There's a rumor that Simeone will jump ship from Atlético to the Prem at the end of this season.  I honestly don't see why that would happen unless Arsenal part ways with Arsene, and that would be a poor stylistic match for that club.
I would pay to watch a Hard Knocks style show where Simeone tries to get Walcott, Ox and Giroud to play his system.

Imo arsenal's style is Wengers style, it's not a way of playing that's associated with the club like at Barcelona. They played practical football before Wenger/Bergkamp and could do so again after he's gone.

Thank you for purchasing the New York City FC Ticket Package for the match on Sunday, October 23rd against the Columbus Crew. Your package includes one New York City FC scarf per seat purchased.

When you arrive at Yankee Stadium on Sunday please remember to stop by Will Call, windows 5 or 6 to pick up your tickets and a voucher for the scarf. The voucher will have the exact details regarding where/how to redeem the scarf.

Ozil too.  Plus a bunch of marginal defenders.  And a fan base that's gotten to watch slick movement and passing for like 20 years now.

Not seeing it.  Maybe he can go to United after Mourhino teaches Old Trafford the beauty of 11 men behind the ball.

ok, here is a very odd story.

Kid playing keeper in the US, dives out for a ball, gets kicked in the head.

He immediately goes unconscious and stops breathing and eventually lapses into a coma.

After several days in a coma, he awakes.   And he starts speaking only fluent Spanish (which he could not do before he went into the coma).

I did not think they would break their average attendance record again this year, especially with Dallas having reduced capacity and the expansion teams no longer having the new ##### attraction.

Paul Kennedy@pkedit

.@MLS breaks record for most fans in single day: 283,807 on #DecisionDay. And breaks record again for average attendance in season: 21,690.

Dallas wins their first Supporter Shield

Bradley Wright Phillips gets the Golden Boot as top scorer

Chicago wraps up their second straight Wooden Spoon

Two scarves and a poster obtained.
A David Villa goal scored in front of him.
Popcorn and 2 hot dogs eaten.

Overall a successful day.

Real notes:
  • Whatever it is, Villa still has it
  • NYCFC plays this weird 3-2-2-3 now so they get Allen and more importantly Matarrita to interplay with Villa.
  • It allows NYCFC to control the wings, but the entire center of the pitch is open since Pirlo can't cover any ground anymore.
  • Villa is good
  • Lampard and Villa really like each other.  I won't be shocked if Lampard decides to come back for another year even if it is a something like a target-ish forward.
  • Shelton continues to improve and is starting to understand how to use his size.  Coupled with his speed it's a dangerous combination especially as a sub when the other team is tired.
  • 30K tickets sold
  • Villa is so clinical that it covers up a lot of other issues on defense.

villa is the anti-typical over the hill guy who comes to mls. never stops and seems to care more than anybody on the field. just amazing to watch.

where did you end up sitting? when I went to that last game, I realized that seats down the 1st base line- behind the goal opposite the supporters' section- are probably about as good as it gets (along with the area around the supports section).

what did you think of Harrison in person?

He is so similar to Keane in that respect.  It is also great because both are such strong spokesmen for the league when talking to other Euro guys who inquire what it is like.

@Sammy3469 Do you think the skinny formation is due to the very small field at Yankee stadium or do they play that when away as well?
I'm not describing the formation well....they play almost exclusively "wide" and leave the center of midfield decidedly open with Bravo/Pirlo perched in front of the CBs.  There's loads of space in front of those 2 and against good teams on bigger fields they get exploited (hell they get exploited at Yankee stadium as well, it's just a tad easier to cover up).  Pirlo can't cover space anymore, so they tend to cede it and look to counter out wide.  Both Matarrita and Allen are more than capable wingbacks and can generally shut things down out wide.  Teams exploit them up the middle and a wide field just gives teams more room to do that there.

Look this would be a bad team if Villa wasn't so creative and clinical.

Ah, the old "empty bucket."  A favorite of Football Manager players going into tough away fixtures for years.

The idea, as I understand it, is to cede possession in areas where it's not meant to hurt you so much.  You stay compact deep, but keep enough players high to make the counter a legitimate threat.

See, learning crap like this is why I hang out here. I just have the fuzziest understanding of all these tactical things, like figuring opposing teams let Cuco Martina bomb forward unimpeded because he'll do the offense more harm than good up there.

