I think inflation is here and comparisons to 4 years ago are rather meaningless.
I don't think my comparison was meaningless. Specifically, in comparing the Hazard transfer to the Batisyahu rumored transfer, my conclusion was that the inflation in football "is crazy."

My pants are tight with Chelsea anticipation now.  Who wants to guess at what a 3-5-2 would look like?

3: Brana, Zouma, Dave?

5: Willian, Oscar, Cesc, Matic, Hazard?

2: Costa, Traore?
I don't think anyone knows what this guy will do at Chelsea. I don't know much about these different systems, but from watching Italy against Spain I don't think we have a centerback who can play like that - understanding that Zouma is still not fit and won't be ready to start the season. Ake was just loaned to Bournemouth. Chelsea is supposedly making a big push for Koulibaly from Naples, who seems to fit the bill. Maybe they can buy Bonucci. They do have several wingback type players

I think Chelsea is almost certainly buying this summer.  They've been heavily linked with Bonucci.

Wouldn't shock me to see them sell as well.  Could probably get Mourinho to pay for Willian (although I can actually envision Willian as a RWB pretty easily).  PSG would pay for Hazard even if the usual suspects in Spain might be less inclined to meet Chelsea's price.  Matic could probably fund some more additions.

Terry is a better ball-playing CB than either Cahill or Ivanovic, so I wouldn't be shocked to see a resurgence.

Hazard cannot continue playing on the left wing in Conte's 3-5-2. For one its too much ground for him to cover; he'll never be a true 2-way player who fully tracks back. For another, his game took a huge step back last season as teams learned how to prevent his inverted runs from the wing to the center of the box. I also don't see him playing in the center of the midfield . My best guess is that he is used as a second striker next to (or right behind) Batshuayi/Costa. Definitely a make-or-break season for him.

On the wings of the five man midfield, I definitely see Cuadrado coming back to Chelsea and manning one of the two wing back roles. Thats the position he played at Fiorentina. Willian would be a natural candidate for the other Wing Back since he's one of Chelsea's best two way players. Not sure who else would play that role. Bertrand Traore? Baba Rahman? Lichtsteiner?

As for the three-man central midfield, I really have no idea. I feel like Fabregas will man one of the three positions based on some comments to the press but really dont know about the other two. Oscar seems like surplus to requirements. Loftus Cheek looked good during the second half of the year but I dont know how Conte rates him. Matic seems to be on the way out as Conte has pushed hard for Radja Nainggolan, Pogba and now Axel Witsel. Willian could also end up here.

The problem with all of Chelsea's current midfielders is that they are specialists who are favorable either in attack (Oscar, Hazard, Fabergas) or defense (Loftus-Cheek, Matic) but not borth. It feels like Conte wants more two-way players. So there could be a major overhaul here.

Edit: Forgot about Azpilicuetta. He is a prime candidate for a WB role though that would muddle Willian's role in the squad. Unless Conte opts to go with a Willian-Fabregas-XXX midfield.

I forgot that Cuadrado was loaned out to Juve, so many damn players on loan that it's impossible to track

what was everyboyd else's take on Cuadrado?

one second, he looks like a guy nobody on the planet can stop- pacey, strong, crazy skills. the next second, he's dribbling... again... into 3 defenders instead of passing, or just missing the obvious pass. kinda like brek shea. except good.

I didn't understand Cuadrado's failure to fit in at Chelsea because just before that he put that Fiorentina team on his back and carried them further than I thought they had a right to go. He was end line to end line for 90 minutes.

There was just no room for him in Mourinho's three man midfield and he was too expensive to sit on the bench.

Not sure, I've watched the entire video twice but had the sound muted both times.  :bag:

Canada runs a tournament each year consisting of only Canadian based teams to determine their entry in the Concacaf Champions League.

This years final was between Toronto and Vancouver over two legs.

TFC won the first leg at home 1-0.

Vancouver was winning the second leg 2-0 until the 95th minute when Will Johnson scored for TFC and grabbed the away goal to book their ticket into the 2017/2018 CCL.

Don't like away goals

Don't like away goals
I was wondering where and when this rule came into being.

It was first introduced by UEFA in 1965.

Brazil has an interesting side rule that if both teams playing share the same stadium, they will not use the away goal rule.

I also saw the interesting bit of history of the away goal rule being used incorrectly

=======================================

There has been at least one case of a wrong application of the away goals rule by a referee in an international club tournament. It happened in a second-round tie in the 1971–72 European Cup Winners' Cup between Rangers and Sporting Clube de Portugal. This fixture had the following scorelines:

  • First leg: Rangers 3 – 2 Sporting
  • Second leg, after 90 minutes: Sporting 3 – 2 Rangers
  • Second leg, after extra time: Sporting 4 – 3 Rangers
Since the teams were now level 6–6 on aggregate, the Dutch referee Laurens van Raavens ordered a penalty shootout, which Sporting won 3–0. Rangers appealed the loss, however, on the grounds that Van Raavens should not have ordered the shootout, since the Rangers goal in extra time in Lisbon gave them a lead of three away goals to two. Rangers won the appeal and went on to win the Cup Winners' Cup that season.

Jesus, weren't these guys just in a very recent Europa League final?

========================

The football club Dnipro has ceased to exist.

According to the team's unofficial website (http://fcdnipro.com/), citing its own sources, businessman Ihor Kolomoisky has refused to pay off any of the team's debts and decided to disband the club.

"Our Dnipro football team is finished. No one will pay anything. The team no longer exists. However, Dnipro Arena stadium will not be empty: the possibility of bringing in another team, either FC Volyn [Lutsk], or FC Naftovyk (Okhtyrka, Sumy region) or organizing another club with ties to the Privat network of companies [co-owned by Kolomoisky] is being considered,"

Oh snap, I misread the scoreline and was positive that the Cosmos advanced to play the Union!  I was looking forward to that match.
