The real issue in China is that if the next guy in charge of the Government decides against supporting the league, it could collapse over night.  They have no where near the revenue generation needed to support these kind of expenditures.
True, but I got a rise out of El Floppo.

exactly- that's what I thought I said in the other post. but still trying to thaw out, so not sure.

and obviously this is a different China than the one that defaulted on payments to Anelka and Drogba... right?

That club (Shanghai Shenua (??? or somethinglikethat) had a rocky period with fractured ownership disputes and such. They got new owners and I think are doing fine now - Demba Ba, Freddy Guarin and some other stars from the West.

I haven't followed it closely, but didn't realize its a government supported, or single-owner league. I've always thought the owners are super-rich Chinese dudes and their companies. Its definitely not the more traditional fan-supported ownership groups where the spending has to be supported by revenues.

Yeah, but a lot of these guys companies are propped up by lending from the government in one form or another.  Put it this way, they aren't doing it without the OK from Beijing.

China is not exactly known for huge swings in government. They've committed to $850 billion in investment in domestic sports in an effort to lure the World Cup to China (also, any doubt that Gianni's 48 team proposal is an attempt to try to get China or India or both into a World Cup?).  Even if Jiping dies or something, I don't see a new leader losing face by cancelling that type of national prestige investment.

In the case of Oscar, Shanghai SIPG is owned by the Shanghai Port Authority, which is in turn majority owned by the City of Shanghai.  I've read reports that the Port Authority owners aren't keen on spending this type of coin on football, but they're being overruled by the City government.

my understanding from an old article was that the Gov was pumping a lot of money into the league because there were one or maybe a few people in the gov who wanted to. gist of the article was that once those people are gone, it's likely the money being pumped in will stop- which will cause the league.. or at least current bonzai buying...  to fail.

One thing to note from Chelsea's perspective. We all scratch our heads when the club buys players like Pato or Miazga on the same day, or gets 50m Euros for Luiz then buys him back a few years later to fill a need on the last day of the transfer window. When you think those deals don't make sense, remember that the same quasi-agent that reps those players also has Ramires and Oscar, who went to China for over 80mil pounds when neither was playing for club or country. Kia Joorabchian reportedly earned over 10mil Euros when Chelsea bought Ramires from Benfica for 22mil. He's a shady guy, but works hard and seems to have great relationships in Brazil, several English clubs and more recently the US and China. Chels and Joorabchian have done very well for each other over the past 5 years or so.

Money galore, but is the market real

  • Detroit
  • Cincy
Not sure why you would lump Cincy into a pot of "is the market real"

Its probably the most-tested market in terms of people supporting a local team - tremendous attendance numbers consistently throughout season for USL franchise.  Combine that with a built-in rivalry with Columbus, and I think the only thing standing in the way of a Cincinnati is a soccer-only stadium.  I think I read in the article above that the USL franchise is spending $2M to help widen the UofC football stadium - so they need to consider that investment, if there will be a centrally located soccer stadium.

   I don't scratch my head.  I just assume every Chelsea transaction is Russian money laundering

"from an old article"...

I'm a #####.

At first I thought you should go with Everton as United fans rank only below Liverpool fans in terms of #### but then I realized you are just doing this to bug Gator so to hell with it, go United. Also, please remind him about Gerrard slipping and Suarez leaving as often as humanly possible

I think I'm ready to get more serious about soccer watching, however I don't have a team.

If someone could tell me who @The Gator likes the most, then who the team which that team considers it to be their rival I will go with that one.  Ideally will come in with extremely ill-informed points that both irritates and occupies his time.

Your attention to this matter is appreciated.
This is who the  @The Gator likes the most and his nemesis is shirts.

These words from Garber sound like they are getting ready to tell Becks to #### or get off the pot in the very near future............

===============

“We have a lot invested in it because of the amount of time we’ve spent on it,” Garber said of the 20-team league. “Everybody needs to understand, including David and his partners, that we’ve worked hard, and it’s time for us to reach a conclusion.”

“I’ve also learned, having done this a long time, that not everything you want to do gets done,” Garber said. “Sometimes you have to take a step back, and if you can’t get it done, you move on."

Liverpool.

Natural rivals are Manchester United and Everton. Man U is the better choice for shtick.

Youll need to learn their best player, Maroune Fellaini. :fro:
I cant wait for the Fro to be Liverpool's best player.

Quite frankly, I'm quite perturbed by all the Gatorhade that has been so prevalent around here.  I, for one, stand by my Portuguese fratello, & cast aspersion upon all you...besmirching the name of such a fine fellow.  Shame! Shame!  Name me one amongst you who could make a finer Bloody Mary, or a finer homoerotic ode to Christianaldo?

I mean alcoholic beverages and homoerotic odes are kind of my thing
"*clears throat*"... "homoerotic"...I see I overstepped my boundaries...ok, I shall leave it at that...

Really kind of irritates me.

I wish there was a way I could put everything but the soccer threads on ignore.  But I do enjoy some friendly banter/discussion in some other threads from time to time.  Poor form to wipe out threads - even when there was no offensive posts.  Its typically the same few posters/aliases that cross the line.  Just ban them, and not the conversations.  Comes across as very childish...ironically.

Agree but probably best not to say much more here.

We need a contingency plan in place in case this all goes belly up. Where should we meet and gather if that happens?

Time to update?

International - How can any of you like someone other than USMNT?!?! :hot:

EPL - Watford. I am a closet Chelsea fan, but can't go on record since my youngest likes them and my oldest hates them. I'd be picking sides if I came out.  Diego Costa and Willian

Bundesliga - Dortmund

MLS - Philly Union

ASL - Delaware Stars FC

Yes

There's an avatar requirement, though. CR7 shirtless or holding the European championship trophy.

Anything else brings the ban hammer

This word. I do not think it means what you think it means.
