Pretty sure I've argued more with my Dad about the merits of Simon Mignolet than about him dumping my Mom in a nursing home (my dad, Simon Mignolet, for all his faults, is blameless on this account).

Dad:  "That Mignolet is good. I saw him make this save where ..."

Me:  "You get that's like 30%, max, of being a good modern goalkeeper, right?"

HOT TAKE ALERT:  The only thing that has made United a 43 point team and not a 37/38 point team like LiFC and Spurs is De Gea.  I think he's probably been worth close to 5 pts in the table by himself this year.

I mean, I absolutely love the way Ederson is playing (his distribution is flat out amazing, like Pirlo wearing gloves), but De Gea is just head and shoulders above everybody at preventing goals himself.
You aren't entirely wrong about De Gea being worth 5+ points.  However the Pogba and Bailley injuries have to be looked at and I think may be worth 6-8 points as well.  Puts United 7-9 points back instead of 15... So it goes both ways.

Two tweets from Merrit Paulson(Timbers owner) that he ended up deleting.

1) Not sure when you will find out but hoping to have both signed (one is already signed and one is agreed to and waiting contract) by end of day tomorrow. Shocked no leaks on the attacker. Announcements would be next week

2) Will be more than 2 signings. And probably more than 2 TAM signings. But these two would be a great start

love seeing these.

their collective movement and spacing is amazing- crazy seeing on screen how many different players pop up on the flank closer the camera... those guys are rotating up and back, but also across the width of the field (eta: so much of which is happening off camera). and all without leaving spaces or gaps uncovered... just amazing.

Pep apparently teaches movement and interchanges for like 18 discrete portions of the pitch.  I have no idea if he could coach this stuff with more ordinary players, but it is simply beautiful to watch with players like Silva and DeBruyne.  I thought tiki taka eventually became kind of sterile and passive but this is like peak 2009 Barca where every pass had a purpose.  I'm still a guy who loves counter attacking teams, but this is just the most pleasing football I've ever seen in the Premiere League.  And they do it everywhere. At home.  On a rainy night in Stoke.  Doesn't matter.  They'll just hog possession and leave you chasing shadows for 90 minutes.

It's the time of year that I like to unveil the RHE Best XI for the first half of 2017.  Unlike many other Best XIs, I try to put together a team that I think would actually work in a game.  Formation is a simple 4-3-3 with one DM (although I also employ a ball-winning box to box midfielder to compliment my central playmaker).  Because of Real's indifferent form this year, Ronaldo, Kroos, and Modric don't make it, but I do have one Blanco on the list.

                     Kane

Neymar                             Messi

              Kante   DeBruyne

                   Casemiro

Alba    Hummels   Pique     Kimmich

                     DeGea

As always, I find defense hardest to pick.  I didn't have any restrictions on how many could come from one team, but this is my shot at doing one where a team can only have one player.  This was really hard.  Don't bust on me for putting Messi back on the left where he hasn't played in years.

                      Cavani

Messi                                    Salah

             Kante             DeBruyne

                      Casemiro

A. Sandro   Alderweireld   Godin    Kimmich

                         DeGea

Actually, I think this works better for the only one player per team XI.

                          Icardi

Neymar                                   Messi

             Kante             DeBruyne

                       Casemiro

A. Sandro   Alderweireld   Godin    Kimmich

                         DeGea

No Coutinho?
He's been very good this season, but I think Salah has been, by far, the best Liverpool player.  He also kind of doesn't fit my formation, because I don't really have a LM or #10 role.  I also don't think that Coutinho has been the best player in the PL at that position this year.  I think that's been David Silva, who has taken his habit of quietly having really great years to having an unbelievable year but still being under the radar.  I imagine Kante is a controversial choice because he hasn't seemed as influential this year.  But he's still recording tons of interceptions and tackles a game and passing in the high 80s in percentage.  Not sure I need overwhelming offensive numbers when I have that type of top 3 and DeBruyne.  Lots of tough cuts at MF.  Isco, Coutinho, Pogba (has been excellent when healthy this year).

Kante and Casemiro? Seems like one of them could give way to Silva or Pogba.
Kante isn't really a defensive midfielder.  He's a box to box ball-winning midfielder.  I think the ability to win the ball in higher positions is more valuable than having another playmaker on this team. Pogba's skillset is too similar to DeBruyne's IMO and I'm not sure that for this half season, Pogba has been better than Paulinho who has exceeded all expectation for Barca.  I think Kante is still indisputably the best at the specific role he plays.  Not all teams have a place for that role, but this team, IMO, would.

