For whatever reason, Serie A doesn't seem to have the same cachet here in the States that it used to in the 80s and 90s.
This is news today, actually. They released the revenue numbers and here's the top 20 in the world.

1 (2) Real Madrid 831.4 euros (713.7 euros)

2 (1) Manchester City 825.9 (731)

3 (5) Paris Saint-Germain 801.8 (654.2)

4 (7) Barcelona 800.1 (638.2)

5 (4) Manchester United 745.8 (688.6)

6 (6) Bayern Munich 744.0 (653.6)

7 (3) Liverpool 682.9 (701.8)

8 (9) Tottenham Hotspur 631.5 (522.9)

9 (8) Chelsea 589.4 (568.3)

10 (10) Arsenal 532.6 (433.5)

11 (11) Juventus 432.4 (400.7)

12 (13) Borussia Dortmund 420.0 (357)

13 (16) AC Milan 385.3 (257.4)

14 (14) Inter Milan 378.9 (308.4)

15 (12) Atletico Madrid 364.1 (393.9)

16 (n/a) Eintracht Frankfurt 293.5 (208.3)

17 (20) Newcastle United 287.8 (212.2) 250.3 (179.7)

18 (15) West Ham United 275.1 (301.3) 239.2 (255.1)

19 (n/a) Napoli 267.7 (156.5) 232.8 (132.5)

20 (n/a) Marseille 258.4 (237.5) 224.7 (201.2)

In terms of who can pay big money for a player, right now it's:

One team in France, Two teams in Spain, one team in Germany, the Premier League teams, and Saudi Arabia, that's it.

We have US players on the 2 best teams in Italy, and historically 2 of the best in the world...even if they're not now. In same breath as Barca, Real Madrid, Bayern, Fulham, etc.
I've seen a lot of "Who's the biggest club in the world" debates online lately. Slightly different than "best" you mentioned but there is some correlation.

Curious to see how people here define "Biggest" and what their list would be....

Mine would be a combo of fanbase, history, how well known (has the casual fan heard of them?) but I am sure there is more to it.

Real Madrid
Manchester United
Barca
Bayern
AC Milan
Liverpool
Juventus

Then you have the group of Arsenal, Chelsea, PSG, Inter?, Athletico, Dortmund, City....

And Bournemouth and the rest of the bottom 14 teams arent exactly spending money like the EPL you're talking about.
It's not the NFL, for sure. There are haves and have-nots. But the revenue sharing in the EPL means more healthy clubs than in the rest of Europe, and they have the biggest TV deals.

The EPL doesn't need to have 18 teams all paying big money. 6 out of the top 10 are EPL, and LOOK at that dropoff from Arsenal to Juventus. The #6 team in the EPL is #10 in the world, and brought in $100 mill more in one year then the NEXT team on the list. That's massive.

The Italians ran their league right into the ground, their stadiums are dumps, and there's no big money coming from outside the country.

Barcelona should be keeping Real Madrid in check, but they cannot run their business. Horrible management.

When Serie A clubs had all the money, they had all the best and biggest stars and were on top of the world. I might think its somewhat cyclical but would also say the EPL now has what almost seems like an insurmountable lead position in terms of worldwide marketing, which is the straw that stirs the drink these days.

The partnership between NBC and the EPL was huge in getting this money. Breaking into the US market, showing all the games on tv. Allowed the EPL to become so financially superior, no one can catch them. Even allowed NBC to put most of the games behind a paywall and still grew.

I was living in Milan when Inter and Milan were the top teams in the world with lots of big stars.

But iirc, teams were only allowed 3 international players... Kinda like DPs. So it was different than the current EPL and their all-star international lineups.

If the idea of league finances isn't very interesting to someone, they might not know that the Premier League is in a very interesting spot right now. Because while there is no salary cap, they have begun enforcing their rules regarding their Financial Fair Play. Everton and Nottingham Forest have had point deductions, Chelsea is up against it, Newcastle will not turn into the new Man City, and Man City might have to sell a bunch of players once their ridiculous, inflated sponsorship numbers are finally called out. Man City has been cheating for a while, Arsenal might actually get their title after all.

The clubs at the top have been behaving in a very conservative manner, particularly this January window.

Tottenham is the only club buying right now, and not coincidentally, they have been fiscally conservative forever, staying profitable, and a few years ago when interest rates were nothing, they built the best stadium in the country, and the revenue from events/concerts/NFL games there all counts towards team revenue.

This is a #sehorn post. My son started playing and immediately made the local U11 travel squad, so now all we talk about is soccer and I'm apparently required to know Arsenal's status in the table and possible transfer and strategy options for the club at all times.

Teach me your ways. For example, I've got the table + tournament format that most of the Euro countries follow down I think, but what the hell are the Carabao Cup and the Supercoppa?
Look who's here! Welcome back! :hifive:

Arsenal competes in Carabo Cup, FA Cup (this is just English clubs)

To be pedantic, the FA Cup is technically for clubs just in the English league system - Cardiff, Swansea, Newport County and Wrexham would not take kindly to bring referred to as English, Jersey Bulls took part this year, while Guernsey and FC Isle of Man are high enough in the pyramid to be eligible to play but declined this year, presumably for travel cost purposes

There was even a short lived time (maybe two seasons?) where they upped the limit from 3 to 6 but still only allowed 3 foreign players to dress for each game which led to the ridiculous camera shots each weekend of healthy fantastic players sitting watching the game in plain clothes.

Wow..

Jurgen Klopp: “I told the club already in November that I’m leaving at the end of the season”.“I’m running out of energy, that’s the truth”.“I love absolutely everything about this club and #LFC but I know that I cannot do the job again and again and again and again”.

