Question for all you Arsenal/Barcelona fans, concerning cb Vermaelan(?)...Roma has recently been linked with him as a Rudiger(out till October) replacement...knowing full well he has his own injury problems, just how talented is he, & would he be worth an 8-10 mil investment?  Spaletti is desperately looking for a CB that can play the ball out from the back... I haven't really seen him play, does his talent & distribution make up for his other inadequacies?  He obviously won't have any resale value at his age...
I haven't seen him much for Barcelona, but I never really had much of a problem with him at Arsenal.  I used to think Wenger was nuts for starting Mertesacker over him when Mertesacker first joined Arsenal, especially considering Vermaelen was Arsenal's captain at the time.  He was hurt a bit at times but he seemed like he had a nice partnership with Koscielny, though they seemed to occupy a similar role as the ball-winning, more agile CB (in comparison to Mertesacker, at least) and Koscielny ultimately won the spot.  I always thought he had pretty decent ball skills for a center-back and was surprisingly good going forward.

Checking my email today, got an email from our local NPSL team (4th tier of US soccer pyramid).  Kinda terrible quality video - what do you expect from a 4th-tier league - but have a look at this goal from this past weekend's game.  Hell of a shot.  This made it 3-2 in the 76th and they got another later on to earn the 3-3 draw.

It just sucks that Roma have to constantly sell to balance the books/FFP, & look for stopgaps, while Juve consistently improve/interchange their lineup, due to their fiscal prowess.  I can't stress enough how much the stadia situation in Italy impacts Serie A.  Once Roma can circumvent the absurd red tape of Italian beurocracy, & build their own stadium, the margin for error will hopefully decrease.

Jesus what a mess in Argentina.  The entire Argentine coaching staff just resigned saying

"Due to uncertainty over the designation of new authorities in the Argentine Football Association and the serious problems in putting together the team that will represent the country in the Olympic Games, the staff have chosen to resign."

========================

There is a chance Argie will not field in a team in the summer Olympics because of the mess at the federation level.

Nobody has seen Vermaelen a lot for Barcelona.  He's made a grand total of 11 appearances.

Vermaelen flashed potential at Arsenal but fell victim to the Captain's curse, where getting the armband made a player:  1) play like crap; and 2) behave like a locker room cancer.  It's great fun.

In any case, while Mertesacker took a little time to acclimate to the BPL, it's clear that the BFG/Kos partnership was much better than the Vermaelen/Kos partnership.   Vermaelen had a nasty habit of getting caught upfield.  He does have good ball skills, which is how he won over Arsenal fans in the beginning.  I would be reluctant to pay 10 million for a player whose upside is a nice 15 to 20 games.

When he has been on the field for Barcelona, he has been fantastic.  Looked like the best CB in the squad at the start of the 15-16 campaign.  ####er just cannot stay healthy.
Completely this.

Jordan Ibe to Bournemouth for £15 million. Pool shopping Skittles to Fenerbahce and Joe Allen to Sevilla. The Kloppster is getting ready to go big-time shopping, isn't he?

"big-time shopping"... :kicksrock: ...whilst other team's fans anticipate the transfer season, Roma fans dread it.  "Who we gonna sell to balance the books?"...Pontius "Pjanic" Pilate chose to leave for JuveMerda, no less...& that sale was just to cover failure for direct qualification for CL.  ####### BPL & their fancy TV deals :wall: ...

I know it's all rumor and bullocks but man do I have a massive boner right now:

Jorge Messi, the father and representative of five-time Ballon d'Or winner Lionel Messi, has held negotiations with Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich concerning the Barcelona No. 10's potential departure from the Camp Nou, the Sun reported.

With Messi being handed a 21-month jail sentence (he's unlikely to serve any time) and a €2 million fine for tax fraud, the Sun reported that the Argentine has felt that Barcelona haven't been as supportive as they could've been throughout the ordeal. The West London club reportedly have kept a close eye on developments in the case and were alerted to the possibility of Messi's departure.

Should "La Pulga" leave the Catalan giants, Chelsea would reportedly find themselves in pole position for his signature. The subsequent transfer fee would "smash the £100 million mark," the Sun said.

I'm not even sure if that's good or bad anymore...fair price?... Remember, you're also paying for the pleasurable ambiance & atmosphere....
They do have a special Category 4 for Russian citizens only where a Ticket to the Final game costs roughly $110 - but I imagine those seats are probably somewhere in Siberia in front of a frozen big screen.

I was more or less curious as to how they matched up with the COPA tickets here, but I did not pay too much attention to those prices.  Just knew there was some grumbling about prices.

The cheapest ones are 3-4x the price of the NYC Copa tickets and that includes the Final.

Absurdity.  Then again, judging on their hosting of the past Winter Olympics, we know that their hotel accommodations will be top notch; just be wary of their wild dogs....they've been known  "to pick a pocket or two"...

Adrian Heath is the first MLS coach (Orlando) to get sacked this season.   There are a few others like Jay Heaps who are close to getting tossed

==================

Ever since the deluge of articles came out proclaiming Lampard as the worst signing in the history of MLS, he has actually performed fairly well.  Certainly nothing that would justify his cost, but more then enough to be a decent DP level player if he can sustain this.  He has even picked up a few strange goals along the way.

Here is his less than elegant goal last night that ended up being the game winner.

Yeah.  Pirlo being Pirlo as well with that initial cheeky chip.  Pirlo is really fun to watch.

It seems better to be a seller than a buyer these days. 15mil is the going rate for a completely unproven fringe player (with potential!); 45 mil for a mediocre midfielder who would have cost 10-15 two summers ago.

This is an impressive number for 3rd division in the US

I had a Russian tell me it is common practice for places to charge foreigners more for basically everything. His wife is Russian and said she used to get #### if she bought two of something and then gave one to him, the foreigner.

Leicester finalized their deal to bring in Nigerian winger Ahmed Musa from CSKA for £16M.   He's shown skill and pace when I've watched him with the Super Eagles but he's not very big.  Maybe the physicality of the Russian league is good prep for the EPL.

If Southampton gets £13 million from a Chinese club for Pelle, Saints are net up close to £50 million right now without any glaring holes in the lineup. I wonder how many decent guys they can get with that to help them through a minimum of six extra European games.

Latest (very faint) rumor is that Cedric better not be signing any long term leases with south coast landlords.

Never been so pissed at a player than when he let the ball bounce over his head against Poland for Poland's first goal.

Dude puts in a wicked cross though

Mane with more far post runs in the first half than Liverpool had all last season

neat
We haven't had threat since Sterling.  I like how he exploded upfield when he got the ball.  I think we dilly-dallied a bit more than Klopp would have liked last season and didn't have the pace to quite carry out his vision of an offense. (though we were still quite potent in the 2nd half of the year)

Inorite that was a bad misjudgment. But I thought the kid was an important cog during the late season charge. Gets forward a lot but tracks back with vigor. Fit in well.
