I don't subscribe, but follow the author (Will Parchman) on twitter. He had a couple interesting teaser tweets last week referencing Portland:For those of you who subscribe to the Athletic, there's a good story exploring and ranking the youth academies of each MLS club. For those of you who don't, Red Bulls had the #1 spot, while Minnesota was at the bottom.

I’ve had my head in every MLS academy for many, many hours of late for reasons that will become obvious soon enough. For now, I would like to say Portland. WTF.

Every bad academy makes complete sense. You’d guess most of them without knowing anything beyond their first team operation. But Portland... what... wh... how. How. Why.

[MARCA] La Liga match in the United States crumbles. The heads of the Spanish Government, the Spanish FA and FIFA met this morning in Madrid and agreed - for different reasons- in that today's intention is to NOT authorize the match, considered an outrage to the football system.
The possibility that Girona's LaLiga Santander match with Barcelona will take place in Miami is now looking less likely following a meeting between Spanish prime minister Pedro Sanchez, FIFA president Gianni Infantino and Spanish federation boss Luis Rubiales.
Following talks between the trio in Madrid, the feeling was that it is not the right moment to have the game with the Spanish government unhappy for the publicity it would give Catalan independence with the two teams coming from the region.
Generally the feeling was that it was not the time nor the correct way to go about bringing about the match.
For the Spanish federation they are unhappy at the way it would go against the interest of fan and harm the competiton as a whole, while FIFA feel that business is being put ahead of football.
there was a specific match that was proposed as the first game. I think it was Barca vs Espanyol."the" match?
Barça v. Gironathere was a specific match that was proposed as the first game. I think it was Barca vs Espanyol.
It is a funny occurrence when the RFEF's desire to screw over Catalan clubs conflicts with the government's desire to screw over Catalunya at large."the" match?
I thought they were proposing regular matches?
...just googled and found this-
NFL, take note.thank god.

Something like a Real Valladolid vs Eibar match would have gone forward already. That is similar to the ####ty type of games the NFL has put in London.NFL, take note.

Really? how can he be out of shape? Here's a bit more on it. He showed up 2 weeks late to pre season training as he felt he didn't need to be there with transfer discussions with Marseille going on (Seems typical though in soccer if discussing transfers and it was close the player doesn't train with their current club though), but he was also suspended the first 3 matches as well (I think for card accumulation as I never heard anything on the behavior front) so in typical Super Mario fashion he figured why start getting in shape when I'm already suspended 3 matches already?NewlyRetired said:Kind of amazing that Rooney turned out to be the better signing for DC United

Super Mario shows up out of shape and 2 weeks late to Preseason training. The excuse's are noteworthy
Sunderland AFC has given notice under its contract with Papy Djilobodji. Djilobodji, who was under contract to SAFC until June 2020, indicated in June 2018 that he wished to leave the club.
In order to facilitate that desire, the club entered into a written agreement with the player allowing him to spend the month of July on voluntary unpaid leave.
When that period came to an end, the player was expected either to leave for a new club – having reached a deal satisfactory to himself and SAFC - or to return in shape to play professional football. Instead, he returned to Sunderland over a month later, in the first week of September, ignoring written requests for his return. On his return, he was subjected to the same fitness test that his fellow professionals had undertaken on their return. He comprehensively failed that test.
As a result, Sunderland AFC can confirm that it has accepted Papy Djilobodji’s repudiatory breaches of contract and notice of the same has been provided to the player.
They seem a little different' Sounds like Papy had a clause in his contract he signed for this. Mario just simple said screw it I'm out the first 3 so why bother. Then the transfer talks came up and if I remember correctly were ready to be completed and it fell through last minutes . By no means defending the guy either. Just saying I can see why it happened here. It's like having a job and your boss let you take a leave to negotiate a contract with someone else (because he helped you and maybe put in a request for you) there was a deadline by your team you are on now and you return and it wasn't completely because your what was expected new employer pulled out last minute. You are now stuck in the middle of an issue you didn't want to be in nor did you see happening. Sounds like both parties in Mario's case are to be blamed.similar to Sunderland's admirable statement releasing Papy Djilobodji on Wednesday: https://www.safc.com/news/club-news/2018/september/club-statement-papy-djilobodji

Spurs struggling for fitness right now. Lloris drunk, Dele out, Kane stuck in first gear. Lucas supporting a fascist in Brazil. Son just got back in town after a month in Korea. Its going to be a tough slog for the next few weeks.
I wish. I'd gladly take a draw right now, and head to the CL matches mid-week.Your reverse jinxes can go to hell.
Congrats on the victory.
Trippier scores 2 on free kicks. I'm just hoping the rest of the season doesn't come crashing down and Liverpool falls into the relegation zone after the loss tomorrow.I wish. I'd gladly take a draw right now, and head to the CL matches mid-week.

I'm mostly serious about wanting THE Zlatan to coach the USMNT:ZLATAN FOR FIFA PRESIDENT
Forget the soccer aspect of this. I want it to happen just for the post-match interviews.I'm mostly serious about wanting THE Zlatan to coach the USMNT:
1. I think at this point in US soccer development, Zlatan perfectly describes the biggest gap between us and the rest of the world: pace. Not foot speed as much as speed of thought. I don't know if that can be taught, but if anyone can, my bet would be on the guy who at least knows what it is.
2. He is as 'American' in his background as anyone born in the U.S., which should make him instantly relatable; plus, his 'street cred' in the game commands respect from the players.
3. No hyperbole, he has succeeded everywhere he's gone, and great players moving into coaching jobs with little to no coaching experience has been done.
Where we are now--closing the gap with the rest of the world as far as infrastructure goes and more talent starting to come out of it--I think we have nowhere to go but up, so why not roll the dice a little? Look where we got with a 'credible' coach in Klinsmann; Zlatan could do no worse, and I think due to where he comes from and how he is, he would have a better chance of success than JK did.
