so the other dads at Floppinho's soccer "class" (futsal-derived) are mostly Euros, and there's one guy who's German- the kind that can't admit failure of any kind and is super competitive about everything... even though outside of that he's basically a good dude.
they start talking about the CL games, and mention how well BM actually played, a miss or two from making the game totally different- but then laughed about Boateng's posterizing moment and how that's how he'll likely be remembered. German dude immediately got defensive-

Here, too. I think Europa can be a good thing in the long run for clubs like Swansea and Soton. Even if it was a little amusing to see Spurs and Saints competing for the worst performance against a crappy team this past weekend. The NBC analyst calling the game (Live Extra) said he'd watched Southampton a lot for two years now and that was the worst he'd seen them play in that time.

Marodonna's handball at WC '86 perhaps? For many fans, that might be the first thing they think of. In any case, I agree with the German on this. Zidane- who is my favorite player of all time- will be remembered by that head-butt more than any of billions of amazing plays he made. Baggio... same with him missed PK. Gerrard's slip... not quite on the same level, IMO- and has some game-winners that I remember more. Boateng? tougher for a defender to have a defining play on his resume- but sweet jeebus... I can't remember ever seeing somebody torched as bad as he was there.

1. career defining missteps sim to Baggio or Zidane
2. posterizing moments sim to Boateng's. please provide vids, tia.

Not to take anything away from Leo Messi, but I think the Boateng poster moment has been massively overhyped on social media. He was backing up, turning and just got beat by a very nice, quick move. The fact that he fell over makes it worse of course, but I think he just got wrong-footed. In terms of embarrassing a defender, I thought Messi's nutmeg on Milner last month was worse, although it did not lead to a goal.I don't disagree too much with you. They're good enough to where Europa games probably won't sink them towards relegation, and not good enough to where a lack of Europa games will vault them into the Top 4. Might as well take their shot/have their city trashed by crazy Dutch hooligans.

The UEFA distributions for last year are published here. There is probably some ancillary income in addition to the tournament payout. All but the very worst Champions League teams received more than Sevilla earned for winning the Europa League. I think a CL team has to lose almost every one of its group stage games to earn less than the Europa Champion earns.
