   Brazil, Columbia, Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, Ecuador, and Mexico are all dramatically better than the US and Costa Rica most of the time looks better than us. Getting out of Group A is going to be tough enough even on our home soil.
I've got 20 years of results that say Mexico and Costa Rica are not better than the US in matches that matter.

And I don't think Ecuador is dramatically better.  I did space on Uruguay though and forgot Colombia is supposed to be good again -- so I'll give you five.

By my count the US is either the seventh or eighth best team.  I don't think Costa Rica is better (Costa Rica hasn't been very good since the World Cup).  I do think Mexico is better now, but not by so much that it would be some shock if the US did better than them.  Ecuador is ranked 12 in the world, but I don't trust that ranking.  You take any team ranked from 20-40 or so and I think either could win.

Ecuador plays their home games on top of a gd mountain. We are better than them as long as it's not in Quito.

20 years of past matches has no bearing on the current team and the current Copa. This is a US roster that is struggling with Guatemala in World Cup qualifiers, we are not top 5 in this thing.

only 2 or 3 of these are better than the US? Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Chile, Uruguay? Ok.  Then add Mexico, Ecuador, Costa Rica, Paraguay... all teams the US might beat on a given day, but I would never argue any significant dominance over. The first 5... hoping for the best.

I agree that getting out of this group will be a major win for the US, not a given.

and as long as two of their best players aren't there. and they take the foot off the gas in the second half.

I don't think Ecuador is that much better than the US- but given what I've seen from the before and what I saw last night in the first 40 minutes when players seemed to care and try... they're better no matter where the game is played.

I'd much rather look at a long history of results than a one off in a jungle in Central America.  Mexico and Costa Rica may not be *any* better than the US, and certainly aren't a lot better.  Ditto that for Ecuador IMO.

But yeah, "2 or 3" was underselling Uruguay, Chile and Colombia.

Still, I'd rather be the US playing at home than Paraguay or Costa Rica playing away in this tournament.

Heh... just looked up the odds for our group matches...

USA 37% (30%) 34% Colombia
USA 45% (30%) 25% Costa Rica
USA 47% (29%) 24% Paraguay

We're favored in all three matches.

Anyone else enjoying this Gotze story as much as I am?  Everyone thinks he's set for Liverpool.  He announces he wants to commit his future to Bayern.  And Rumminigge is publicly saying, "WTF, Mario?  You know we think you suck!"

He doesn't want to go to Liverpool.  If a more favorable team can cut a deal with him Bayern might sell him for a steal.  They definitely don't want him to stick around next year and leave on a free.

I'm indifferent about him. Used to a huge name then withered away on Bayern's bench.

I think I rather have Mane, for likely less money, too. The one area they aren't lacking is attacking mids and Mane can play better out wide than Gotze i believe.

LB is interesting as Chilwell is a target, but I hope they go after a bigger first team name and don't rely on him and Gomez.

France will play England in the Toulon Tournament final on Sunday. I think this is U21s. At the last tournament in 2015, the US beat England in the 3rd place game, featuring players like Green and Morris. The US didn't participate this year. I believe the final will be live on BeIn.

I had this set up to record but replaced my dish box and forgot to add it   ..love watching this tournament

England has been surprisingly dominant, 4 wins no losses +12 gd. France is also unbeaten/untied going into the final.

England features 5 Chelsea youts. Your move, Antonio Conte.

Oh,  I don't doubt he'd be a popular acquisition.

Coutinho, Firmino, Lallana are all better on the middle than out wide Ibe has failed to take over the wide player roll that Mane would do well in.

I'd put Gotze third on that list ahead of Lallana,

Mane is probably more money.

I don't think I mentioned this at the time but earlier this season I watched UMaryland host then top-ranked UCLA with an attendance about a thousand over capacity in their soccer stadium that seats around 7,500. It was mostly students at the game, probably more than attend Terps football games. Young people like footy.

My apologies if you've already been asked this, but were there signs of the early success of your local club? I'm stunned -- and pleased -- at the crowds FCC is drawing there in the heart of gridiron country.
Games are great which helps.

Cincy is a big sports town, we just havent had a ton of success to show it off. Reds crowds when they are good are great. I didnt think soccer would do as well as it has but I am happy about it. Would be awesome to be a part of it from the inaugural season. A ton of local people have gotten to play football/soccer at nippert stadium in high school. I think that is neat to tell my kids that I have played sports on the same field as "these guys".

Also, people who live an hour away consider themselves Cincinnati....so we have a huge pool to pull from.

Can't really put my finger on why it's blown up like it has, but it's been awesome.  The Lindner family are great owners (they used to own the Reds here in town) and deserve a ton of credit.  Having Harkes as coach gave the team some credibility too. Also helps that the games are played on a college campus.

It's been a fun ride, I hope it doesn't fizzle out.

Atlanta news

=======================

According to ESPN's John Sutcliffe, Atlanta United are actively pursuing not one but two El Tri stars, naming forward Carlos Vela (Real Sociedad) and midfielder Andrés Guardado (PSV Eindhoven).

Sutcliffe broke the news while reporting from a media event at the site of Mercedes-Benz Stadium ahead of Saturday's match between Mexico and Paraguay at the Georgia Dome. Sutcliffe, who is widely considered one of the the best sources on Mexican soccer, in his report is translated as saying, "I know from good sources they [Atlanta United] are going after Andres Guardado and also, Carlos Vela. They have an advantage as the new LA team (LAFC) will not start until 2018."

It's also interesting hearing all of these names for Hull that I'd been used to hearing regularly in the past: Elmohamady, Livermore,Huddlestone, Snodgrass.

Clemax...judging by Conte's refusal to rotate the squad at Juve, & his habit of shoehorning old, veteran  "has-beens/never-were's" like Motta, Montolivo, Giorladino, etc. into the Azzuri line up, does not bode well for Conte's "next move".  I fear (for your sake) that it will be same/same.  It's amazing to see all the young talent Chelsea has loaned out/sold, never to recoup.

For all you Spurs & ManU fans, just read that both clubs are intent on bidding for Palermo's Franco Vazquez for 15€.  He's one of my favorite Serie A players to watch; extremely underrated b/c he plays at Palermo, but IMO, he is one of the top 3 playmakers in Serie A.  Last year he had Dybala as his strike partner, & his true qualities shone...but he was almost as impressive this year, considering his surrounding cast was gutter trash.  He would be a fantastic fit at Spurs, alongside Alli & Kane.  So sad if Serie A lets another talent go abroad; just hope it's Tottenham, instead of Jose...
