 04/05, 06/07, 08/09 and 11/12, with many great moments, heartache, gnashing of teeth, great goals, red cards, missed penaties, extra time winners, etc., etc.

Surprisingly, I just looked this up the all-time series and see the record is 5 wins each and 5 draws, so both teams are 5-5-5 against the other.

pardon the translation

======================

Ezequiel Barco, the last jewel that emerged from the inferiors of Independiente, could be close to farewell to emigrate to the United States. The Atlanta United directed by Gerardo Martino is willing to pay 16 million dollars to stay with the youth of 18 years.

The midfielder will start tomorrow in the rematch of the final of the Copa Sudamericana against Flamengo, and on Thursday his representative will meet with the Board of Directors that must accept or not the offer of the MLS team, which would also offer 10% of a future sale.

The proposal seduces the player and if materialized, it will be the most important purchase in the US league. Can he go champion?

Another hallmark of these matchups have been the clash of different styles with Chelsea playing very defensively.  Doubt it will set up that way this time.

Shake up in Miami again with Becks.....This thing continues to morph

=================================

The investors behind David Beckham’s bid for a Miami soccer stadium have undergone a significant shake-up, with majority partner Todd Boehly out and Miami moguls Jorge and Jose Mas joining the venture, according to several sources close to the talks.

News of the shake-up comes days before the Beckham group hopes to finally win approval from Major League Soccer owners to grant the retired soccer star an expansion franchise in Miami for the deeply discounted price of $25 million. The discount, attached to Beckham’s MLS contract as its marquee player when he joined the Los Angeles team a decade ago, has been a sticking point with some owners as Beckham’s bid for a Miami soccer team is on the verge of entering its fifth year.

In losing Boehly, Beckham parted with the latest in a series of would-be top investors: the co-owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers was slated to be the majority owner and controlling partner in the MLS league. But in the Mas brothers, Beckham gains as partners two of the most prominent business executives in Miami and the family behind a leading corporate name in the region, MasTec.

The arrival of the Mas brothers follows Jorge Mas losing out to Derek Jeter and partners in a bid to purchase the Miami Marlins earlier this year. It also follows public signs of strain in the Beckham camp, with one-time lead negotiator Tim Leiweke in November publicly airing his “fears” that a Miami deal wouldn’t get done.

@bentley any inside scoop on this lady?  is she just pandering to her base or does she have real influence?

https://www.bizjournals.com/columbus/news/2017/12/12/austin-council-member-opposes-crew-sc-owners.html
She's the worst kind of NIMBY politician that is going to ultimately kill any economic progress in the city of Austin - but also has a lot of power. I'm convinced now that City Council is going to #SaveTheCrew through their own inaction. Council vote set for Thursday postponed. Hearing conflicting reports on whether that's for PSV to solidify their base and move forward or whether it's Kitchens side running out the clock on expansion. I should know a whole lot more at lunch tomorrow.

It still amazes me that an MLS team is being linked to a player of this quality.  I can't see how they out bid the bigger teams though.

The subject of Atlanta United's attention is Ezequiel Barco, Independiente's teenage sensation who is the most talented youngster to spring out of the club's academy since a 15-year-old Sergio Aguero began tormenting Primera Division defenses back in 2003. At just 18 he is already a fixture in Ariel Holan's first team, and one of the highest-rated forwards currently active in the Argentine top flight.

Barco may yet slip out of Atlanta's grasp in the upcoming transfer window, particularly if he puts in another top-drawer display in the Maracana to down Flamengo and deliver the Copa Sudamericana. The eyes of the football world are on the teenager, and even $14 million might not be enough if Europe's biggest clubs sit up and pay attention to Independiente's phenomenon. That is the nature of football: some transfers are bound for frustration, and it is a lesson Atlanta fans will learn as the seasons roll on. But the mere fact that the franchise feels free to bid on a talent like Barco is proof that they are looking to create something very special in the dirty south, and have both the money and the ambition to achieve it.

Real Madrid down 2-0 to Al Jazira in the CWC semi-final, early 2nd half.

Not sure who's carrying the game in English but it's on Telemundo in Spanish.

ETA:  why wouldn't the US bid to host this?  Hold it in LA or Texas or Miami or something since it's December.  That would be one way to get an MLS team into the competition

ETA2:  sorry still just 1-0.  Damn you VAR

Atl looking like an offensive Juggernaut. Should be fun to watch again even if they don't get that 18yo

You know what strikes me funny about this deal is Nagbe's biggest weakness is his willingness to default to other players.  No coach has been able to ever get him to come out of his shell on a long term basis.  with Nagbe going to a loaded Atlanta team (offensively) I can't see him changing his ways.

If Tata figures out how to crack Nagbe's passiveness, good lord they could be really really good.

Do we expect Almiron to go to Europe?
All the rumors seem to have died down so it is hard to say.  If they spend the massive amount of money on that 18 year old stud, I don't see how they can balance the books with out selling Almiron but Atlanta seems determined to drag MLS into its next phase of growth.

If they some how complete the transfer of Barco, it could go down as the most important signing in league history behind Beckham.

Here are the milestones Nagbe has to hit for Portland to get back the extra $600k.  There is no way he is hitting any of these first 3.

====================

$150k - League MVP

$100k - 12 goals or more

$100k - 15 or more assists

$250k - Top 3 in MLS points + ATL win MLS Cup

Find the Players Tribune article from Almiron. I don’t think he’s leaving until this time next year at the earliest.

One stat: Lukaku completed seven passes in the Manchester derby. Bernardo Silva completed six. Bernardo Silva was an 87th-minute substitute

Manchester City have won 15 straight Premier League matches, setting a new record in English football.

On to Tottenham

Had lunch w PSV prez today. Didn’t learn much other than they are really committed to stadium being downtown if it’s going to be here. They’re having another community meeting with Austin supporters tonight.

I love that Al Jazira's goal was scored by a guy named "Romarinho"

Independiente drew 1-1 at Flamengo tonight giving them the Copa Sudamericana title with a 3-2 aggregate win.

Of the 3 goals for Independiente, Barco scored 2 and assisted on 1.  Both goals were pk's.

Now we wait until tomorrow when the decision is supposedly going to be made....

Holy crap, I think it is happening...

=========================

Barco, one of the latest jewels emerged from the lower categories of Independiente, said in statements at the end of the game that next season will play for Atlanta United , Major Leage Soccer of the United States.

"I am very happy for the title won but this is my farewell to the club, I did not want to leave without conquering a title and luckily we won this trophy," he said.
