Football for sale | What the Telegraph investigation will reveal

The Telegraph began investigating corruption in English football last year after receiving information that specific managers, officials and agents were taking or receiving cash payments to secure player transfers. Over the coming days the Telegraph will detail how:
  • The assistant manager of a high-profile football club accepted a £5,000 cash “bung”
  • Ten managers were named by players’ agents as taking bribes to fix player transfers
  • Two well-known managers discussed becoming ambassadors for the same fictitious firm as Sam Allardyce
  • Another high-profile manager admitted his players broke FA rules by betting on their own games but he failed to report it
  • A senior figure at a Premier League club helped undercover reporters to formulate a plan to bribe managers
in my day, bungs weren't more than a grand.

lol.... well, which one is it sonny- you want I should lie down, or you want I should freeze?
It does not seem like much of a story to me...of course, more has been dripping out since it first broke.

I'd say the FA has a bit of an uncontrolled wildfire on its hands right now.

If he was Pep or a big name, he might survive, but he's not...so he won't.  He's just not worth the headache.

EDIT: and I think they have to go with a non-English manager at this point.

btw- speaking of scandals... I guess Vardy has a book out- and I guess the summer before their miraculous run to a title, he went on lovely drunken rant at a japanese guy in a casino, calling him "***" a few times and threatening to beat people up.

he's really sorry, guys. he's not a racist- just "ignorant".

now... go buy this racist's book, ok?

all this talk about Rashford- but nobody's making the argument that he should sit and get eased into things because he's only 18. I guess that's just an american problem.
anybody have a thought about this?

english and everybody else's teenagers are good to go, but not the US?

Everybody made that argument at the Euros.

Its still kind of an open question at the national team level. Rashford played with U23s in the last break.
but rashford has been playing for MU... as Rooney did for Everton (at 16, IIRC) as did Walcott for Saints (15 or 16, IIRC).

I'm too lazy to go back and review the Euros discussion... was it basically that if the kid can show they can play at that level, they should play at that level?

Worst part of the possible fall out from the Big Sam issue is exepecting another round of JK to England rumors (from both sides).

Many Euro countries use the general motto "if you are good enough, you are old enough"

Our obvious problem in the US is the first half of that motto.

I don't think Pulisic's minutes with Dortmund are limited because he is 18. Dembele is a teenager getting more minutes.

Rasford got his shot at Man U because of injuries. Lots of managers (Roy, Mourinho) have hesitated to start him. But the guys in front of him have struggled and he's produced. That's true of Pulisic for the Nats too, but with Dortmund CP is going to have to keep producing and some other guys are going to have to not produce.

Wait, will he get a 4 game ban for that?

The sad thing about the state of the FA and this Allardyce controversy is that the actual team is becoming quite talented.  When you look at how Pep has revitalized Sterling, the emergence of Rashford, you see a team that could really make some noise at the WC.
No.

so.. yes.

I'm just asking- and I'm sorry I missed the previous discussion- because every time I see analysts talk about CP here in the states (the usual half-time and post-game suspects), the same discussion comes up about tempering expectations and not rushing him.

seems like the same analysts don't worry or notice about the euro players doing the same thing.... just wanted to see what the prevailing mood was in here.

IMO- if he's good enough to get on the field, and can somehow win a spot through quality or circumstance... let him play, regardless of age. if he starts to show signs he can't handle it- sit him back down and help get him to a place where he can... fewer minutes, limited role, b-squad, whatever.

This discussion was started by @gianmarco who felt Pulisic should have started in the Copa. I was pointing out that Rashford had pretty much the same experience in the Euros.

ah thanks.,

lol- and I was even part of that discussion :bag: . I was firmly in the "if he's not starting, there's a reason he's not starting" camp...defensive/team understanding and capabilities is what I recall citing, as well as limited minutes in the Bundesliga not necessarily translating to whatever JK needs from his players at the national level. I hadn't seen enough to personally gauge whether his skill-set was the type to compare to the types of players starting for the US.

but now, I've seen enough more of him going forward at this point to not care what I said over the summer about defensive responsibilities (which seem decent and intuitively astute for him)... so I've changed my position.

I think everyone is now convinced Pulisic should start for the Nats unless he's rotting on the bench with Dortmund. But I don't think it was wrong to have him earn that spot with his appearance.

Solid:

Lifelong Manchester United fan Patrick Lawler got to meet his heroes in a dying wish that came true – before passing away 45 minutes later.

Ashley Young, Marcus Rashford, Jesse Lingard and Timothy Fosu-Mensah all visited the 73-year-old after his grand-daughter Kayleigh made an appeal on Facebook.

Mr Lawler, who was battling prostate cancer, wanted to meet his favourite players before he died.

The four Premier League players visited him in his home, posed for pictures and signed autographs. Under an hour later, Mr Lawler died.

Sorry, buddy....but NT is a whole different animal...the 'Ainglish all have to play together, instead of with other international (EPL) talents, & other international coaches.

:( ...but also,

Oh, & buon cumpleano, "Checco", "Il Bimbo d'Oro", "Il Re di Roma", "Er Pupone", "Il Gladiatore"...40 years young today... .  Long live the Giallorossi #10, and the last of the true "trequartistas".

This is such an impressive get for any MLS team, much less an expansion team

===============

Former Barcelona and Argentina coach Gerardo "Tata" Martino was named to coach Major League Soccer expansion side Atlanta United on Tuesday.

Atlanta's hiring of Martino, first reported by Telemundo, comes as the team prepares for its inaugural MLS season in 2017.

"We are delighted that a manager of Gerardo's caliber and pedigree will be leading our team into our inaugural season," Atlanta United president Darren Eales said."His deep experience and success at both the club and international levels speak for itself, and his vision and approach aligns very well with our club philosophy.

"We're confident in his ability to help build a winning culture both on and off the pitch."

Martino has been out of work since resigning as Argentina's manager following the 2016 Copa America Centenario earlier this summer.

He blamed his decision to resign on the chaos surrounding the leadership of the Argentina Football Association, which has been in turmoil since the death of president Julio Grondona in 2014, with Luis Segura resigning as president earlier in the year following his arrest on fraud charges.

"I'm very happy to join Atlanta United as the first head coach in club history," Martino said. "This is an exciting time for MLS and I'm looking forward to the challenge of leading a team in an evolving league.

"Atlanta United is a first-rate organization, and I'm very eager to get working and build one of the top clubs in MLS."

Matt Law ‏@Matt_Law_DT  7m7 minutes ago

I expect Sam Allardyce to be sacked tonight.

Matt Law ‏@Matt_Law_DT  5m5 minutes ago

Or come to a 'mutual agreement' to leave his post. Either way I think Allardyce will leave his job as England manager tonight