Understandable, but not what I expected or wanted to see today.

In the Wolfsburg game this morning, the referee was hurt and had to leave the game. The 4th official had to go into the refs spot but they had no back up for the 4th official. The stadium announcer had to make a general request to the fans in attendance to see if anyone could do the 4th officials job and eventually a fan came forward.

This was a Bundesliga level game, not some non league game.

The fan who came forward at least had some credentials. Tobias Krull, goalkeeper and sporting director of MTV Gifhorn (6th league) took over spontaneously as 4th official.

Watching Milan (gag) and just put together that Leao give off major Pogba vibe. Skilled and capable of being the best on the field.... Lacking... Dunno... Interest? To consistently elevate to the level wed expect.

Wow, that is a very good analogy.

Leao has everything a player needs physically to be a consistent top 10, hell even top 5 player, in the world and he really does reek of Pogba too many times.

Well I guess that answers my question of how Xavi was going to survive past today.

Xavi: “I will leave Barcelona in June”.“We have reached a point of no return. It's time for change. As a Culé, I think that it's time to leave”.“I spoke with the board and the club today. I will leave on the 30th of June”.

Leao drew a pk.

Theo missed it off the post and scored off the rebound... Disallowed.

Eta.... Announcer kept saying it was offfsides. But I'm sure it was the same situation somebody posted in here not long ago. PK is a direct free kick...the ball didn't hit any ody else coming off the post, so Theo essentially double kicked it by scoring off that rebound.

June”.
“I have decided I will not continue beyond June 30,” Xavi said after Saturday’s match. “It is a common sense decision for the good of the club.

“I took this decision days ago. I already knew it. But it’s time to make it public.

“I think the players could not free themselves up. I don’t want to be a problem for the club, but the opposite.”

Xavi added: “Right now, if I think with my head and think about the club, the solution and the best thing is for me to leave in June, that is how I feel.

“We have just agreed that with the president (Joan Laporta). We have a president who is brilliant. Him, Rafa Yuste, (sporting director), Deco…everyone is really capable.

“I think this decision will help unblocking the team and the mood in here.

“I just told the president Laporta now. We’ve had a meeting, it was a very human conversation, just with common sense. The trust from them is still fantastic.

“But I believe this is the moment to say this. I don’t make my decisions following money, my contract will never be a problem.

“I just make my choices following my heart. I don’t need anything more.”

Xavi revealed that he had not told his squad before making his announcement to the media on Saturday evening.

“It’s a cruel job, it wears you down,” Xavi added.

“In Barcelona you always feel like you’re not valued, you’re mistreated — that’s how the club works.

“From a mental health level, it’s tough too.

“I’m a positive guy but the battery levels keep running out — and at some point, you realise there’s no point in staying.”

To the bolded: dang

It's disappointing that it didn't work out better. The Ter Stegen injury this year has been killer and he has been somewhat unlucky with injuries during his tenure, but I think he lacks a lot tactically. Feels like he is often out-coached against other top sides

Isn't Jose already in Barca airport?

His best…. Best in the world IMO. He can take on 3-4 defenders at once and make them look silly.

The Pogba comparison is apt. He COULD be the best in the world, but most games he’s so disinterested and not in form that he’s quite obviously worse than his opposite Pulisic, who doesn’t have the same physical gifts, but gives 100% effort every single time out.

The Gator said:
here we go again. We’re the #2 seed this year, won 5-0, 7-0, 4-2 to get back to the championship game. We play Friday, the team we beat in the semis last year. Should be a crazy game. :banned:

Didn't work out this time.

Lost 1-2 in a very tight game. We were lucky to get some of these kids all on one team together. Not all the time a little 800 person school gets three kids that will go on to play D1 soccer in the same team. Our senior will play at UC Davis next year, and the other two are only sophomores ( :lmao: ), but they will 100% play at the next level. It's been a fun end to my son's high school footy career.
One of the sophomores from this team has just signed with Huntsville City FC. Max Ekk :banned:

Andrew is still at UC Davis playing and the other boy tore his ACL twice and likely won't be advancing his career

Reports:

Cristiano Ronaldo is OUT for Al-Nasser's friendly with Inter Miami, meaning he won't face Messi on Thursday.

Al-Nasser vs Inter Miami was the main event for the Riyadh Season Cup, after being billed as "'The Last Dance' between Messi and Ronaldo.

If Liverpool beat City at home they're winning the league -- this is a deep team. Crazy that Klopp has built such a young, good side and is walking away. Not the usual exit.

Fun stat: Nunez has 10g/10a and has hit the post 13(!) times.

They press like they're on meth. Really crazy energy from them. I understand burnout, but I'm shocked that this young core isn't exciting enough to keep Klopp a few more years.

OMG... hadn't even considered Klopp to the Nats for 2026. But if he wanted to coach a national team I'm pretty sure the German DFB would hire an assassin to remove the incumbent tomorrow.

I think Naglesman's contract expires this summer after the Euros. Germany is hosting so its a huge tournament for them and it would be crazy to replace your coach in May for a tournament that starts in June. In any event, he's said he is burnt out and wants at least a year off. I personally would not want that smug wanker anywhere near the USMNT.

Ends up Messi is not playing either.

Not surprising. Figured a friendly would end up not having him once CR7 was out.
What about the rest of the ex-Barca players?

So, I'm thinking now he IS universally liked except for Cletius.

I think the others played. Al-Nasser is romping 5-0 right now.

Is it a fluke or a fix that the top 4 seeds are playing each other in the quarterfinals of the Asian cup only giving 2 of them a chance to make the semis?