Well, could argue Salah should be there as well then.

It is interesting to consider which player has been better between the 2.  Watching them play, Salah seems to always be involved, is so dangerous with his pace, and his total numbers are fantastic at this point.  In the PL, 15 goals and 5 assists in 20 games (75 shots).  Coutinho has only played in 13 games and has 7 goals and 6 assists on 50 shots.

Both guys are averaging 1 goal/assist per game and 3.5 shots/game.  I think the fact that Coutinho missed the first few games has him overshadowed by Salah a bit despite his reputation.

Crazy that Mane and Firmino aren't even remotely in the conversation to be top 2 on their team.  And that Aguero/KDB/Sterling/Silva/Sane still outclass them as a group, though not by much.

Speaking of a rainy night at Stoke...

You realize that's an onion article and not real, right? Did you read to the end?
:yawdrop:

So Migs didn't just sign a new 5 year contract?

“I owed it to the fans,” Mignolet told Soccer on Sunday. “It would kill them if I left. Every time I’m out walking my dog Howler, people come up and ask, ‘When are you going to sign a new contract?’ It’s not just Liverpool fans, it’s Everton fans too. Now that I think of it, it might only be Everton fans. Not sure what that’s about, but it just shows how I’ve brought the city together. I’m sort of a white Nelson Mandela in Liverpool.

“I want to finish my career here,” said the Belgian. “It feels amazing to be a fan favourite. When I cost the team points every couple of weeks, they’re always there to pick me up with that famous Scouse wit. ‘#### off home you butterfingered ####ebag’. ‘Please just die you Hitler Youth-Milky Bar Kid-looking pox bottle’. Things like that. Great banter.”

“That’s why I can never leave,” he added. “I promise the fans, I will always be here.”

Kane is the living embodiment of how stupid scouts are.  They say he's not fast, but he seems to get behind defenders pretty regularly.  They say he can't create for himself, but he seems to pull off a handful of goofy goals from weird positions every year.  And other than that, he's just a guy who seems to always make the right runs and finishes immaculately with his head and both feet.  Just your typical flash in the pan.

Salah plays the same position as Messi.  What are you going to do?  I think it's awesome that the whole Egyptian Messi thing doesn't sound like a joke anymore.  I called Messi the Argentine Salah at Lucky Bar a few weekends ago and nobody got it.  Disappointing.

Crazy thing about Salah is I think he's missed a fair number of good chances this year.  His expected goals have to be near 20 or something.

Must have incredible timing, and he always seems to find the right positions to take as well. Maybe he doesn't have the best straight line speed, but speed of thought counts for a lot.

@Sinn Fein

Out of Eriksen, Son, Alli, Kane....

which do you feel has the best chance of starting both midweek games for Tott?

Planning on using the ol Triple captain chip in fantasy

Kane, Eriksen, Dele, Son in that order.

Obviously a little nervy because Kane is "sick", but I think he'll want to start on Tuesday to go for the 3 hat-tricks in a row, and then West Ham is a grudge match.

Spurs actually play 3 matches this week (Wimbledon on Saturday) , so there will be some rotation - which makes the others a bit riskier to start both league matches.

Just took the 2017 Liverpool quiz, despite the fact that I hate trivia and never pay attention to the stuff they use for Qs.  "Which Liverpool player scored three goals with his left foot in the month of April?"

My score was a grand total of 6.5/15, for which I received "No Silverware" and a picture of Brendan Rodgers in a WTF pose.

The one at thisisanfield?

Revs sign 17 year old Isaac Angking from their academy.   The Revs logged a whooping 0 minutes combined last year for any players under U21.  Hopefully Friedel is more willing to give some young blood a chance.

#thfc development squad midfielder, Samuel Shashoua could head out on loan to the @MLS shortly.

I wonder if Shashoua could be headed to New England - Friedel still maintains a good relationship with Spurs.

Don't they have a relationship with the Quakes?  That's how Simon Dawkins was there.

Last season Spurs had Anton Walkes in MLS at Atlanta, 2014, Grant Ward was on loan with Fire.

Dawkins actually arrived in San Jose via Derby County, not Spurs