I got this from a Football Manager message forum.  Never thought it had application in actual real life tactics.  Obviously playing the deep block for extended periods of time is easier said than done.

But one thing that seems to really be emphasized recently (or I'm just now noticing it) is the importance of keeping enough players high in order to counter effectively.  I think that's happened as teams have begun to accept that possession's correlation to results is weak.

They are building the new Hall of Fame which attaches directly to one of the stands.  that stand has been closed the entire season significantly lowering their stadium capacity until the construction is finished.
Ah.  Makes sense, thanks.

I'm heartbroken about Diaz's injury (and Castillo forcing himself out, for that matter).  Maybe Dallas can still do a triple (the quad seems way too much to ask for), but it would have been nice to see them try with their two best players.

You guys are single handily ruining Paul Gardners books sales of "The Simplest Game" :)

This is what they do without Lampard.  With him they play a more convention 4 across the back with 3 across the middle (Lamp, Pirlo, Iroala) and have a tad more cover in the midfield (or as much cover as a pair of 37 and 38 year old legs can give).

However, the one thing they always do is have 3 forwards and look to counter.

I think the run may be coming to an end as Diaz is so important to their team.

No team has done the triple ever in MLS have they?

They did get a good draw though in the CCL quarter finals so they could have a chance to advance there if they can get healthy and figure out how to get into at least early season form in the preseason.

One thing as a US fan I will be watching very closely is that many think Paxton Pomykal, the 16 year old jewel from their academy system, might be ready next season for extended minutes.

The New York Red Bulls 2 won the USL Championship yesterday becoming the first MLS controlled club to do so.

This may be a sign of things to come as both clubs in the final were MLS owned (Swope Park is owned by Sporting KC).

pretty good year for the RBs too... stache, wright-flipper, and a fun young local-hero player in Muyl.

Alright, fellow FBG soccer fans:

My son's club is doing a raffle for a car.  It's pretty straight forward and you can read about it here

If anyone is interested, just PM me and I can send the direct link for the ticket purchase that helps him (and mostly the club) out.

Hope you guys don't mind me posting this here.

Isn't giving away that car like giving away a Samsung Note 7?  Doesn't VW have to sell Wolfsburg because of their recall?

First 9 league matches under Moyes - POINTS: 14

At least Moyes had the benefit of a huge transfer spend before his first season...oh, wait, I have that backwards...

Haphazard musings:

1. Alex Ferguson was manager of ManU for five years before winning his first league title? I've been a pretty consistent proponent of giving managers more time to implement things and I think stability at the top matters but wow.

2. Leipzig is second in Bundesliga. I've been following (a little) that league for all of about 16 months but wtf?

Man U hadn't won a league title since 1967 by then.  And Ferguson won a good bit of other silverware (an FA Cup, a league Cup, and a European Cup Winners Cup).  He probably wasn't any more successful than his predecessor, Ron Atkinson (who won 2 FA Cups), at first, but he also never really had Man U in the relegation places the way Atkinson did when he was fired.

It's a great time for rasenballsport.

Fourteen games in Leeds is only three points out of a playoff position. Portsmouth is actually fifth in League Two.

More random jumbled thoughts that make only me happy.

It looks like Chivas - Mexico's most popular club - is going to split from the Univision contract and offer a separate online streaming subscription at $12/mo starting in 2018.  The club has done the same in Mexico, apparently successfully. They sell single games and longer subscriptions. This seems to be the future of sports programming, and perhaps the future of all television programming.  http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2016-10-24/soccer-s-chivas-plans-to-leave-univision-rattling-tv-landscape

ugh. capital U.

means for the casual fan of teams, but fan of the sport, we'll be SOL.

Maybe SOL, but it seems equally or more likely we'll all be better off as this inevitable media shift moves forward. I pay $35/mo for Playstation Vue right now, which is much cheaper than what I was paying for cable and I get better soccer coverage than I had. Its only going to get better and cheaper imo as the providers figure out where the markets are and start putting together packages that meet the demand.  That said, $7-$27 for a single Chivas game in Mexico seems ridiculous, and $12/mo. strikes me as pretty steep to only get one team's games.
