It always feels like there is a huge game in February in the Bundesliga where you wonder if this is the year some one can get past Bayern Munich.

Usually it is Dortmund who face plants in these specific games.

But tomorrow, we have Bayern Munich vs Bayer Leverkusen in Leverkusen.

Leverkusen is still undefeated on season but only has a 2 point lead on Bayern.

This game may have a big say on who wins in Germany this year.
And that was the exact opposite of a face plant. Leverkusen's dream season marches on!

If Bayern fire Tuchel things might get interesting but otherwise it seems about 99% that Xabi will go to Liverpool this summer.

If they did, I wouldn't be surprised, but it would be crazy at this point.

In the last 4 seasons, Bayern has been in first at this point in each, and with only one of those seasons having more points than they have right now.
They didn't look great yesterday, but Leverkusen is having a great run. Keeping within 5 of them is a solid season right now, and still within striking distance if they stumble.

well this is a ****ing disaster............

Can confirm that Arthur Matteson has resigned as chairman of the USSF’s U.S. Open Cup committee. He said he was asked to “stand down” by higher ups on multiple occasions in terms of finding a solution as it relates to MLS participation. Says the Cup is in “grave danger”.
It's obvious that MLS wants to bury all pro soccer that is not tied to their closed franchise system. They'll do everything to keep all the $ for themselves.

Yup. They likely view the Open Cup as a free financial boost to all lower level teams when they get to play an MLS team.

It is extremely short term thinking. But this is not the first time they have struggled to see the bigger picture. Look at how long it took for them to become a part of the global market. They were absolutely convinced that American fans would hate the idea of selling players to Europe. Luckily the transfer money got so big that they had to finally join the global market.

Preliminary plans for the 2024 edition of the U.S. Open Cup have been approved by a subcommittee of the U.S. Soccer Federation board of directors, though the tournament likely won't look like recent editions, a source close to the USSF told ESPN.

The source indicated that complete details are still being ironed out, but the decision to have a tournament in 2024 has been made and what will likely gain final approval is a hybrid type of tournament with not every MLS team participating. The precise level of team participation from MLS and USL clubs is still to be determined.

The source added that the plan calls for the federation to make its largest financial investment ever to ease the cost of travel and assist with promotion, especially for lower-division teams.

The source also indicated this format would be for 2024 only, and there are ongoing discussions with all stakeholders about working collaboratively to find a permanent long-term format for the tournament.

Yeah, these two back to back tweets really don't have a foul odor to them :)

Massive signing either way I guess

For those who are wondering: I am told Inter Miami is officially roster and budget compliant ahead of today's deadline and tomorrow night's opener.Sale of Gregore to Botafogo cleared the way.

Fun Fact: Harry Kane has now played on a squad where the manager was sacked mid-season, for 5 consecutive years.
Xabi Alonso's agent must be rubbing his hands together right now.
Alonso is surely going to Pool after Klopp leaves
I think you misunderstood my point.

Agents love a bidding war. Having two giants like Liverpool and Bayern very likely wanting to bid on Alonso is very very good for business.

Liverpool should have the deeper pockets but Alonso gets more expensive the more giant teams are interested in him.

Fair enough. I'm not sure Bayern would even be in for him though
Multiple stories online that Bayern are interested. No idea if these are just made up or have real sources

Does anyone have a TL/DR for why the German fans hated the new Media rights deal so much that their ongoing protests during games actually got the deal abandoned today?

Probably the same reason why we chant "Sky TV is ****ing ****" at the start of every game, they hate the concept of prioritising the TV viewer over the actual fans. Difference is that there, they actually do something about it

I hope you mean "fans in attendance" and not "actual fans"...

I think there are tons of real fans all over the world who for many different reasons can't attend games in person and watching games on TV is the main way they can connect with the team.

And I hope you aren't implying that me paying literally thousands of pounds to follow my team home and away is somehow exactly the same level of support as Dave from Gary, Indiana, who has opted to become a fan of SUFC because we have an American player and likes the colours of our shirts. People who actually go to games getting seriously inconvenienced due to TV is a real thing, I've sold my ticket to the Arsenal game for these reasons, I missed the first half hour of the Everton game for these reasons, I've had to leave games early for these reasons, I've needed to take time off work for these reasons, I'm missing our game this weekend for these reasons

I don't think the "level of support" is the issue. No one questions the dedication of match-going fans. I'm not familiar with the issue in Germany or with Sky but the reality is that media dollars are driving the bus when it comes to the structure of top football leagues and competitions - likely way moreso than in prior decades. I get that it sucks at times for local fans but it kind of comes with the territory as English football has exploded on the international stage.

I would also be interested in a TLDR on these German protests. I know it has something to do with a new investment structure but haven't found a good summary of what its all about.

This really cool! LA announces their new player (the wonderful Ghana player Joseph Paintsil) and the song they use in his highlight video is written and performed by Joseph himself :)

Not sure I buy it but pretty cool as a general concept that he might even be in the conversation

How Jordan has continued to stay a top that list over time is impressive. I do think that the two best I’ve ever seen are Jordan and Messi. I have a feeling Gretzky would be up there but I’m not a hockey guy so can’t really include him. Those two would go on my Mt. Rushmore or players I’ve watched during my lifetime.

Mt. Rushmore of players
Jordan
Gretzsky
Ohtani
Rice (12th on the WR yardage list -- counting only yards after he turned 30 years old)
Messi

Honestly, Ohtani will need to do this for longer before I can add him - I paid zero attention to his pre-MLB career. He is amazing though and worthy of discussing.

Rice - that's an interesting one. WR is one of those positions where it seems hard to stand out compared to your peers. It's also VERY hard to influence your sport when it's totally dependent on others to get you the ball. In fact, I'm not sure there's another sporting position that is so dependent on others than WR in football. Him playing with 2 HOF QBs has to somewhat diminish what he did, IMO. Not denying he was great and maybe the GOAT of WRs - it's just a unique position and because of that I'm not sure I could ever see a WR being a Mt. Rushmore guy.

I'm a niners fan... Especially during that Rice/Montana dynasty. But I look at a guy like Moss- who had... I don't even remember who throwing him the ball- and just felt like anybody could toss it somewhere near him and he'd go get it. An absolute beast.

But I look at a guy like Moss- who had... I don't even remember who throwing him the ball-
some bum named Brady at one of his more successful stops
Moss had 2 years with a HOF QB throwing to him(his 3rd year in NE Brady got hurt in the first game). Rice had 14 years with a HOF QB throwing to him.(Longer than Moss's whole career)

That said... Rice's longevity was due to his unmatched work ethic. If Randy had that same drive it's almost scary to think what he could've accomplished with his natural talent.

As to the conversation... I don't think Rice separates himself from the other top WRs enough to be on a list with Jordan, Gretzky, and Messi, but that's just my opinion.

Liverpool vs Arsenal at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia on July 31
Liverpool vs Manchester United at Williams-Brice Stadium in Columbia, SC on Aug. 3.

Copa America ticket prices giving a feel of the insanity the World Cup is going to be.
My wife keep saying we should fly out to her folks place outside LA and go to the US games there.

We'll put in for the lottery, but I bet even the crap tix are like $1500 each if you don't win that.
