Spurs have raided Soton for the 3rd summer in a row, signing Wanyama today.  He won't be the impact player Alderweireld was, but should give Spurs a much better rotation in the CM positions than last seaspn.

 
So one potential bad (or good depending on your rooting interests) consequence of the Brexit is EPL teams won't be able to sign Euro players until they are 18 while Euro countries can still sign other Euro players at 16.

Liverpool linked to Mane.. which would be a great signing IMO (him and cuteyinho would be pretty scary going forward)- and in-country wouldn't matter what the pound was doing... I think.

How will this affect South Americans and other foreigners trying to get work permits? Easier? Harder?

They're asking 30 million+ (pounds) for him, paid 12. Will be interesting to see how the drop in currency value affects the negotiations.

They actually sold Wanyama to Spurs for a million and a half less than they paid for him in 2013, which I guess means that they got three years out of Victor for half a million a year plus salary. I wonder if they thought they got good value there. Victor's still only 24 or thereabouts. Of course, that's African years.

guessing harder.  Goal.com has an article with the headline "Payet, Bellerin, Kante & Premier League Players who would not qualify for a work permit" 

Under a picture of Martial it lists United players: Martial, Herrera, Januzaj, Schneiderlin, Fosu-Mensa all would have issues getting permits.  

Didnt get into the article yet

ETA just saw another article that clarified.  Players from the EU would now have to go through the same work permit process as any non-eu player does.  So it complicates transfers from Europe but not really anywhere else.

met up with some of the college alum teammates the other night- one of them has started a skills based program out on Long Island (on top of his day job). started with his kids and a few of their friends- 6 total. now has an every night program with over a 100 kids, mostly at the "beta" level. love this much a lot.

I don't think so.  Max Bretos has been calling games and doing SportsCenters during the tournament.  Kate Markgraf and Derek Rae have done the ESPNFC studio show. Darke has been onsite with either Macca or Twellman.  It looked to me that Champion and Robson have been on-site as well.  Bretos, Moreno, Markgraf and others seem to be doing some games remotely.

Setting aside the visceral inclination to bash Liverpool for a moment, I'll make an awkward observation about "athleticism" instead.

Obviously, one of the attractive things about futbol is that it doesn't require the biggest, strongest or fastest athletes to play it at an elite level. So when I bemoan the fact that we don't get our best athletes involved in the sport here, I'm more concerned that a huge pool of coordinated and healthy American yoots never begin dribbling a ball as soon as they can walk or playing countless hours of pickup games in the park. Even with large numbers playing yoot soccer we're not enticing a large percentage of the kids who are able to play whatever game they choose at the highest level. It's a matter of numbers. We're a big country but fractured in our sporting interests in a way that probably impacts footy the most.

I don't mean just the African-American kids in the Deep South and inner cities, either. We also need the other kids of all ethnicities who are playing something else in the neighborhoods around Pittsburgh, East Texas, Southern Cal and all across the Confederacy, kids who grow up in communities where sports is culturally important. We just need a lot more of these kids picking our sport first. 

I won't see this in my lifetime.

Our national team is fast enough and strong enough to compete at an elite level. The only time I've seen us physically second best on the field has been against Ghana. It wasn't an issue in that game and it's not the problem.

Clyne has been a monster since signing with 'Pool and Lovren and Lallana both showed signs of being who we thought they were under Klopp. And now they get some filthy speed in Mane.

Southampton has a reputation for being a solid cultivator of talent. It's not like Liverpool is raiding Dag and Red every year.

I think you will to a certain level, especially as the latino population continues to expand (we are already close to 20% latino now and the projections for growth of that demographic are huge for the next few decades).

Of course our biggest problem here is first finding these kids and then trying to keep Mexican teams away from then.  We have a low score on both points.

Interestingly one of the reasons given for Koeman leaving for Everton is that the cupboard is currently bare of young talent at Southampton.

Right, and with Liverpool poaching Mane and the Spurs stealing Wanyama, can't blame him for jumping ship. Wonder how long Southampton says "mid-table" and doesn't become "relegation candidates".

From January on, I believe Liverpool was the 2nd highest scoring team in the EPL.  Klopp really unlocked the keys to what had been a horrific offense and things were going well.  Adding Mane to that, and taking away European football, should allow Liverpool to score a ton of goals.

Coutinho, Firmino, Mane, Sturridge/Origi...that's pretty potent stuff.

So if LIV can maintain that goal-scoring prowess and concede fewer goals, as you'd hope would happen with the additions of Matip and the GK Karius, than the top four is a strong possibility, as is making a run for the top spot.

Firmihno does nothing for me. Origi still seems like a project. but they have both shown some upside, which would be lethal if it stuck.

Let's not get cazy. 

Beside Lovren nobody took a bigger step forward under Klopp than Lallana. 

Definitely adds the pace Lallana lacks, thought

Glad it's Mane over Goatz, too. 

 
After Messi's announcement last night, England are also set to announce their retirement from international football.
