Those were the games Atlético win last year. I don't think Courtois would have misjudged that free kick.

Third place is a trophy, right?

 
wow... city looked... terrible, IMO. no spacing, no shape, some guys who clearly are a step behind and some guys who are clearly way out of their league (Nemec?... guy up front who destroyed every touch, pass, play he was involved in... and couldn't win an air ball for his life). Villa was completely starved- which was my fear the second they signed him. when city went forward, it was constantly a bunch of guys standing around... pretty bad.

Orlando actually looked decent to me with overall team shape and how well they combined going forward. lots of nice triangles and then space outside. tbh, city had no business getting points out of that.. but a moment of class and lots of brain-farts with the offsides helped.

Kaka looked great.

Thought the refs got it right all night- really glad to see the yellows come out early and often for the dives. Hopefully that continues.

I know it is not fully fair to judge a guy in his first game in a new league but damn, Nemec looked like a complete donkey. Zero mobility. The rookie NY subbed in was a bit of a bull in a china shop but he had some life.

The Ny keeper played well I thought.

Twellman before the game compared Villa to Keane but Keane has ability to drop deep and become a playmaker. Villa is not that type of player. He is really going to need Gerrard.

I do think Lampard and Mix will be good together in the middle.

Overall I really liked Orlando but they have to sort Rivas out. He looks the part but you can't be offside that often. He killed multiple attacks.

Hard to rate Shea because, damn is he enigmatic. He can go one minute looking elegant and skillful, and the next the ball smashes off his shin. He was fine offensively from the left back spot, but with NY having zero width, he was almost never challenged to defend 1 on 1. His defensive positioning was decent from what I could tell.

For years it has been the worst field in the league. It is almost a travesty. It is like playing on cement. I said this earlier but I don't get why this field turf sucks so badly compared to others. The field turf in Orlando today was fine.

Yeah I know, and I have used it. But given the choice between staring at my iPad for two hours or my HDTV, I much prefer the latter.

On some systems, like DirecTV for example, all the EPL games are on TV. They set aside a block of channels for EPL games.

I have Time Warner and there is an entire block of EPL channels. They're like 420-428 in my area; NBCSN is 314.....so if you're just looking around the NBCSN channel, you might not see it.

I think it was very lame. No need for it especially on teams who have never even played yet.

That being said I do have some comments:

*There are two types of expansion teams

a) Teams that buy their way in way with no team in place (examples: TFC, Philly, and NYCFC)

b) Teams that build on current teams who have some level of history (examples: Portland, Seattle, and Montreal)

I feel like Orlando belongs more in group B than in group A.

Orlando built a very nice team on the field in the USL. That team attracted fans, which attracted sponsors, which further attracted the money needed to get into MLS.

Certainly Orlando had to pay an expansion fee to get in, but from my understanding of the situation, they would not have been even considered had it not been for what Orlando City did on the field (which was to win multiple trophies which helped build the fan base to a decent size).

I think they said on the telecast it was the second highest inaugural game attendance ever, only behind LA in the Rose Bowl back in 1996.

They should be an easy 19.5k every game sellout when their new stadium opens next year.

To me it comes across poorly, especially as a studio guy, not a teammate. Its the first goal in their history, Mix scores it and celebrates his team, their first goal, its historical now. I know I am down on LD but it came across as bitter.

They got a franchise because they proved they could bring MLS-sized crowds, even to USL games. Not sure what more a fan base can do to "earn" it, aside from funding the ####### team on kickstarter.

If the Rowdies were filling up Raymond James while OCSC was playing in front of a few hundred people at most, the MLS would have gone to Tampa instead.
