Antonio Conte to Tottenham, confirmed and here we go. The contract until June 2023 will be signed on Tuesday. The verbal agreement is now completed. He’s back in the Premier League.

#THFC Fabio Paratici wanted him since June and changed Conte’s mind. Incredible work. #Conte

Contracts just don't get use to him. He doesn't tend to stay in one spot too long

Sergio Aguero out three months after having some type of heart issue after having chest pains in the game this weekend.

Unai Emery is the new supposed frontrunner for Newcastle. David Ornstein from the Athletic is reporting it’s down to him and Eddie Howe with Emery being preferred. If they can announce him during the break that would be ideal. There’s winnable fixtures after that and Newcastle are in danger of being so far adrift that it won’t matter if they sign 10 Mbappe’s in January.

This post reminds me of something I was ruminating over the last few days.

With Newcastle and their oil money, were they sniffing around Conte?  Did that speed up the process for Tottenham to fire Nuno and snatch Conte?

I still maintain Spurs should have just hired Conte in the summer, but that ship has sailed obviously.

I think they reached out to Conte but there was no real interest.

ETA: on Conte’s part

Manchester City announced Robinho signing (I think) the same day the Abu Dhabi group takeover was announced, which was in the winter transfer window.  Robinho had a few decent games, but I think he's in prison somewhere now.  One of Chelsea's first signings after the Abramovic takeover was Adrian Mutu, who never really broke into the team due to his love for cocaine.  I think the club still has a judgment against him for the signing bonus it paid.  But Chelsea also bought a few good players with that first splash of cash - Makalele, Wayne Bridge, Joe cole and Damian Duff I believe were all in that first Russian oligarch window.  I still have a knockoff Chelsea Duff jersey from his second year at the club - Umbro with the Fly Emirates logo on the front.  Its a bit tight around the waist these days.

Guillem Balague

@GuillemBalague

#Emery will reject the approach from #Newcastle. His doubts after the game had to do with not knowing the latest. And the latest -I think- was an unnecessary huge pressure on match day & not a clear vision from the club. What does Eddie Howe have to do with Unai, for instance?

On the plus side, Nuno and his staff are now available - I think one is from Scotland, which might as well be Newcastle.

Smart of Emery to turn down this IMO. Seems a pretty limited coach, but is only 50. Better to thrive in the Europa tier of Spain a bit longer.

FWIW it appears Balague is giving his opinion and not breaking news. Craig Hope is saying it’s all but done and he’s been pretty spot on through all of this.

Welp. Emery confirms he’s staying. Obviously NUFC dodged a bullet here by avoiding this Premier League failure who wilted under one day of media scrutiny.

I am worried for Amanda Staveley. :oldunsure:

I think this could backfire spectacularly for her, and her friends in the Middle East.

Regardless of OleIn or Oleout, I think the bigger need is MAGUIREOUT. Ever since his return vs Leicester he has been absolute crap.  Most of the goals since his return have been at least partly his fault.

Bailley and Varane would make a great pair.

Jones still on the books, right?

I think a lot of candidates, both managers and players (or at least their agents) are going to wonder if the juice is worth the squeeze.  One thing FFP kind of did is allow PSG and City to pull the ladders up after them.  There are still exploitable loopholes, but it's just much harder to have a sovereign wealth fund buy a team and just wave enough money around to become a super team.  As teams like Malaga found out.

If Newcastle become a CIty/PSG type of team, nobody is going to care about the association any more than Pep is particularly bothered by the association with Qatar.  He has the team to change the narrative.  But I think that's at least a five year project for the Toons under the current FFP rules.  And it relies on signing people who are willing to face those tough questions while only being realistic candidates for the Europa Conference League or something for awhile.

I think they are a real threat to be relegated - which does not mean that they can't get to the peak - eventually.  But it does make the journey a bit longer.

It also would put the Saudis in a bad mood when they get together with their friends in Qatar and the Emirates.

I sort of get the notion of Newcastle as a sporting investment - club with some history, large fan base, large stadium, and undervalued.  But, I would have thought the "buy-your-way-to-the-top" would have gone over better if they had bought a London-based club - maybe a Crystal Palace or even West Ham, which would have still be undervalued, but would be an easier sell to prospective players/managers.

As I understand Staveley, she is really just a facilitator of Middle Eastern money into England - i.e. she really doesn't bring anything to the table.  So, if this becomes an embarrassment to the Saudis - I think she could find herself in a bit of hot water.

Is there anything better than a Maguire "hair swipe"?

Put me in the OleOut camp.  And yes, Maguire has been horrible.  United’s back line is the definition of the parts being much greater than the sum - they suck as a group.

Who would you replace Ole with? And would they keep building as Ole has done or would they go Jose (get a trophy while tearing it all down)? I've said it before but I actually think Ole would be a great Director of Football for United.

So far my biggest complaint on Ole is he plays favorites. When in doubt play McFred.
He is afraid to sit someone underperforming.  He won't sit Maguire.  He sort of sits Pogba. He's afraid of his bench so he only gives them a moment here or there.  Certain players know they do not need to be at their best and they will play regardless.  No competition for spots.

There is no organization in the back, esp on transition to def.  No proper spacing or marking.  They are better with Varane but still not good enough. I do not think they have a true defender on the coaching staff and that may help.

I'm not going to listen to 9 minutes of Rory pontificating, but would say most CFC fans loved Conte and are disappointed to see him go to a London rival.  I don't really care because I'm not affected by the local tribalism thing, so its no difference for me who they hire or where he goes to manage.  Its stupid to expect some sort of "loyalty" from him or any manger, but particularly from Conte. The club fired him and he had to sue them just to be paid his rightful comp. Jose did the same switch, as well as United, so what expectation can anyone have from Conte? Conte has managed something like 6  or 7 different clubs in Italy.  There's no reason he shouldn't take the job if he wants it.

It was actually mostly about Spurs - and how they have finally gotten the managerial decision correct after years of getting it wrong.  No animosity towards Conte for going to Spurs, just disdain that Spurs might actually achieve something now.

Going to need to hold onto Maguire a little longer:

Ben Dinnery@BenDinnery·13m

Manchester United confirms that Raphael sustained a hamstring injury, which is expected to keep him out of action for around a month.

RBs and ATL tied, I think Montreal won.

It's coming down to the last game this weekend.

I screwed up my ESPN+ sub so I always had to watch these on my phone. Plus the fact where the cafe is compared to work and timing of when I got out logistically to get there just sucked. At least now I can enjoy 2nd half on my TV. Though given my job in retail and my future who knows what hrs I'd work and if I'll still be there then. If I can't get full time in the next year or 2 I have to seriously start thinking of my future anyway and hopefully get a job where I can work early and take half days every now and then.

I’ve looked at this like 10 times and I’ve yet to find a source that agrees but I think Atlanta has clinched because 2 of the 3 teams that could pass them play each other.

I guess technically Orlando could lose 1-0 and we lose 8-0 to Cincinnati but effectively I think Atlanta has clinched.  Anybody have a good link?

The ATL players looked like they were celebrating afterwards...and seemed like they were playing for a draw. So maybe you're right.

Yeah I saw that. Maybe its time for Jones and Bailey!!!!!!

Maguire plays so slowly, he even falls slow. I mean when he falls it looks like a movies scene where they use slo-mo for dramatic effect.  Only its real speed for him.
